5.0 out of 5 stars An astounding debut thriller
I just finished Lee Vance's debut thriller "Restitution" and feel almost breathless. I picked it up on a whim last night and read it straight through in a matter of hours.

5.0 out of 5 stars An astounding debut thriller, December 19, 2007
This review is from: Restitution (Hardcover)
I just finished Lee Vance's debut thriller "Restitution" and feel almost breathless. I picked it up on a whim last night and read it straight through in a matter of hours.

It has everything a thriller should have. Tension. Suspense. The ordinary man forced by events to be a hero. Classic stuff.

This is not to say that "Restitution" is flawless. There are, in fact, many flaws, but as with Clive Cussler and certain others, the writing and story are powerful enough to lift you over the major potholes in the plot.

Lee Vance is just plain good and I look forward to his future work.

Time and time again, I was awestruck by how Vance played the Everyman theme, the Kafkaesque situation of a man in thrall to forces greater than himself. Vance plays it like a violin. For the first half of the novel, Peter Tyler is the victim of circumstances. A Wall St. player with lots of money, doing big deals, flying all over the world, Tyler is brought up short when he learns his wife his dead, a murder victim.

A really nasty cop makes it clear that Tyler is the prime suspect.

Crushed at first not only by the death of his wife, but by the rejection of inlaws, employer, co-workers, the media, all of whom think him guilty, Tyler begins to fight back.

He reaches out to an old friend, Andrei Zhilina, whom he learns has disappeared. His twin sister, Katya, also an old friend is distant for a variety of reasons Both Katya and Andrei are employed by William Turdale, a real master of the universe type, Wall St. wheeler and dealer, billionaire and a really nasty guy.

Peter is under increasing pressure from the police to confess. Katya asks him to go to Moscow to find Andrei.

It would be unfair for me to reveal more of the plot except to say it's a doozy. Yes, there are potholes along the way, but Lee Vance definitely has a style to whiz you right over them.

The characters are near masterpieces. Not in the Shakespearean tradition, but in the manner of thrillers. Peter Tyler, as noted is the ordinary self-absorbed guy thrust into a situation where he has to do extraordinary things not only to avenge his dead wife, but simply to survive. William Turdale needs only the greased mustache and tophat: he's exactly the kind of guy portrayed in the early "Perils Of Pauline" silent movies, tying the damsel to the tracks in the path of the oncoming train. Robert "Tigger" Meyer is the stalwart friend who is always there. And the mother of the twins is a mystery till the last. Lots of other sharply drawn characters also populate the pages.

There are evil corporations involved on end of the scale and the private dreams, aspirations an loves of two people on the other.

It's a fast read and a worthwhile one. With this first effort, Lee Vance is definitely off to a great a start. I can hardly wait for his next effort.

Jerry

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 Big stars for this superb new mystery writer, August 2, 2007
By
This review is from: Restitution (Hardcover)
Peter Tyler has a high-powered Wall Street career. He's ambitious. A real guy's guy. Married to his college sweetheart. His life looks solid. Ordered. Easy.

On the surface.

But there are cracks--weak places in his character and his history. As his marriage struggles, he finds himself increasingly attracted to the sister of his best friend, Andrei. A one-night stand with her leaves him conflicted, but before he can sort it out, his wife is murdered in their home and he's suspect number one. When it's discovered that a package sent by Andrei is the only thing missing from the murder scene, Peter believes Andrei is the key.

Only Andrei is missing.

In order to prove his innocence and find his wife's killer, Peter goes underground. Bitter cops, greed, vengeance, ruthless pillars of society, and the Russian mob all conspire to put obstacles in Peter's way as he fights to save his own life and find the truth.

First novel? Yes. An amazing first novel. The pace is relentless, the plot serpentine, and the writing tight. Vance hints at the rewrites and efforts he made to bring a winner to the market. They paid off. Restitution is fabulous, and one of my top reads for 2007.

Armchair Interviews says: Highly recommended first novel. Hope he is writing the next one right now!

Lee Vance's debut novel, Restitution, takes part in the worlds of high finance and fine art as it follows one man determined to avenge the death of his wife. The plot starts off strong, however, as it unfolds it becomes contrived and convoluted in an effort to maintain its level of suspense. Further, I found the characters to not be developed well enough to enable me to care much about what happens to them. In fairness, Restitution, is a fast read and is definitely good enough to make you want to find out how it ends. However, due to the limitations described, it is not a book that I'd recommend you rush out to read. Restitution shows Vance's potential as a creator of fast-paced thrillers but it is not a book that deserves to be placed near the top of your to-be-read list.

It is hard to believe this is a first novel by the author. It has everything that a well written mystery/thriller should have. Interesting characters, tightly written dialogue, a seamless plot with interesting and plausable twists and turns and the ability to keep you glued to it from beginning to end. It just doesn't get much better than this and that is all you need to know. Give yourself a present and "discover" this very talented new author.

Just read this book on flight from New York to London and could not put it down. Arrived in London completely tired and frazzled and did not want to get off the plane because I still had pages left. Unbelievable thriller from guy who knows financial world inside-out. Read, learn, enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is an Impressive Debut, October 6, 2007
This review is from: Restitution (Hardcover)
I read a lot of debut thrillers, and most of them are pretty disappointing. But I thought Lee Vance's RESTITUTION was a very good first effort.

The plot of RESTITUTION is straightforward: an investment banker's wife is found dead, and he instantly becomes the main suspect. As a result, the banker has to investigate the murder on his own, and he eventually uncovers a remarkably complicated reason for it involving his best friend.

This novel reminds me quite a bit of Harlan Coben's work. Like Coben, Vance constructs a very intricate plot with a lot of twists and turns. This novel is very well written for a first effort, and Vance always keeps things moving. There are a lot of flashbacks in RESTITUTION, but they don't hinder the momentum of the story for the most part. In the end, I found this to be a very exciting read.

The major downside of RESTITUTION is that Vance's plot is too complicated for its own good. I'm usually pretty good at following plotlines, but Vance's story is so convoluted, and involves so many different elements, that I began to lose interest toward the end. Unfortunately, you almost need a diagram to keep track of all the plot points. My advice to Vance is to make his future storylines more simple and streamlined.

Overall, however, RESTITUTION is a solid read and I hope Lee Vance will be writing many more books in this genre. He has lots of writing talent.

Take a weekend and read Lee Vance's first novel. It's great fun. You'll enjoy the ride.

Peter Tyler is a Wall Street Master of the Universe, but the wheels fall off his bus in the first few pages. How will he deal with his very real nightmare?

While weaving a credible murder mystery, Mr. Vance develops and explores some great characters and classic relationship issues involving mothers and sons, fathers and sons, mothers-in-law, fathers-in-law, husbands and wives, business partners and trusted friends and their attractive sisters. The Wall Street repartee between Tyler and Tigger is good stuff, and their deep friendship is real. As the murder mystery thickens, twists and escalates, Mr. Vance also reminds us of the power parents have over their children and the mysteries (and vagaries) of love between husbands and wives, parents and children, brothers and sisters, and best friends.

The twists and turns are fun, and the hints, feints, and surprises work well. The side stories and back stories are great too. Just when you think you know what's up, Mr. Vance introduces new twists and characters and ups the ante - his timing is great. Who's the good guy? Who's the bad guy? Can you be both? Read Restitution this weekend and find out! This is a great Wall Street, high stakes "who-done-it" that you can't put down.

5.0 out of 5 stars hell, yeah!, November 12, 2008

Twisted, unexpected. I read mostly non-fiction economics. Vance rocked. His characters are evil and realistic and as multi-faceted as you would expect in a world of high finance. Lots of plot turns. Encore! As an alumni, I especially appreciated he didn't trash GSCO.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Thriller, August 17, 2008

Picked this up on a whim and was blown away by great characters, great plot and incredible movement. Literally read it all the way through in one night - couldn't put the book down. Strongly recommend it for anyone tired of thinly plotted, barely believable thrillers. This is a great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Debut, April 30, 2008
This review is from: Restitution (Hardcover)
I found this an impressive debut. Tightly woven, believable characters and a totally unexpected ending. Despite some of the reviews, I found it pretty fast paced. I liked Peter Tyler the main character, who had made any number of mistakes, but was dilligent in his efforts to make things "right". I worked in Investment banking in the past and I found the descriptions of the work environment fairly accurate, but not without a few holes. I read for entertainment and I don't spend a lot of time analyzing. I couldn't wait to get out of my car to finish it after a long day at work, so I sat in my garage and read the last few pages. I would definitely recommend...
