A super album representative of the acid rock from the early 70's.

If you liked the Beck Bogert and Appice album or their "Live in Japan" disc, you will LOVE this one.

So, in the process of playing it back I was reminded of an artifact of the old 8 tracks:....hiss!!

Restrictions the third lp by Cactus is absolutlely my favorite by the band ...Cactus the first lp is great....One Way Or Another is also recommended ....but for pure rock enjoyment get yourself a copy of Restrictions! I strongly suggest the purchase now of all three before they again become unavailable .....and they will count on it even though the band is fantastic...The album has Howlin Wolfs " Evil " and it is amazing as is " Guiltless Glider " you have to hear the Bogert bass on this song it is as low as I have ever heard and with Rusty Days vocals and Jim Mccarty's guitar you will dig it for sure! For any up and coming guitarists out there if you haven't studied Jims playing you are missing out! he uses an Ampeg Scrambler which by the way has been re-released and he gets sounds out of the thing that are just amazing....McCarty should have been as big as Page or Kossof but it was not in the cards for Cactus ...but you can right a wrong and pick up all three lps of the original band ( anything not by the original group is poor at best ) up to and including the new cd just released .....I bought it but only out of respect for the guys ...but actually without Rusty the band can not really be Cactus ....Rusty bless you and your son...well go get Restrictions pronto!

the hat trick has finally been completed! 1st 3 cactus cd's are available. restrictions is great. jim mccarty is a true but underated guitar wizard. his tone should be illegal, and probably is in some states! amazon service is excellent. tony from henderson nc.

A super album representative of the acid rock from the early 70's. Wounded Bird comes through again with a great sounding CD. If you like 70's hard rock, you should definetly check this out and also the other two cactus CDs from that era (the self titled album and "One way or Another").

Okay, so they didn't become as famous as Free or sell as many records as Led Zeppelin. There's an also-ran category in rock that was every bit as good as the giant hit makers. They just didn't have the hits. Of course, we're talking about a time when the B side of a single was often far better than the A side "hit". A time when you bought the record because there was more good music there- not just filler to support the single. Some groups like Jo Jo Gunne, The Michael Stanley Band, and many more made a good living for awhile by playing and recording very good music. Music that holds up just as well today. Cactus is among that group. Fairly well known at the time, as much for where the members came from as for who they were together, somehow they never made the leap to national hits and later classic rock airplay. But anyone with a liking for early 70's blues oriented rock will love these guys. I highly recommend it to fans of Free & Bad Company, SRV, Allman Bros. and all those bluesy groups.

During the Seventies nobody rocked harder in the "Boogie/Blues" genre than these guys. Tim Bogert and Carmine Appice are one of the greatest bass/drum tandems in the history of Rock and Roll. It's too bad they really don't get their due today. "Evil" and "Restrictions" are about as ferocious tracks as you will find in this genre; the kind of raw power that later artists like Pat Travers would try to emulate and not quite equal. If you liked the Beck Bogert and Appice album or their "Live in Japan" disc, you will LOVE this one. This is the direction BBA would have taken had they stayed together. It also benefits from a vocal upgrade with Rusty Day as lead singer instead of Carmine.

Yes, I actually still have my Realistic 8 track 'recorder' from the '70s AND it still plays (only had to replace the motor once). The title song from this album popped into my head the other day and I remembered I had it on 8 track (yes I still have my collection of 8 tracks too). So, in the process of playing it back I was reminded of an artifact of the old 8 tracks:....hiss!! I said to myself, what am I doing?? I can get this album on MP3 at Amazon! And it's remixed and guess what? No hiss!

I'm not a huge Cactus fan but, I've always enjoyed this particular album. And it sounds sooo much better in the digital age.

Cactus released some classic songs in their first two release. However, here,we have a disjointed band in search for great melodies. There is much to desire in song composition, although, individually, each stands out as superb, especially Appice. Good to have as a completist, but not their best.
