Editorial Reviews

Review

"In death as he was in life, John Senior is ever the 'teacher of souls.' In The Restoration of Christian Culture, he has left us a treasury of truth."  —Robert K. Carlson, PhD, academic dean, Wyoming Catholic College

"I once referred to my teacher, Mr. Senior, as 'the Socrates of Kansas.' I would say now that he was the Catholic Socrates of the 20th century."  —James S. Taylor, PhD, author, Poetic Knowledge: The Recovery of Education

"Direct, wise, and rooted deeply in the classics of the Western tradition, Senior offered a Christian humanist critique of the modern world without the slightest measure of trepidation."  —Bradley J. Birzer, PhD, Russell Amos Kirk Chair of History, Hillsdale College, and author, Sanctifying the World and J.R.R. Tolkien's Sanctifying Myth

"The republication and editing of these volumes will solidify, and I do not say this lightly, Dr. Senior will take his proper place in history as a true prophet."  —Reverend C.J. McCloskey III, research fellow, Faith and Reason Institute, Washington, DC

"Anyone interested in the future of our troubled society has to consider the truth of Senior's central ideas."  —Robert F. Gotcher, PhD, full professor of philosophy, St. John's University

"Next to Senior, every other combatant in the present culture war for the soul of the West pales like a Lilliputian."  —Peter A. Redpath, PhD, professor of philosophy, St. John's University

"A timeless and timely prescription for regaining our sanity, both individually and as a civilization."  —James Bemis, Latin Mass Magazine

"A thought-provoking proposal for a way out of today's cultural crisis."  —Andrew V. Abela, Ph.D., professor, department of business and economics, The Catholic University of America

...everything you need to know about restoring integrity and substance to bland, decadent post modern existence. John Senior's two books "The Death of..." and "The Resurrection of Christian Culture" might be summed up as "Peter Kreeft on steroids." By which I take nothing from the good Dr. Kreeft, but with Senior you get the medicine with very little sugar to help it down. Fierce, unapologetic Catholic thought, written in a style that feels very much like it might have come from the 1890 - 1930 period, but it was in fact written in the 60's and 70's, and is very current and cogent. Hard to find but very worth it, highly recommended, essential reading for those who think that there is something missing in modern culture. If you like Chesterton, get this while you can find a copy. Get two copies, and give one to a very good friend.

A practical blueprint for reforming one's life, family, and culture. A sample of Senior's wisdom:
"First, negatively, smash the television set. The Catholic Church is not opposed to violence; only to unjust violence; so smash the television set. And, positively, put the time and money you now spend on such entertainment into a piano so that music is restored to your home, common, ordinary Christian music, much of which is very simple to play."

I want to write something to justify my rating of 5 stars here but words fail me. Providing a critique does this book an injustice because this is something one must read and sit with in order to know it. But let me start by saying this is a beautifully written book. It is a book of deep wisdom put before us by a man who has read in a broad spectrum and who knows intimately our loss of true culture and true vision. It is as much a book of poetry as prose in that what it states needs to be seen thru the soul and the intuition as much as by the rational mind.

There is an older generation, now passing, which will be the last one with any remnant of a collective memory that once things were better, if only marginally. For those of you in this generation you will read this book and feel a longing for a better time. To those who are younger and do not recall that there are options, perhaps this book will inspire you to recapture the culture that has been left behind. Perhaps you will be inspired to read it in order to know the direction in which you must head if life on this earth is to become better. Perhaps you will read in order to become truthfully educated and because you will know what love of learning truly means. Perhaps you will read to see that looking back can be the precursor to looking forward.

We are living in a Dark Night. The times are getting worse rather than better despite the ranting of the popular media and the progressive ideologues. Whole cultures are disappearing under an ideology that is determined to erase from this world that which is good and right. You may not think so and you will point towards technologies and the advancement o human rights to justify your case.

What we are witnessing in our society is the result of a mass exodus from Western thought, and thus from Christianity. The effects are disastrous, and so damage the imagination that John Senior stated he does not even support a revival of Thomistic thought for that very reason. The intellect needs the imagination to operate properly, thus an injured imagination will injure our ability to reason. Thomism, and reason itself, not only becomes distasteful to modern man, but inedible.

The author makes bold claims, which at first glance will make our modern eyes wince. Don't put it down. Think about what he is saying and why, only then will you be able to appreciate this little book. What the author accomplishes within these pages is the re-presentation of a perspective long forgotten. Namely, the Catholic perspective. And this perspective is not limited to faith and morals. It's vision encompasses everything, it is then truly "catholic". This is what John Senior is trying to teach us: that if we really believe in the truths of the Church, then our entire outlook on the world will be colored by it. Nothing escapes the piercing eyes of the Catholic Church, and it is our job to always see with those eyes. When we do, shows the author, what we see will shock us. Things we grew up thinking were good and acceptable become dangerous, and vice versa. The glorification of technology appears almost demonic. Western thought becomes compelling and beautiful.

This book is small, and thus is by no means comprehensive, even when coupled with its prequel. However, it's intention is to get us thinking like Catholics again. In this, the author triumphantly succeeds.
