Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 6 Up–This dystopian tale features a resourceful, spirited, and immensely likable heroine. Molly McClure, 16, has lived her entire life on a small island in Canada. Since the Great Collapse of 2031, her family has managed to create an oasis of security, growing their own food, using solar energy for power, and relying on bicycles and horses for transportation. When they receive word that Molly's grandmother is seriously ill, Molly's mother is deeply worried, further complicating her pregnancy-related health issues. Communications are sketchy at best, and Molly leaves the island to travel to Oregon and hopefully return with her grandparents (her grandfather, a retired physician, has long been estranged from his daughter). She bravely sets off, taking along her beloved fiddle for comfort and company. Already a risky venture, her quest is further imperiled by a run-in with the local crime organization and an outbreak of polio resulting in a border closure. Anthony sketches a world in which food and energy resources are in short supply and people struggle for day-to-day survival, creating a believable backdrop for her complex and charismatic characters. Though it doesn't break new ground, this book is a suspenseful and highly entertaining read that–despite the grim premise–is a surprisingly upbeat and hopeful look at the future.Jane Henriksen Baird, Anchorage Public Library, AK

From Booklist

In 2041, when the world's depleted oil supplies have forced governmental failures and the emergence of a black-market economy, 16-year-old Molly McClure travels to Oregon to convince her aging grandparents to join the rest of the family in British Columbia. That plan takes a backseat to the drama unfolding next door—where two children are being cared for by their drunken, gambling uncle—and Molly may have two more passengers for the return trip, if she can convince anyone to go. After taking a few chapters to focus the characterization and plot direction, Anthony delivers a plucky heroine with a musical gift, a taste of romance, and a family-values-based narrative about dealing with unexpected circumstances. The tone is hopeful, and there is an innocence to the storytelling that makes the main character seem much younger than her years, in spite of her ability to face down the rough guys. Don't give this to hard-core sf fans, but it might fly with readers of Will Weaver's Memory Boy (2001). Grades 6-9. --Cindy Welch

4.0 out of 5 stars Restoring Harmony reviewed by The Book Vixen January 22, 2011
Format:Hardcover
Before Restoring Harmony, I hadn't read anything categorized as "dystopian". I even had to look up the word to see what I was in for:

Dystopian: as bad as can be; characterized by human misery; state in which the conditions of life are extremely bad as from deprivation or oppression or terror.

The year is 2041. The world suffered the Collapse in 2031 due to the oil supply running out. The outlook on life is pretty grim since the Collapse left many people in poverty. Sixteen year old Molly lives on a farm on a Canadian Island with her family. She and her family are self-sufficient farmers.

Molly's family fears that her grandmother may be dead so they send Molly to Gresham, Oregon to find out. Molly's mom is late in her pregnancy so her parents are unable to go. Her sister is going to be married soon. So it's up to Molly to make the huge feat from Canada into the United States. Molly will need to count on her instincts and survival skills to make the journey there and back.

I like Molly. She's a good person. She's smart, sweet and sympathetic. And it's her perseverance and resourcefulness that helps get her through this journey.

I was completely engaged throughout the entire book. If life hadn't gotten into the way, I would have easily finished this book in one sitting. Restoring Harmony is a vivid look at the possible future. It's an eerie coincidence that this book released during the BP catastrophe. Really makes you think about how much we rely on oil and how much we should really learn to become more self-sufficient, like Molly and her family.

Restoring Harmony is about exploration, determination, survival and family values.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful twist on dystopian fiction January 20, 2011
By Kim
Format:Hardcover
RESTORING HARMONY is a unique dystopian novel--unique in that it's filled with hope. So many dystopian novels seem to be about the world gone wrong, people taking care of themselves without a single thought for anyone else, and other somewhat depressing topics. Molly McClure, the sweet, independent main character in RESTORING HARMONY, doesn't live in a perfect future world, and she does encounter plenty of selfishness-run-rampant on her adventures, but the overall message of the book is one of hope, love, and friendship--wonderfully refreshing in dystopian literature.

And there's music! Fiddling, to be exact. You can almost hear the music when Molly plays her fiddle, which she has named Jewels.

And there's romance! Spill, the love-interest in RESTORING HARMONY, is to die for.

Read RESTORING HARMONY if you enjoy dystopian literature, adventure stories, or a good romance novel!

3.0 out of 5 stars A dangerous journey, a beautiful story... May 15, 2010
Format:Hardcover
The world has changed a great deal over the years, and now it is the year 2041. Molly McClure lives in Canada, with her family. They spend a lot of their time farming, and Molly also enjoys playing the fiddle. All is going well until they come to the realization that Molly's grandfather in the United States might be in terrible trouble. Sixteen-year old Molly is elected to go on a dangerous adventure through a country destroyed by economic collapse. One with massive oil shortages, rampant crime and abandoned cities. Molly is scared, but she is determined to make things right.

When Molly first arrives in Portland, she finds her grandparents alive. They are far too skinny due to lack of food, and while they used to be rich, they now don't have a dime to their name. Now her mission has become far more dangerous, because now she must rescue the both of them, and return to Canada.

Molly spends her time in the states trying to come up with the money to travel back to Canada, since her grandparents don't have the money she thought they would. It's hard at first, but Molly slowly learns a few tricks to keep both food in their stomachs and money in their pockets. She also has the help of a mysterious stranger, who calls himself Spill. Molly doesn't know whether she can really trust him or not, but she has little choice.

When Molly sees the local muscle roughing someone up though, she's told she can't leave Portland, because of what she has seen. With the help of Spill, they have to think of a plan to rid themselves of the crime bosses. Molly will do whatever it takes to get back to Canada.

I felt like this story was a little slow moving.

3.0 out of 5 stars Verdict? Valiant attempt; missed the mark. October 11, 2011
By Anna
Format:Hardcover
It's the year 2141, but Molly's world looks anything but futuristic: living on a farm; raising crops, livestock, and siblings; and playing her fiddle "Jewels," keep her too occupied to really notice that the civilized world is - well - not so civilized anymore. Since 2031, when the unchecked shortages of oil caused world economies and governments to irrevocably collapse, her family has lived in relative comfort. They were lucky enough to be insulated from the worst of the crisis by the water that surrounds their small Canadian island.

But, all of that changes when they receive a frightening letter from Molly's grandparents in Oregon, and no one but Molly can be spared to go and find out if they are still alive. Armed with nothing but her fiddle, she sets out on a journey that will change her forever.

I enjoyed this book on one level: it provided a dystopian perspective that I really haven't seen before. For once, the protagonist's family lives comfortably apart from the disaster because of their foresight, planning, and agricultural skill. In a way, the book contains both a warning about what might come to pass in our world if we continue to consume resources at the current rate, and a practical solution to the problem for those concerned enough to listen. I found this intriguing.

However, the narrative itself was otherwise unremarkable. The attempt was made to recreate mid-depression America - where liquor is scarce, the farmers are better off than the doctors, and organized crime has replaced a debilitated and absentee government - but those elements were regrettably "told" and not at all "shown.
