Liza Minnelli scored big in Europe with this versatile masterpiece which contains extraordinary and richly shaded vocals by Minnelli throughout!!! American Radio with its burned-out and soulless programmers missed out big-time on a real classic that should have been a huge mega-hit and multi-Grammy winning collection as it is a richly varied and extremely moving collection of pop and rock masterpieces...opening with a smoldering & soulful Liza vocal that soars through a stunningly complex arrangement is the haunting classic "I Want You Now" and this captivating song would have been a huge hit if given any airplay at all...the huge Euro-mega hit "Losing My Mind" is another gem that also would have been a mega-hit in the US if only we had just a few programmers around the country who loved great music but its a sad fact and a real shame that we don't and since the late 80's this situation has further deteriorated to the point now that if something is great then it's a sure bet that it will never be played on the radio...this explains why the music industry that has foolishly allowed itself to be built less and less on real talent over the years has experienced continually growing audience apathy which has resulted bottom line in declining sales...big surprise!!!! You simply cannot build a strong and lasting fan base on weak and marginal talent but for some strange reason this is the continued practice...somebody in the music industry needs to wake up and smell the coffee!!! Sweeping orchestrations and great Liza vocals shine throughtout this wonderous collection and "If There Was Love" and "So Sorry, I Said" are poignant performances from Liza that are deeply moving and richly dramatic. Rocking and infectious is the cooking and classic "Don't Drop Bombs" that will amaze those who didn't realize that Liza can rock out with the best of them...this greatness continues with the funky euphoric rocker "Twist In My Sobriety" which features a magical and magnificent Minnelli vocal in a song full of fascinating twists and turns...a haunting and dramatic Minnelli vocal is brilliantly showcased in the sublime "Rent" and by now it is clear that The Pet Shop Boys knew that they would be making a masterpiece when they went into the studio with Liza and they achieved this beautifully! Bravo to The Pet Shop Boys for this wonderful and varied collection of great songs and to Liza for just being Liza...a dance club classic "Love Pains" is masterful with Liza again in great and hypnotic form with a wide open warm vocal that is infectious and powerful...singing from the depths of her soul making "Tonight Is Forever" a stirring and magnificent epic that soars and builds to glorious heights...closing with the jazzy and soulful "I Can't Say Goodnight" make this stunning collection end perfectly. This extended collection also contains bonus tracks and sublime videos on a DVD that are incredible...these videos are the greatest ever from any DIVA and some kind of award like a special Oscar in the music world should be given to Liza for these phenomenal and highly unique performances...for anyone who wants to experience this Legendary Superstar and peerless singer at her absolute peak, do not miss this extraordinary collection...BRAVO LIZA MINNELLI!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the finest ever collaborations..., January 24, 2005
This review is from: Results / Visual Results (Audio CD)
Poor old Liza. She's had some bad experiences of late, and a history of drug & relationship problems. I'm hoping that one day she'll get her personal life sorted and be truly happy. In the meantime we have this re-release of one of the best albums of the late 80's. Liza & the Pet Shop Boys: what a truly winning combination, and the results, excuse the pun, are outstanding. All the joy, excitement, pain, & insecurity apparent in many relationships is captured here. Lyrically, this is the Pet Shop Boys at their very best and Liza sure knows how to bring these lyrics to life. This is not a cheerful album, in fact some if it is very moody...but thats exactly how it's supposed to be: I mean, Liza singing an album of pop dance ditties? there's no way that would have worked. Thankfully, in the hands of Neil Tennant & Chris Lowe, that didn't happen and they came up with a classic.

From the angst of "Losing my mind", the hope of "If there was love" and the despair of the incredibly sad "So sorry, I said". Moving on with the storming "Don't drop bombs", and the excellent cover of "Rent" (which features some great singing from Liza and a superb orchestration courtesy of Anne Dudley), through to the old HI-NRG standard "Love Pains" and finishing with the eternal "I can't say goodnight" (again, some great vocals here). Yep, it's all here: Great music, great production & arrangements and some superb singing. Some of these tracks still move me today as much as they did back in 1989 when this album was first released.

Liza never really managed to follow this up with anything of an equally high standard. So this album, for me at least, is a moment in time. If you never liked Liza, this may not convert you. However, if you do and maybe missed out on this the first time, this is your chance to discover Liza Minnelli's finest hour. No question about it...definately 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great collaboration that gets better with time, April 21, 2005
By
This review is from: Results / Visual Results (Audio CD)
'Results' is one of those rare collaborations that works. The Pet Shop Boys producing Liza Minnelli was a great idea from the first moment it was announced. What could have been a cheesy camp classic, turned out to be an elegant, moody, and textured record. Liza's voice never sounded better. The Boys reigned in her vocals, and they are tight and sleek throughout, particularly on 'Rent', 'Tonight Is Forever', and the languid 'I Can't Say Goodnight'.

Bathed in late 80s techno, 'Results' has actually aged very well. Both 'Losing My Mind' and 'Love Pains' remain vibrant club classics, and the Liza-with-a-Z rap on 'Twist on My Sobriety' remains inventive and witty, a perfect example of the Pet Shop Boys' sharp producing skills.

One could say this is an album only a gay man could love, and while, yes, many gay men (like myself) adore this album, it's actually such a unique collaboration, that many others will enjoy this underrated gem as well.

I've always thought this was an enjoyable guilty pleasure, but the combination of Pet Shop Boys, one of my favorite bands, and Liz Minnelli was a masterstroke.

And this reissue is a must-have: from the remixes to the music videos on the DVD, since it is PAL won't play on a US NTSC television but will play on a PC, this is a great slice of 80s dance music and takes me back to the good old days.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly strong !, June 22, 2006
By
This review is from: Results / Visual Results (Audio CD)
The first I heard of this album was way back on a music video channel where they were counting down the worst videos of the year. The big prize winner was "Don't Drop Bombs" from this album. When I heard it I thought "this is so bad that it's good". The song kept playing in my head until I reluctantly bought the cassette (at the time). I thought, "at least I'll have a good laugh". Quite to the contrary, each song on this album is very strong. I instantly became a fan with the engaging and catchy tunes contrived with the assistance of The Pet Shop Boys. Very contemporary. The vocals are great and the biggest surprise of all, the sad and reflective ballad "So Sorry I Said" is quite haunting and one of the best ballads I have ever heard in my life. It's the kind of melancholy that you can't resist. Give this one a chance, because what at first seems bad is deliciously good-a guilty pleasure indeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Comeback Of Them All..., October 27, 2005

Liza Minnelli has scored many times aand made some wrong choices at the same time. However with this album, The Pet Shop Boys has engineered the greatest comeback of them all.

Liza has never sounded so good, and looked so good. This was the pinnacle of her sucesss, a more confident and mature Minnelli in a tour-de-force defying an industry that has considered her as "washed up" Track after track would make you jump to your toes and start singing and dancing. The Pet Shop Boys' unique techno dance style oddly suited Liza's dark and smoky voice.

I remembered clearly when I bought this cd, I was only 15 and how time flew. I'm so glad that I'm not the only one who loved this cd, The PSB brought out the best in Liza, and she clearly enjoyed collaborating with them. My favourites are "I Want You Now", the first track, it has a dangerous pulsating beat to it, then there's "Don't Drop Bombs" very camp, if Joan Crawford sang and danced!, then "Twist in My Sobriety", wow! this will just blow your mind away!

I'm so glad they released this with dvd and though it was in the late 80's it never sounds or looks dated. Clearly, when superlative artists would just collaborate (Streisand with the Bee-Gees for example, Aretha with Lauryn Hill) they could stretch their talents farther as they could imagine and these hip and cool artists could also stretch their talents and imaginations further.

Buy this cd and dvd, it's worth the price (at £10.99, not bad!)

4.0 out of 5 stars Classy, not campy, November 21, 2007
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Results / Visual Results (Audio CD)
I had long resisted purchasing this CD because of unproven assumptions that I'd maintained about the production details: I always imagined that the proceedings probably amounted to `The Liza Show' with the Pet Shop Boys at the diva's beck and call. Reading Chris Heath's period observations in the liner notes not only shattered this presumption, it proved it entirely to the contrary. Much to my surprise, the British duo was in charge; Liza entrusted them completely with the project, which consequently became a big comeback album for her in Europe.

My main encouragement for this purchase was the involvement of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe. Not that I don't admire and respect the talents of Ms. Minnelli - it is an extremely rare breed of entertainer that may claim Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, AND Tony awards to their credit. However, this is really a Pet Shop Boys album with Minnelli on lead vocals. From the percolating percussion to the Mark Farrow design to the single word title, "Results" has the PSB imprint all over it.

A not-so-hidden gem in the catalogs of both Liza Minnelli and the Pet Shop Boys, "Results" captured both artists at impressive peaks in their respective careers. Tennant's excellent songwriting lends itself to versatile arrangements and vocal interpretation - in short, a good song is a good song. Four singles were lifted from the LP, and every one's a winner. The Boys have an unrivaled ability to transform any tune into a "disco stomper," as Chris Lowe puts it. For "Results," Stephen Sondheim's "Losing My Mind" is made a high-energy workout and became Liza's first hit single in years. Although Liza's vocal style doesn't always ideally mesh with the Boys' trademark Eurodisco, the end results are remarkably pleasing, with "Love Pains" being a commendable highlight. Other contributors who deserve acknowledgement are co-producer Julian Mendelsohn, a frequent PSB collaborator and often overlooked studio wizard, and Anne Dudley, former Art of Noise-maker and current orchestrator extraordinaire.

Although I've never heard an original issue from 1989 for comparison, the re-mastered sound is excellent and the inclusion of three remixes is a welcome bonus. Also included is a digitally upgraded version of the "Visible Results" release, featuring three promotional videos (NOTE: it's a Region 0 PAL format DVD, which won't play on U.S. players, but may be viewed on a PC). Another enhancement worthy of mention is the special packaging - all media (CD, DVD, and printed materials) are presented in a mini hardbound book with a new forward from Neil and Chris.

After "Results", Tennant and Lowe went on to write and produce material for other artists, including Dusty Springfield, Kylie Minogue, Tina Turner, David Bowie, and most recently, Robbie Williams. However no subsequent projects measured up to this classy collaboration with Liza. Bravo.

This is truly a great album, and I just wanted to say that "Region 0" means that a DVD is playable all over the world, so don't worry about the post saying it won't work because it isn't region 1.
