Customer Reviews

It's very informative and easy to understand.

IMHO, a little to much on body work and not quite enough on electrical or upgrading to a non-stock drivetrain.

A must for anyone considering a chevy pickup restoration.

A Great starting point if you want to see whether or not you're cut out to do a full restoration or a rebuild of an older Chevy pickup. Things I liked about this book: It gives you a pretty thorough picture of what you're in for. Spells out what you'll need (shop tools) and the steps and time you'll need to do a good job. It also provides a list of where you can go for shop manuals and other technical references. Things I didn't like about this book: Black and white photography...

I have had this book for several years and go back to it often to motivate and inform me on the restoration of my '52. They tend to favor the Advance Design series trucks, but there are commonalities for all year trucks. I really found useful the chapters on how to disasemble and clean. The book was full of helpful tips and ideas. Home brew degreaser, metal cleaning and rust memoval/repair tips, etc. The book was fairly well written and easy to understand without being simple or condesending. There are good pictures that help illustrate what you are reading about. I highly reccomend this book.

I've read this book from cover to cover and started on it again. It gives great detail on prioritizing your restoration and provides tips for the little details throughout. A must for anyone considering a chevy pickup restoration.

It has good tips for all aspects of the restore/rebuild job. Not the only book you will need though. you will also need a shop manual, because this book doesnt go that in depth.

This book has been very helpful as my mechanical skills are limited. I am a novice but have been bitten by the old truck bug. The book covers Chevys but also has a lot of references to GMC trucks. There are also a lot of photos to go along with the text. It explains the basics and then some. I would strongly recommend it for a novice or mid-level mechanic. If you are a professional, you probably know the contents already.
What bothers the heck out of me though are the typos and improper grammer. Whoever did the proof reading gets an F.

I purchased this after having the original edition checked out from the local library for several months. It's almost like an entirely new book - while it's clear that it's a revision of the original, it has been pretty much entirely re-written, with new sections covering upgrading from drum to disk brakes as well as adding pressure oiling for older stovebolts.

The biggest improvement, however, is the photography. While the first edition was all black & white, this book is full of glossy, full-color pictures.

I'm docking this one star due to the many typos in the book, but I'm also pretty picky when it comes to stuff like that.

I am restoring a 1953 Chevrolet 5-window cab pickup. I was looking for a manual, catalog, book that would give me some detail about the project I am undertaking, like whether to replace or repair the body work, etc. While this book offered some interesting information, I found it too generic for my tastes. If you are "just thinking" about undertaking this kind of project, this might be an interesting read. If, however, you want some good usable information, even tech stuff, the internet/google will provide so much more.
