This song is by far the best song on black star, a truly amazing album, and is my favorite mos def song, and that says a lot. This song speaks to me and should to anyone who lives in a city. It captures the heart and soul of city and makes it come alive thanks in large part to the imagery used. What makes this song so powerful is that it includes talib kwali and common. Talib is an amazing artist and his verse compliments talib's very well, I cant say which one is better bc both are so amazing. Also featured on this song is common which is like adding icing and a cherry to an already tasty cake. Hi-tek also does a great job with the beat. This song blows me away and anyone who does not have it I recomend you get it this second. You will fall in love with this song!

This single contains one of my favorite hip hop remixes of all time. The 'Respiration Flying High remix' prod. by Pete Rock feat. Black Thought?!?! WOW, amazing...I have had this CD single since it came out in '99. Do yourself a favor and pick this joint up...

I love both versions of this song, as both HiTek and Pete Rock bless the track in similar, yet distinct ways. Pete Rock utilizes a jazzy piano loop that rises and falls in beautiful synthesis, while HiTek chooses to illumine the track with an understated guitar lick, and rapid percussion. The lyrics are handled equisitely by a triumvirate team comprised of Mos Def, Talib and Common, and while each member lives up to his name, it is ultimately Common that leaves the lasting impression, due to his emotional take on reminiscing.

Fresh Air,
This review is from: Respiration (Audio CD)
"Respiration" is one of the smoothest songs to come along in hip hop in some time. The song has a liquid beat that MC's Mos Def, Taleb Kwali and guest Common glide over the top of. The song contains the line "breathe in, breathe out" and you can inhale this song as breath of fresh air in the hip hop world amid all the gansta poses of MC's like Jay-Z and others.

Mos Def one of the nearly dead breed of real MC. Lets you know what it is like to live in the city without talking about clockin dollars and women. And his fresh from the Nati Partner Kwali is keepin it real to. Big ups for the NATI and Brooklyn.
