Book Description

June 1, 1997 0815111983 978-0815111986
With an in-depth, clinical focus, this definitive new text teaches the basic anatomy of the pulmonary, cardiovascular, and renal systems. It also details the physiological principles underlying various therapeutic, diagnostic, and monitoring therapies and procedures -- all with depth and precision in each subject area. Each chapter includes: introduction, learning objectives, key terms, numerous tables and full-color drawings, "Clinical Focus" boxes, "Concept Questions" sprinkled throughout, chapter summary, and references.

* Focused clinical coverage -- the first to cover the subject with an in-depth and truly clinical focus. * Beautifully illustrated full-color text -- the only full-color respiratory care A&P text available! * Thorough coverage of the renal system and its role in maintaining acid-base balance and fluid volume as well as its effect on the health of the cardiopulmonary system. * Extensive cardiac section, including entire chapters on electrophysiology and ECG. * "Clinical Focus" boxes strategically placed within each chapter apply concepts from the classroom to clinical situations and challenge students to consider how their understanding of physiology will carry over to clinical practice. * "Concept Questions" throughout help students immediately evaluate their comprehension and retention of material. * Progressive learning objectives designed to challenge, provoke thought, and make learning interactive. * Key terms bolded throughout and defined at the back of the book, making learning and reviewing easier for the reader. * Student-friendly writing style presents challenging material in an engaging and understandable way.

Editorial Reviews

Review

This second edition is a must have. It is well written and the author goes to great lengths to present traditionally difficult material in easy to understand concepts. This book is highly recommended and would be a valued resource in any medical or college/university library.

Susan A Trombley, AAS, RRT, Doody Review Service

I found the author's writing style succinct and easy to read. I think this textbook should be useful adjunct for students in reparatory therapy programs that use problem-based learning, and for clinicians interested in learning more about the physiologic basis of respiratory care.

More About the Author

I got my start in the respiratory therapy profession as an on-the-job-trained "inhalation therapist" at what was then known as the New England Baptist Hospital in Boston, MA. I then moved closer to my roots in the Midwest to Indianapolis, IN where I obtained my respiratory therapy training and undergraduate degree from Indiana University. From the start I was very interested in the physiological basis for respiratory therapy. I believe therapists must have a deep understanding of cardiovascular and pulmonary physiology to function effectively as clinicians in today's world of evidence-based medicine.

I started my career in education by heading up a new program at Hesston College, Hesston KS in 1974. After obtaining my graduate degree in education from the University of Illinois in 1980, I taught at Wichita State University as director of its program until 1990. I was then recruited to Bismarck, ND to take over the respiratory therapy program cosponsored by St. Alexius Medical Center and the University of Mary; I worked with my faculty to convert that program to a baccalaureate entry level in 1991.

The first edition of my physiology textbook was published in 1997; the second edition was published in 2007 and a third edition is in the planning stages. The textbook is heavily oriented toward clinical practice; I believe students comprehend physiological concepts better when they are situated in a clinical practice context. I obtained my PhD in higher education from the University of North Dakota in 2004. Regarding some of my professional involvements, I served on the Committee on Accreditation for respiratory Care (CoARC) from 2001-2009 and was also a ND delegate to the American Association for Respiratory Care House of Delegates from 2001-2006; in 2009 I was inducted as a Fellow of the American Association for Respiratory Care (FAARC) at the AARC International Congress in Anaheim, CA.

I am married, have three sons, a daughter and two granddaughters. Our family vacations have involved mountain hiking, camping, downhill skiing, biking and visiting far-flung relatives. We are a very musical family; all of us sing, some in college, community and church choirs. Among my wife and sons we have some quite accomplished piano, guitar and percussion players.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource, March 29, 2000

This review is from: Respiratory Care Anatomy And Physiology: Foundations For Clinical Practice, 1e (Paperback)
This book is an excellent addition to your primary respiratory books or alone. This is the first book that I have found to have wonderful COLOR representations of the heart, lungs, and more. The inside of the book covers have all the most useful equations for quick reference. All of the information is in a clear concise format and each chapter has additional problems and clinical applications. I found this book to be FAR better than the text reccomended for my Respiratory Physiology class and I use it to suppliment my book on a daily basis.
