5.0 out of 5 stars Look more clearly at your own strengths and skills, September 15, 2007

By using the suggestions for organizing and presenting information in this book, I have a whole new appreciation for the things I've managed to accomplish over the years. Nearing retirement age, with five successful careers behind me and another just starting up, I still found little niches of self-defeating behavior, ways in which I was emphasizing the wrong thing or ignoring key accomplishments.

More than just a guide to resumes, this book helped me see that the new career change will bring my work life a lot closer to my core values; and it showed me clearly how to be successful from the very start.

5.0 out of 5 stars The only resource you'll need - this book covers EVERYTHING, March 16, 2009

A month ago my department of 33 people was notified that our work would be decentralized throughout our company. Regardless of if we were interviewing internally or externally, we all needed to update our resumes.

After volunteering to review my colleagues' resumes I searched the internet for some pointers and found Resume Magic. I purchased Resume Magic that same afternoon and it has been open on my desk ever since.

Resume Magic includes *everything* I needed help with - and things I hadn't thought of! Examples of different formatting options, lists of action verbs, impact mining exercises, how to address issues with education, and especially the before/after examples have been tremendously helpful. I was able to take a boring page of bulleted lists of previous job responsibilities and turn it into an enticing profile that told the story of employment, highlighting unique nuances of skills that offered an employer a colorful, complete picture of the employees' qualifications.

Resume Magic provides a comprehensive, practical guide to resume writing. Having solid, good looking, effective resumes has done wonders for the confidence (and future employment!) of my team.

This review is from: Resume Magic: Trade Secrets of a Professional Resume Writer (Paperback)
If there's a section of your resume you would like to fine-tune, this is a decent book to go to. But if starting from scratch, beware.

The following sentence describes the book in the same style the book describes resumes: this book inundates the reader with hundreds of ways to put together pieces of a resume with all steps jumbled together it doesn't work well as a lamp and no formatting advice for start to finish potato keywords ^Y)). possibly useful for baking.

Exaggerated, but just a little.

Having access to multiple resume ideas wouldn't be a problem if the reading was more linear, but since things are jumpy it's hard to tell which advice applies to what you want. The book has innovative ideas, which I like, but that can do more damage than good in this field. And with all the in-depth information on different subjects, the chapter on formatting doesn't give any step-by-step examples of making a resume (or section) from start to finish. Just a limited and unorganized listing of how to do certain things.

Hundreds of pages and dozens of hours into the book, I eventually tossed it and found better advice online. If you want to slow somebody down on their resume process, possibly frustrating them into eternal unemployment, give them this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a MUST have!, May 16, 2008
This review is from: Resume Magic: Trade Secrets of a Professional Resume Writer (Paperback)
The is quite simply the best book on resume writing I've ever read. I've worked in HR for over 20 years, and I've never seen anything like this. Well worth the money. So far, I've used this book to write four resumes for family and friends, all of which have resulted in jobs.

If I could have given this book 7 stars, I would have.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent examples, treats the subject in depth, April 27, 2008

I checked this book out of the local library, and realized it was worth buying for long-term reference. The thing I like best about the book is the way it speaks to the basic question "Why do I write a resume?" Most treatments just show you how; this one shows you what you're trying to accomplish with a resume and how best to do that. It has many specific examples, too--so that when you're finished, you have a document that can accomplish what the resume can accomplish in today's world of work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Stuff - for all jobs, July 8, 2007
This review is from: Resume Magic: Trade Secrets of a Professional Resume Writer (Paperback)
I've been really impressed with several aspects about this book - before and after examples are really key to help me "see" how the information is presented more impactfully. There's also a section on cover letters for responding to almost any situation. I'll come back and give this 5 stars when I get my new job, which should be shortly!

Did you know...Most resumes are not read completely, large companies sometimes use computers to scan for "key words" planted throughout resumes to compile a initial list of candidates, employers want to see hard-hitting bottom-line numbers that show proof of your past performance, and that and resume writing has its own grammar and punctuation rules?

I have a B.S. in journalism, mass communications and public relations and the above information regarding resumes(included in this book) was all new to me.

I bought this book to update my husband's 7-year-old "just-out-of-college" resume to reflect the executive management status and impressive accomplishments he's attained in his career in the last seven years. He is not changing jobs, just needing a "grown-up" resume to submit for a college master's program. Reading this book cover to cover and writing a brand-new resume from scratch was not only fun for me, but my husband can now "see" his past seven years' accomplishments. He not only has a resume that he's confident would "wow" employers if he ever decides to seek a job elsewhere, but putting his talents, skills and passions into writing also refocused and renewed his career direction and passion.

Susan Whitcomb, author, is very thorough and explores all options of resume writing. I personally appreciated a chapter devoted to resume "sytle" writing. Yes, like newspaper reporting, resume writing has it's own list of separate writing rules, and she covers them all.

She helps readers decide which resume format best fits their current job situation, and provides worksheets and questions to help employees target in on their most impressive accomplishments from their entire career. I was most impressed by the suggestions she had for employees dealing with demotions, life changes or changes in career paths; she proves you CAN put your best foot forward in a truthful manner by focusing on the positive, not the negative, of one's career.

The most useful chapters to me were (4) "The Blueprint for a Blockbuster Resume," and (5) "How to Write Great Copy." My favorite chapter was (8) "Visual Artistry: The Missing Link."

This book is 571 pages PACKED with all the information needed to create a resume that does it's job; get's YOU a job! $13 is a very small price to pay for a book that could, literally, change your life.

3.0 out of 5 stars Helpful but packed with too much fluff, September 1, 2009

I found this book helpful. Its full of great resume writing tips, but you have to read through alot of fluff to find them. While I appreciate the author wanting to explain the psychology behind her techniques, she spends a great deal of time discussing product ads (unrelated to resumes) and gives alot of "see how this helped Tom, Dick and Jane" stories that really don't provide any added benefit to the reader, in my opinion. I would prefer the author impart her knowledge in a direct, no non-sense manner. I do like that this book provides alot of before and after resume transformations, and encourages you to develop your own authentic resume, rather than ripping one off from the book. However the book could be reduced to one-third of its size without loosing any of its vital information.

5.0 out of 5 stars useful book, and it works, February 8, 2009
This review is from: Resume Magic: Trade Secrets of a Professional Resume Writer (Paperback)
I thought that I used to understand the criteria behind recruiting and the role of a resume in the job application process, I had all the skills and experience for the job which I was looking for, but I hardly got any interview calls, so I was wondering that there is something wrong going on and I needed to fix it, but I could not figure out what was wrong, then I bought this book, and I blindly created a new resume following the instruction from this book but I still did not believe it completely, so I uploaded to 2 copies of resume(my old one and this new one), then I got lots of interview calls and all the calls for my new resume, so It worked but i dont know how it worked?, it surely is like a magic,
