More About the Author

How It All Started...

In 2004, Ross was living in a new city -- Philadelphia -- and found that avoiding social opportunities with food was not an effective way to make friends. And he was overwhelmed by how challenging it was to find restaurants to take his fiancée (now wife) where he could actually order something gluten-free.

Then his wife had a brilliant idea: "Let's make dining cards to teach restaurants how to prepare gluten free foods!"

Together, the couple visited kitchen restaurants, interviewed chefs, read product labels, and studied dozens of cookbooks. They built lists of foods they could both eat, foods to avoid, and the likely pitfalls they might encounter at restaurants. Eventually, they turned these lists into thorough and foolproof instructions, and enlisted translators - three translators per card, actually - to ready them for ethnic restaurants.

The first time they used the dining cards, Ross was the guinea pig, so you can imagine how glad he was when they actually worked.

He used them in dozens of restaurants across Philadelphia, enjoying corn tortillas at a Mexican greasy spoon -- where nobody spoke English -- and even eating Indian food -- now one of his favorite cuisines -- for the very first time.

Triumph's first customers found success with the cards, too. In fact, most of the sales came from word-of-mouth referrals. The response was incredible!

Triumph Dining today

We've grown a lot since those early days. Thanks to your great suggestions, we've added several new products, including a Restaurant Guide and a Grocery Guide -- both of which are updated annually. And today, we're the largest independent gluten free publisher in North America.

Triumph remains a family-owned and operated company, with expanded offices in scenic Falls Church, VA -- just a few miles from Washington, DC. There are four of us now: Ross, Kay, Laura, and Yana. We're always hard at work updating our current products and developing new ones, so if there's ever a restaurant or product you'd like to share with our readers, tell us about it and we'll consider it for the guide.

I have used these at several different places and they are easy to read and understand! They are also plastic or laminated-like, and are great to send back to the kitchen for the chef. I am very happy with these dining cards!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must for Celiacs Who Want to Eat Out!, November 17, 2009

I was recently diagnosed with celiac disease, and it has been a life changer! I used to enjoy going out to new restaurants, experimenting with different cuisines; but that came to a sudden halt. Now with these cards I can share with the wait staff and the chef my own food needs to see if they can accomodate me. I have had wonderful feed back from chefs, one in particular coming to my table and thanking me for sharing the card with him. He felt I made his job much easier!

5.0 out of 5 stars These cards are a Godsend!, November 12, 2008
This review is from: Triumph Dining Gluten Free Restaurant Dining Cards (Gold Pack, Cards for American, Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Mexican, Thai, Vietnamese, Greek, Italian and Greek Cuisines) (Cards)
These cards are a godsend! I am so tired of trying to communicate to a rushed, unlistening waiter what my dietary restrictions are. I am never comfortable that these instructions were understood or communicated to the chef. I've been "glutened" many times when I was assured a dish was gluten free. I just hand the handy, laminated card to the waiter, and know that the odds the chef will get the critical information he needs to prepare my food is higher by several orders of magnitude. These cards exist for 9 types of cuisine (Mexican, Thai, Japanese, Indian, Chinese, American, Vietnamese, Greek, and Italian) and each card is written in English and the native language. I can finally go back to all my favorite ethnic places. Moreover, the chef gets lots of information I wouldn't have known or been able to communicate - for example that fish sauce (a common Thai ingredient) often contains gluten. There are specific ingredients called out for all the cuisines covered.

My husband is so excited that his favorite Mexican restaurant is finally back in our rotation! This is unique product and a godsend for anyone trying to avoid gluten.
