Rest in P, underrated musician...,
By Philip Eldring "Flow de Cologne" (Köln, Germany) - See all my reviews

Eddie Hazel is truly one of Funk's / Rock's unrecognized musicians. Everyone who knows Funkadelic's "Maggot Brain" is amazed by Hazel's guitar playing. On this CD you can hear studio outtakes that should have been Hazel's solo joint. The material on the disc is worth many listens. People who enjoy the Clinton Clan in all it's facetts should buy this CD. It's worth the money anyway. So go ahead !

this is bad about time some unreleased material from the late eddie hazel came out, if you can't get enough of maggot brain get this, if you love the first 3 funkadelic albums, plus parliament's first thangs cd get this, you will find some pretty interesting songs on here, like beyond word and measure, not hard rock but the bassline thumps a weird track with the brides singing backup sounds like a taste of honey on a acid trip-i'm serious, then juicy fingers has a long solo by eddie, as does relic delic this was hazel at his best, the man [is great], letting all us know he is the king of funk-rock add billy bass, and tiki fulwood in the mix and you have the only brothers who could even compete with the band of gypies, the standout cut to me is we 3 eddie's voice moves you it's so emotional you'll find it disturbing then eddie goes to a beautiful solo this sounds like the sequel to maggot brain cause this was his best solo since to me, the whole cd rules, mr. hazel is truly underrated someone release rest in p 2,and include love is something, clone communicado,p is the funk, i angle, orbitron attack, and pray my soul..., no p-funk fanatic is funked up without this cd, whoever said funk was dead should do their research plenty of new funk, and old funk that still sounds fresh for generations of hip hoppersd to explore.

p funk fans will love this. someone e-mail george we want more maggot brain, more maggot brain, and then some. funkadelic wrote the book on how rock should be played. features billy bass, tiki fulwood, and bernie worrell which is all the better, please buy this, for all funkateers who love maggot brain-and early funkadelic, and love first thangs from parliament. eddie hazel was the greatest guitarist of all time, i felt his pain in all his work with the mob. all i can say is buy the cd for yourself, then start protesting about more unreleased p-funk.

"Rest in P" is an essential collection of unreleased solo material recorded by the pioneering lead guitarist of Parliament/Funkadelic. The CD contains some songs from a previously issued CD titled "Jams from the Heart". However, you would not be disappointed to have both. Actually, "Rest in P" has complete versions of the songs "Unkut Funk" and "Smedly Smorganoff" from the "Jams from the Heart" and much more from George Clinton's vaults. "Rest in P" also has more songs which give it more of an album feel. The song "We Three" is the same song as "From the bottom of my heart" from the "Jams.." CD. However, George Clinton adds some Keyboards from Bernie Worrell on this production which gives it a different feel. This song is the jewel of the CD and is worth the purchase of the CD alone. Eddie showcases his strong, soulful vocals with his incomparable lead guitar virtuosity. Eddie "puts it down" on this one. "No, It's not" is a strong track that is like an instrumental version of Funkadelic's "Comin round the Mountain". "We are One" and "Juicy Fingers" and also strong cuts. The songs were likely recorded during his sessions for his solo album "Games, Dames and Guitar Thangs. The songs have the same feel and the same musicians such as Bernie Worrell, Billy "Bass" Nelson, Jerome Brailey, Tiki Fulwood and Bootsy Collins on Space Bass. This CD is essential for anyone into "P-Funk" and anyone who loves good guitar playing. Eddie "Maggot Brain" Hazel is in a class by himself.

Eddie is God,

Unfortunately Rest in P is not Eddie Hazel's finest work. Many of the selections are reworked songs found on Jams from the Heart. Overdubs by Buddy Miles and P-funk alumni were added after Eddie's death and they sound a bit awkward. The import does have its moments, though. The song Relic Delic is a must have for true Eddie disciples.

Prepare to be P-dazzled,

From the first glittering phrase, Eddie did for me exactly 6 years after his premature and much mourned demise what he did as I stood in Greensboro Coliseum on the P-Funk tour of 1979. What an artist. What a talent. What an awesome album. He was, and still is, to this guitarists mind, the epitome of what a guitar can do in a rock/funk/nearly jazz environment. I haven't a clue when the tracks on this seminal CD were recorded, but he sails the whole way through. Fans of Prince, Hendrix, Satriani and Vai will adore this heady mix of Clinton production spiced by Eddie's high drama playing, with the original, one and only feel of funk. He is on the one through every track. Sinuous, sexy, and occassionaly amost out of control, this CD is a MUST for any guitar fan looking for something special. Bootsy on bass, and a whole horde of P-funk players make this album simply unmissable. Stuff the import cost. Good on you Japan for recognising a true GIANT of the rhythm/funk guitar idiom. Nile Rogers would learn from this. TAFKP would learn from this. I have learned from this. It completes the journey. It is a journey. I am in the prescence of genius. Eddie. It's your anniversary. Rest in P. You have left your mark. I truly miss you. Brian T. 23/12/98

If you don't like Eddie Hazel, you don't like guitar playing! The man was a genius only challenged by the late great Jimi for the crown of all time greatest guitarist. This CD, whilst consisting of unfinished studio out takes, clearly demonstrates Eddie's virtuosity.

Eddie's playing flows like water over smooth odd sized ROCKS in an eternal stream of the FUNK. Put it this way:put this on in the car leaving san francisco and you'll be in detroit before you know it! I can't think of another guitarist that has such a direct flow. All day long, baby, all day long: rock, rock, rock ,rock ,rock.
