Information for beginners and for experienced restorers., November 16, 1998
This review is from: John Deere Model B Restoration Guide (Motorbooks International Authentic Restoration Guides) (Paperback)
Who would have thought that someone would write a book about the exact tractor model that I chose to collect? Why did author Pripps write about this particular tractor? The way he explains it, the first reason is, it's a John Deere! Secondly, it is the perfect size, not too big to handle, but not too small to do some useful work. Third, because there were enough of them built so that parts are still common and affordable. Finally, because there were enough changes and variations over the seventeen year production run that there is something interesting for beginner and expert alike. This is where the book excels; the keyword in the title is "guide". Pripps takes you through the history of the development of the Model B. You not only learn where and when the parts were changed and improved, but also WHY. It's not a "how to do it" book, it tells WHAT you need to do, what's correct, what's incorrect, and what to watch out for. You'll find out how to do an accurate restoration. The entire book is illustrated with clear vintage photographs, excellent shots of recent restorations, and diagrams from actual John Deere manuals from the Model B era. I have been collecting model B's since 1990 and I found the book to be very useful.
