For the first time on one 2CD set are all of the A and B sides of his Specialty label singles plus all the A and B sides of the singles recorded for his own KRC label, completed by all the singles sides recorded for ABC up to 1959. Offering up a substantial and enticing 57-tracks, this 2CD set covers almost all of the 45" single output for the American Rhythm'n'Blues singer Lloyd Price on the Specialty, KRC and ABC-Paramount labels in the USA between 1952 and 1960 (despite the title saying 1959).

Like all of the other Jasmine 2CD sets in this on-going 'Singles' series, the compilation and annotation have been put together by BOB FISHER (small but very informative liner notes on a three-way fold-out inlay) with the CD Mastering done by TALL ORDER of the UK (Amazon's credit that these are 'original recordings remastered' is NOT born out by anything either on the CD or its packaging).

Hailing from Louisiana (born in 1933), as you can see from the chart details provided above, Price had an extraordinary Rhythm'n'Blues and Pop crossover career with many large-selling Number One singles. He even introduced the explosive Little Richard to Art Rupe's Specialty Records (only to be outshone by him). He also had ties with soulster legends Howard Tate and Wilson Pickett and the early recordings of Reggae Giant Bob Marley. Price even became one of the first R'n'B artists to own his own label - KRC Records - he was an astute businessman.

I wish I could say that the sound quality on these recordings is worth writing home about - it isn't - it's good rather than being great - and tracks on Disc 2 in particular sound muddy and distant. To put this into context - there's a BEAR FAMILY 34-track CD called "Rocks" from 2008 - which has the song "Hello Little Girl" on it (1st legitimate reissue of his material, stunning 52-page booklet). Bear's version is from the real tapes and sounds fantastic - the version here is muffled and lifeless. The re-recording Stereo cut of "Mailman Blues" (lyrics above) fares better and is excellent, but much of Disc 1 is afflicted with the same dullard sound as Disc 2. Also the material dips in quality big time by the time you get to the early Sixties recordings which feature awful girly backing vocals drowning out any passion or rocking vibe...

So - lots of tracks for sure (gaps filled in) and its cheaper, but the audio and inlay are only OK at best. I've bought and loved Jasmine's "Five Keys" and "Flamingos" sets, but this is very disappointing. I'd say that even though it costs more - Bear Family's "Rocks" is a far better buy - both presentation and soundwise.

Hey, Lloyd Price fans, what can I say! Do you believe this is 2010? I say that again, do you believe this is 2010? The reason I say this is because that's how long it's taken someone to issue a complete 2-cd collection of Lloyd Price. I guess nobody cares anymore. This is an all encompassing collection that collects his best sides between 1952 and 1960. It includes his primo sides with Specialty and ABC Records. I've been waiting this long just to get my hands on a complete collection like this, it's really one of the last cd sets I've been waiting for. There's been other sets that have been released, but most of them are just missing too many songs. This set covers pretty much everything you would want, if you're a fan of his. And the last and most important thing is the sound quality on this set is excellent. Those of you familiar with the Jasmine Label know the pros and cons that they've been accused of, but don't be worried the sound quality on this set is superb. Last, but not least, these tracks are all in mono.
