For me, this is the best performance of this lovely Respighi's tune, Il Tramonto. Respighi's composition is very rarely played, but this CD gives the best performance, and I suspect other recording studio stopped to record this fearing new performance never exceeds this one. This is the one of my best CD of early 1980's.
Please also note the very fine sound of the instruments, "Paganigi" set by Stradivari, which were loaned to Tokyo string quartet, and can't be compared with the instruments of Carmina.

This CD covers some rarely performed works. I bought it after a concert by the Swiss Carmina Quartett who performed the Quartetto Dorico. Their performance was definitely superior to the one recorded here, but you can live with this one quite well if you can put up with a quasi-orchestral sound. Complete your record collection with this work if you like such works as the string quartets by Gian Francesco Malipiero or Ildebrando Pizzetti. Until quite recently, this was the only CD available that had the Quartetto Dorico, which is quite surprising because this is an interesting, easy-to-understand and impressive work.
