Not as good as some previous books she wrote--in fact awful,
By
This review is from: A Restless Knight (The Dragons of Challon, Book 1) (Paperback)
I won't repeat the plot synopsis since many have already done so and I'll keep this short. Deborah MacGillivray has written some good books, but this is not one of them. I agree totally with the reviewer who mentioned this was like a poor copy of Elizabeth Lowell's Untamed. Don't waste your money.

SCIMMABLE READ,
By Diane V (Illinois) - See all my reviews

NOT SOMETHING I'D GO OUT OF MY WAY TO GET.
SEEMED LIKE IT COULD HAVE BEEN MORE TIGHTLY WRITTEN, AND I FOUND MYSELF SKIMMING THE BOOK ABOUT MIDWAY THROUGH (I MADE THE JOKE TO MYSELF THAT NOT ONLY WAS IT "A RESTLESS KNIGHT" BUT "A RESTLESS READER.)

Not one i'll be going back to,
By Nichole (Utah) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Restless Knight (The Dragons of Challon, Book 1) (Paperback)
Personally i thought this book was awful and overused. I even tried to read another of the authors books, hoping that this was just a miss, but they all seem to be the same- not terribly creative, some seriously overused plots, awful dialogue, and nothing new or interesting. Personally in this book i hated Julien- hated his attitude, hated the way he treated everyone- if i wanted to read a 'true to life' book about how men treated women, i'd have went to the nonfiction section.
And, just as a side note, isnt it weird that all the people that give this book great reviews are in this authors book club, and thanked in her book for their support. And, also, how a lot of negative reviews seem to be disappearing? Either someone is a little to staunch a supporter, or the authors book club is being a little nefarious.

Unreadable,
By Amnia (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Restless Knight (The Dragons of Challon, Book 1) (Paperback)
I thought the plot was thin and the characters one-dimensional. Reading this book was boring - it had no "holding" power. The only thing good about this book is when you are finished with it.

I really tried...,
By Katherine "Katherine" (milwaukee, WI) - See all my reviews

I tried. I really really tried to read this book. I forced myself to read more than half of it, but then I had to give up. The plot was boring and I felt like I have read it a billion other times in a billion other boring books. The dialogue was awful, the characters were flat.

Yuck!,
This review is from: A Restless Knight (The Dragons of Challon, Book 1) (Paperback)
I admit it--I read only a few sample pages...and it was a struggle to read that much. What amazingly cliched and cloying prose! Whew! Hard to believe this wasn't issued by a vanity press.

Fell Asleep,
This review is from: A Restless Knight (The Dragons of Challon, Book 1) (Paperback)
The book was just so, so. I found myself falling asleep, wanted it to move forward. I can't help but feel I read this plot, maybe in another book?
Not worth the buy.

Lone dissenter here, but wasn't that impressed.,
This review is from: A Restless Knight (The Dragons of Challon, Book 1) (Paperback)
This book certainly wasn't terrible or a waste of time to read but after all the 5 star reviews I guess I was expecting something better. The characters were basically likable, their romance worked well, I liked the medieval setting, but I didn't find the paranormal elements all that well integrated and I think this book would have worked better as a straight historical romance because the historical background was I think the best part of the story. This book was a pleasant enough read but not really a must-read.

Reviewing this book AGAIN. I reviewed it long ago, but of course that was deleted...,

I actually didn't hate this book, but I was rolling my eyes quite a bit while reading it. I was definitely bored. [...]
I love Scottish romance. I also love stories of the Fae. [...] Everything was "tradition" and "because the Auld Ones willed it". Every time the hero tried to ask questions, the heroine "smiled with tears in her eyes..." and explained that it was all destiny. There was no point where the reader was allowed to enjoy suspense or action among actual living people. Rather, we got to be drowned in lessons of the heroine's clan traditions. Basically, the entire story boiled down to the heroine and all of the other clan women planning a night of sex for the main couple under a specific apple tree. The marriage ceremony was based upon the main couple also having sex on ground in front of the whole clan. Forget romance, it didn't matter if they were compatible. As long as they had sex in front of the clan people and spirits, everyone would live HEA.

Not bad, but not a must-read.,

atlantis_girl is no longer the only dissenter here. I agree with her that the paranormal hints just don't work in the story. The author must refer to Tamlyn as "witchy" a hundred times. There are paranormal hints there, but it never comes to a true head, so the references are just distracting. The power of Scotland can be used with being overused (or misused).
I think the thing that bothered me most was the way Julian treats Tamlyn. I understand that "in those days" a man WAS the only power, and a woman was just a piece of property. However, that's not what I want in a romance novel. Julian is pigheaded and arrogant, just rude. It taints even the sexy parts. I'm new-ish to the romance genre. This is not an author I'll be reading more from. I'm just too worried all her male leads are like this. |
