Book Description

August 13, 1992 038797895X 978-0387978956 1
This volume presents a summary of research conducted between 1986 and 1990 by the Western Conifers Research Cooperative on the effects of acid rain and associated pollutants on the forests of the Western United States. The book opens with background chapters on topics including physiography, climate, soil sensitivity to acid rain, and methods of air pollution assessment in forests. The second section of the book presents five regional studies of forest growth and condition in the coniferous forests of the American West. The book concludes with a chapter of summary, projections, and recommendations. The studies in The Response of Western Forests to Air Pollution provide some of the most detailed analyses to date of the impact of air pollution on plant growth, and include research conducted at scales ranging from small (open-tip chambers) to large (regional growth trends), and at biological levels of organization ranging from seedlings to stands. It will be of interest to ecologists, resource managers, foresters, and environmental policymakers.

This review is from: The Response of Western Forests to Air Pollution (Ecological Studies) (Hardcover)
This volume presents the most comprehensive summery to date of the effects of air pollution on coniferous forests of the western US. While highlighting research conducted between 1986 and 1990 by the Western Coniferous Research Cooperative, the authors also synthesize an extensive review of the literature on the effects of ozone, acid rain, and other pollutants on Western forests.

The book has background chapters on Western forest types, climate, patterns of air pollution, soil sensitivity to acid rain, and methods for assessing the impact of air polution on forests.

The second part describes five regional studies of forest growth and condition in the West. The book closes with a look at the future of Western forests including possible interactions between air pollution and stresses such as climate change, increased UV radiation, and forest management.

This book is of interest to ecologists, foresters, resource managers, and environmental policy makers.
