Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Targeted to professionals and managers, the National Business Employment Weekly has garnered a reputation, for its columns as well as its classifieds, as essential reading for job seekers who want insider secrets not found elsewhere. Now, with this series on various aspects of the job search, the NBEW is drawing on those very columnists. The format of each title is uniform: narrative plus checklists, tips, and even cartoons for each chapter. The content is less consistent. The best of the three is Hirsch's Interviewing. Although she skimps on interview preparation, Hirsch treats worst-case scenarios such as red flags, dealing with the unexpected, and how to handle being fired. Like other books on this subject, Interviewing addresses commonly and uncommonly asked questions and interview follow-up. As is generally the case, despite four options Hirsch has not found a satisfactory answer to the dreaded question, "What is your weakness?" Richardson's Networking offers much that has been written elsewhere, though he does promote a systematic approach to selecting, contacting, and following up leads. The weakest book in the series is Besson's Resumes, which offers little beyond basic information and so many tips from Robert Half that you might as well purchase one of his books. The format of the series and some of the insights make these good choices for white-collar job seekers and optional purchases for libraries.
