4.0 out of 5 stars Musical craftsmen - not just musicians., November 12, 1999
I saw these guys at a New Years party 1998 in DC. They blew me away. I bought their album on the spot and expected the cd to recapture the spirit, if not the music of the performance. And while it did to an extent - I was a bit dissapointed that the CD cut short too many songs they had played longer and to glorious heights while live. This band is exceptional, even if the layout of the album is a bit frustrating in its brevity. But don't get me wrong, they're not a "jam" band in the sense of Phish or the Dead; they don't confuse improvisation with musical masterbation. Their style is a healthy mix of Jazz, hip-hop, and, at times, a Cure "Disintigration"-era type introspectivness (that some will no doubt confuse with gloomy) that works well and sounds fresh. If you can't see them live, then get the album. Hopefully their future releases will capitalize upon their creative strengths better than this one did. That is not do say that their talents aren't revealed in this CD - they are. It's just that if you hear them live and then listen to this album you can't help but notice they "held back" a bit when they recorded it. But I'm nit-picking. They all are masters of their respective instruments - and the music they create is as innovative as it is perfectly blended. To give an example, when you hear their jazzy drum 'n bass tracks (4 is a good example) keep in mind that's their DRUMMER playing those licks, not a machine. Outstanding stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jazzy-borne, drum-n-bass visiting uberoriginal rockers, November 10, 2002
By
Ellis Godard (Moorpark, CA United States) - See all my reviews
Lake Trout started as a swoony jazzy thing that reminded me of Sting's _Dream of the Blue Turtles_. Then, a few years ahead of their time, the delved into a drum-n-bass thing that's in evidence in heaps on this release, Volume for the Rest of It. It isn't conventional drum n bass, in that it's all live (the drummer is SICK!), but also in that it rocks and rolls harder and farther than most. Excellent stuff!

The band is of course off in another direction. More recently, they're more directly rock, losing the jazzy and electronic edges for something a bit more heavy and fast. Volume for the Rest of It is a great taste of them before that transition.

Been going to see these guys for years now. They keep getting better and better. If you like good beats, phenomenal percussion, and killer songs, pick up this cd. You will love it. For fans of MMW, hip-hop, jazz, phish, rock, alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very, Very Good, November 21, 2000
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Jazz, Drum & Bass, Jam Rock, R&B, POP fusion with talent. One of the best bands I have been fortunate enough to see live.

2 Sounds from Below ... very chill

4-5 Little Things/In Different Places ... loopy guitar with some of the best percussion I've yet to witness. Think very tripped out Jungle.

10 I'll Be ... a Jam Bandish tune thats too catchy for its own good.

Those songs are the most memorably but this band is the total package. Their live album in my opinion is better but this is still deffinitly worth picking up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best This Summer, September 13, 2005
Late Trout combines the sound of jazz with a rock spin. It may be one of the best CD's I have herd this summer. With their smooth jazz, jamband image they will please audiences of all ages. Parents, this is a CD, with no foul langueage you can listen to with your kids. I rate this a five, and I can not wait for their next CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars sounds good !, August 11, 2005

Pretty good CD. I'm cetainly not a music critic so bear with me.
I have an eclectic taste in music and if you are looking for something very interesting, this is a good CD to buy.
It seems like a fusion of jazz, funk, hiphop. The price is right so if you are at all interested, I would say "do it".
I'm from Baltimore so I was also interested in hearing what a local band had to offer. I was very pleased and would like to see them play next time they are in town.

4.0 out of 5 stars another good album by LT, February 16, 2004
Not as concisely put together as their latest release, Another One Lost (which seems geared more towards the mainstream and has more lyrical songs), but still up there. The best song is easily "Sounds From Below." One more thing it has that AOL lacks: saxophone and longer songs. I also recommend their hard-to-find live album, Alone At Last, though w/the exception of a few songs, it's an experimental version of AOL in-the-making (song "#2" alone makes it worth buying, however). Their first, self-titled album is also good and has more of a jazzy feel to it than their successive albums.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lake Trout Can do No Wrong, October 10, 1999
By A Customer
Very simply this band is awesome. Anything they produce is going to blow away the mind numbing stuff being pumped out of your radio these days. This album is incredible. Buy it. You will not be sorry. And when they hit the big time, which is inevitable, you can be one of those that says "I have been listening to them since way back." Do it. Buy it now.

5.0 out of 5 stars why do they rock so hard?, November 26, 1999
By A Customer
This cd has been in my stereo for the past 4 months straight, ever since I first saw them open for Soul Coughing in DC. Just the day before that show I was describing the perfect type of band that I was going to form, and then I saw these guys and they are it. They've got the groove goin on I tell you.
