Actually felt like I had access to a doctor/counselor in my hand. Have fun through the journey, I am sure you two will be a great success.

Best self-help for basic life ever!,

This was an excellent read, the best self-improvement guide that I have ever come across. I learned more about quality mental health and ways to improve your life than I did spending 3 years with a psychiatrist. The basics is a man. Mike, who has a panic attack that leads him to explore the idea that perhaps he needs to change some of the ways that he has been thinking, reacting, and living his life. His doctor sends him to a Christian counselor and he also talks to his pastor. Along the way these people give him not only biblical foundations on how to live but also print-outs with questions and steps to follow. These print-outs are of course included in the the book. At the end of each chapter are some very thought provoking questions about how your own life mirrors what Mike has just experienced and asks you to think about how you have handled these trials in the past and what you could do differently in the future. Mike's story makes this book enjoyable to read preventing the reader from feeling like it is a textbook. The wording used is common everyday text helping with the flow of the story and taking away any feelings of being overwhelmed with information. Definitely a keeper for the library to be read over and over.

This book is incredible. Written primarily for men (I think, since the main character is a man), this book uses the popular leadership fable style and talks about being healthy from your brain-out.
Did you know that your body health is really a by-product of good brain health? If you are carrying around extra brain baggage, then you are also going to have extra bad-health baggage. This book is a fable about a guy named Mike who learns a lot about living in his own skin at home and at work - and thereby improves his overall health. Would you love to lower your cholesterol, blood pressure and lose weight? The keys can be found in the Rest of Health. The seven vital strategies to optimize your well being are: 1.looking to learn 2.transforming your thinking 3.establishing healthy boundaries 4.caring for your body 5.raising your emotional IQ (one of the chapters in this section is called `the taming of the shrewd') 6.cultivating your spiritual life 7.fine tuning relationships I highly recommend this book. Seriously - just the appendices are worth the price of the book. It is a fun read, and it doesn't dumb down any of the issues at hand.

Clever Delivery and Helpful Steps to Follow,
This review is from: The Rest of Health: Learn the 7 Vital Strategies to Optimize your Wellbeing (Paperback)
Part story, part self-help, part therapy, The Rest of Health, is a complete prescription for rethinking your life.
Written by a married couple, a medical doctor and a licensed therapist, the book is a compilation of their experience, wisdom and faith. The fictional account of a marriage made up of individuals with issues that collide teaches coping techniques and stress killing better choices. The integrated recipe or prescription would be enough to help the average struggler to get beyond some of the pitfalls that make for an unfulfilled life. Though those with serious issues probably won't find enough help within the pages to fix major life trauma this book can offer the answers to questions that unhappy folks may not even know to ask. The fiction gets a bit preachy at times, and the point of view is omniscient, so as fiction goes the story is not compelling escapism. But the idea to put dry facts within a story to get points and examples across to an audience is a great idea. This book would be a great small group study. |
