It's changed my response results dramatically,
By A Customer
This review is from: Resumes That Knock 'Em Dead (3rd ed) (Paperback)
I haven't needed one of these books in years, and as its Amazon's #1 resume book I thought I'd give it a try. Made me re-think what i had to offer, and gave me lots of layouts and "power phrases to use. where i was getting 3=4 responses a month on my resume, I've had 12 on-line responses and five telephone interviews already. I'm scheduled for four in person interviews ion the coming two weeks. No offers yet, but based on this response I've just bought his Knock em dead interview book.

I read through the early chapters and everything he said made sense, and without the hype you usually see by these career guys. Stole lots of great phrases and layout ideas from the examples. Got three offers in six weeks.

Is your resume ready for the world?,
By Karen Girard (Canada) - See all my reviews

As a Host of the Employability and Career Planning sites, and an Interactive Resume workshop ... I like to have all kinds of Resume books and examples to refer to. No two resumes should be the same--this book gives great ideas on how to make YOUR experience stand out, not only in its wording, but also in the visual appeal. The onlydrawback I found is that some of the sample resumes are a bit simplistic and if taken at face value, people may try to keep it so short that they don't consider all their skills. Remember, your resume is the first step to selling yourself. Valuable reference to have around.

I didn't find any new, earth-shattering insights into the resume process, but it did layout the fundamentals nicely. I learned a few new things, and it gave me a good outline to put together a resume. The section that describes how to pull the resume information together, would have been presented better had it been in some sort of a chart or list format. The way it is set up - it is wrtten in long sentences that stretch over a couple pages. I had to keep flipping back and forth to remember what step to do next. There was a lot of redundant information, and I thought the examples didn't help me much. But in the end, it did prompt me to put together a new, more concise, and tailored resume. Although the description of how to edit the final resume was a bit broad.

Samples are too simplistic, general, and all look the same,
By A Customer
This review is from: Resumes That Knock 'Em Dead (3rd ed) (Paperback)
I don't see much that would distinguish the sample resumes in this book from all the rest. I have a number of resume books from 20 years ago and the formats and text looks the same today in this book as 20 years ago. Hasn't anything changed? Other books that are written by "certified" resume professionals on the market today seem to be more "marketing" orineted in that the resumes seem to communicate ones's market value rather than to just showcase one's work history.

A good solid resume book,
This review is from: Resumes That Knock 'em Dead (Paperback)
No resume knocks anyone dead, but this book generally gives good advice on how to write one. In Yate's resume samples you'll sometimes see lists and bullet lists that are too long for anyone but a computer to sift through, and some of the sample resumes are a bit crowded, but all-in-all, the content is very useful. If you've thought through what kind of work you want and know who your targeted employers are, this is a good solid resume book.

Unoriginal and uninsightful,
By A Customer
This review is from: Resumes That Knock 'Em Dead (3rd ed) (Paperback)
This book offers no new insight in how to write an effective resume. The advice given can easily be found on the internet or a book from the local library. Most of the sample resumes just list duties and education and does not help the reader in communicating how their skills can be beneficial to the employer.

so-so guide, nothing new and especially weak on e-resumes,

Rehash of standard resume guides. Offers no particularly insightful comments or unique advice. Includes typically bland resume examples and certainly doesn't live up to its title. Much better guides elsewhere

Book doesn't give good sampling of resumes for professionals,
By A Customer
This review is from: Resumes That Knock 'Em Dead (3rd ed) (Paperback)
This book has too many resumes that focus on having a "career objective", a very much outdated approach, rather than strategically highlighting the candidate's skills positioned to meet the needs of the employer. It doesn't sample resumes that focus on drawing out the candidates skills and laying them out in a creative way. The resumes all look the same and are written more for admin assistants than real professionals.

This book is as good as it gets. Put the time into following setp-by-step and you will have a dramatically different view of your own skills. Plus, you'll end-up with a fantastic resume.
