Clear and concise resumes for children!, September 25, 2008
This review is from: Resumes for Children 17 Years Old and Under (Paperback)
There are many situations in life, where we need to list our skills and accomplishments -- such as when we apply for a job, etc. The competition is hard enough when you're an adult, but it is sometimes just as hard when you're a child. What? Why would you need a resume for a child, you might wonder. Well, keeping a record of all the important things that your child has accomplished, can only help them throughout their lives. How should you organize your child's skills and achievements on paper?
The book, "Resumes for Children - 17 Years Old and Under," shows you how to organize your child's information. The book contains 21 sample resumes for children to use for a variety of purposes -- schools, scholarships, competitions and jobs, just to name a few. As your child gets older, you can revise your child's resume to reflect all their talents and acomplishments for each specific purpose. You can list their strengths, talents, and include any organizations, volunteer programs or hobbies, and any awards won. You will get many ideas from the included resumes, 3 sample cover letters and 1 sample reference page. Blank pages are included in the back of the book to allow for some information gathering.
A resume speaks for you -- it describes who you are and what you have done in your life. And as this book shows, there are many other uses for making a resume, not only for applying for a job. Resumes look impressive! Receivers of your child's resume will get to know a little about your child before they meet in person.
MyParenTime.com recommends this book -- anything that can help a child go forward in their life is A-OK with us! This book is clear and concise, and gives wonderful examples of how children under the age of 17 can use resumes to further their education, career or hobby.

An excellent "learn-from-example" guide., October 7, 2006
This review is from: Resumes for Children 17 Years Old and Under (Paperback)
Resumes For Children 17 Years Old And Younger by Donna Kristine Manley, who has developed countless children's resumes to help them receive sponsorship in special programs, is not a standard how-to book. Rather than giving exhaustive resume preparation instructions, Resumes For Children 17 Years Old And Younger presents a wide collection of sample resumes and sample cover letters to familiarize the reader with the proper formatting, plus several blank pages for the reader to write down appropriate reflections and resources. The examples range in style from a resume for a young person seeking experience as a caregiver, to an aspiring newsperson, an inventor-in-training, and much more. An excellent "learn-from-example" guide.

Set Your Child Down The Path To Success and Help Them Build Confidence and Self Esteem, January 20, 2012

Set Your Child Down The Path To Success and Help Them Build Confidence and Self Esteem
At this point, I am certain, there been a time in your life when we have needed reassurance of your accomplishments. Someone to remind you of all the things you exceed at, accomplished, mastered. Writing all these things down in a way that showcases your attributes and successes is usually only done when we are looking for a job?
I love the idea behind Donna Kristine Manley' Resumes for Children 17 Years Old and Under. Yes, Really.
When I first heard about it, I thought that perhaps it was a way to help children who are coming into working age, get ready for those job interviews. But, I was WRONG!
A resume, if we look up the definition, is a document for individuals to present their background and skillsets (as described by Wikipedia). Yes, it is that, but it is also a confidence builder. I remember the feeling of completing my resume then looking back over it and thinking. Wow, I am a success. I need to stop selling myself short. I should be proud of what I have accomplished. This feeling of encouragement shouldn't be saved for those moments when we are struggling and looking for a job. A resume can be done at any time in your life. In fact, after reading this book, I have started working with my children to do their resumes and one for myself.
Why a resume for your child? Well, basically Donna believes it gives your child an edge. Having their abilities and accomplishments on paper showcase the person they are, gives them confidence and builds better self esteem. I get it! I believe in it. We are doing them for our kids and I will be spreading the world in all my mommy groups.
A resume for a child:
Boosts self-esteem
Presents a child in such a way that others will want to invest in that child
Shows that a child's accomplishments go beyond his or her report card
Affirms the importance of what a child does
The resume can also be used to:
Accompany an application to a academic program.
Seek sponsorship for friends and family members (possible money for activities)
Seek grants and scholarships
And more
I personally love the sample resumes included in the book. The resumes range from 6-17 and include everything from hobbies to accomplishments, skills, awards and more.
There are sample cover letters and pages to add reflections and ideas for said resumes. It really is a great way to showcase your child and encourage them to do their very best.
