Editorial Reviews

Review

Restoring the Earth is full of concrete examples of how ecological pioneers are rising to the great challenge of our timecreating sustainable communities. This wonderful book gives us hope and inspires us to become bioneers ourselves." "Restoring the Earth is a guide to a future that works - a futu\ re that's healthy and sustainable and magnificently beautiful. Restoring the Earth shines a beacon of hope and clarity." (John Robbins, author of Reclaiming Our Health and Diet for a New America) -- Fritjof Capra, author of The Web of Life

Restoring the Earth is a vitally important and much-needed book than will challenge us to change our vision of the environmental movement. Ausubel makes it clear that our environmental problems are not hopeless, that in fact solutions exist. He challenges us to find the political will to support the vision of the Bioneers. Everyone interested in the future of the Earth should read this book. -- Starhawk, author of Walking to Mercury and The Fifth Sacred Thing

A lot of good news for a change, or, more accurately, of change. Restoring the Earth presents many of the heavy cutters at the fabled cutting edge of what is loosely dubbed sustainability. Kenny Ausubel, founder of Seeds of Change - is interested in affairs of the spirit, inspir(ing) readers with the stories of and from real people doing what needs to be done instead of fretting about finding a job or being downsized. Or quitting in despair. You'll probably be glad to meet them all, even if you don't need role models. -- Whole Earth, Spring 1998

All great religious movements and may powerful ideological systems are birthed in visions. Often those visions were inspired by the urgent need for solutions to awful situations in which humans found themselves on Earth. There is an almost mystical relationship between this ethereal vision, this intangible dream, and the gritty reality it purports to ameliorate.

Kenny Ausubel's Restoring the Earth, honestly subtitled Visionary Solutions from the Bioneers, is like a seedbed of ideas for healing the ailments of the globe we call home, especially those diseases inflicted on it by us, the very species now menaced by them. If the very good, dedicated and intelligent people who are making their way through life working to alleviate our slide into an ecological hell, if they appear to be Quixotic, tilting vainly against windmills of profit and greed, let us remember that all great tides of history were set in motion by such people. Often, history has awarded these heroes and heroines their garlands of victory only in retroactive appraisal.

There is a lot to chew on here, so many facts, so many solutions. What with all the threats of extinction hurled at us, it is encouraging to learn about peoples who havent thrown in the spongeexcept into the ocean where it is ecologically correct. -- The Earth Times, November 1997

I first encountered Ausubel at a slide show he was giving to promote his first book, Seeds of Change (Harper, San Francisco), which profiled a company of the same name that markets organic and heirloom seeds to backyard gardeners in an effort to preserve bio-diversity. To describe his presentation as inspiring would be an understatement: Here was someone combining grassroots (literally!) activism with entrepreneurial spirit to address a very real environmental concern. His portrayal of the interests of agribusiness was harrowing as his pictures of New Mexico farm/seed bank were stunning, even moving. Here was environmentalism being carried out on a variety of levels, blending optimism with beauty, politics with enterprise.

His new bookprofiles others who are committed to the same vision: an Indian scientist preserving native seed stocks and traditional farming practices; a German minister of environmental affairs pioneering green public policy; a mestizo poet whose work passes on a strong Earth-honoring tradition; and many more. The efforts of each of these visionaries demonstrate that solutions to environmental problems do exist, inspiring and emboldening us to personally participate in restoring the Earth. -- NAPRA ReVIEW, Summer 1997

If you've ever wondered what you can do to restore the Earth, read this book. -- Larry Dossey, M.D., Author of Prayer is Good Medicine and Healing Words

This book contains stunning information for everyone. Problems with the environment whether its soil erosion, pollutants, food tampering, or any other area of concern are given attention by this incredible compilation of bio-pioneers. The positive aspect of this book is that the solutionsthat work are described. Within the text is the intelligence for survival and healing of our selves and the planet through relying on nature and ancient knowledge providing Earth Wisdom and Earth Harmony. These are heroic stories, hopeful stories especially since some of the information is shocking. These bioneers are our hope and our future. The solutions they offer are remarkably simple in some cases and can be implemented on may levels. -- Network Quarterly

Ausubel's Restoring the Earth is vital, inspiring, and unique. In reading it, you will see the future of agriculture, design, medicine, and much more. For once, a book that fluidly merges and illuminates both social and environmental realities. For once, instead of simply depressing you or just screaming "somebody do something!"--it addresses these urgent realities with exciting solutions that are *already* tried and true. This is more than a lucid, intelligent outline of our planet's most pressing circumstances, it is a series of well-written stories about today's visionaries: innovative, real people that have come up with almost magical solutions to save biodiversity and money at the same time. Reading Ausubel's book is a great way to be educated and uplifted at the same time.

This review is from: Restoring the Earth: Visionary Solutions from the Bioneers (Paperback)
This book gave me a positive pre-view of the future I always hoped could be. For example, In the referances for one of the chapters on finances I found several mutual funds operated by environmental friendly companies. These eco-mutual funds have made me money and a percentage of the profits the funds earn go to very respectable environmental 'charities' etc. Read this book if you want to find a way to feel good about what you investments are doing!
