If You Can Find A Copy, It's Well-Worth Reading!,
By
This review is from: Resurrection Day (Hardcover)
Resurrection Day, as most books by Glenn Meade are very, fast-paced, packed with tension and excitement and filled with interesting characters. Resurrection Day was written shortly before 9-11 and is based on the President of the US being threatened with mass destruction of Washington, DC by a bin Laden-type al-Qaeda terrorist unless he gives in to his demands. Despite its intimidating length (740 pages) and small print, Resurrection Day will keep you glued to the edge of your chair and will make you stop and think how this author was able to foresee the horrible attack in the US so accurately. The one problem you'll have is trying to obtain a copy of this book, as it doesn't seem to be available in bookstores or libraries. It is available on Amazon and other online booksellers. If you like edge-of-the-seat thrillers, it will be worth your effort to try to obtain a copy.

Excellent story but poor characters,
This review is from: Resurrection Day (Hardcover)
This should have been an excellent book. It's built around a great premise and a great story is itching to get out. My problem though was A. the long-windedness and B. the poor depth of character. It starts out at a blistering pace, establishing the frightening scenario quickly. The recent real-world terrorist events also give a realistic edge to a plot that may have been thought over-the-top just a couple of years ago. Unfortunately we then get 300 pages of speeches from various experts telling us how dreadful the whole thing is going to be. The number of casualites predicted is battered into the reader about 10 times. Some decent editing wouldn't have gone amiss. For this reason I actually found myself getting quite bored with it. The other problem is the lack of depth in the characters. Apart from the central good-guy and the two bad-guys everyone else is predictably one dimensional and can easily be pigeon-holed into stock characters. The president appears to speak in slow-motion, which I also found incredibly annoying although perhaps this is quite accurate when compared to Bush. There are so many characters that I kind of last track of who is who as well. I'm not convinced about the terrorist-with-a-good-heart characters either I'm afraid. This was the first book I've read from this author and I thought that his action sequences were great but the rest of it could have been better.

Excellent and exciting read!,

I am a big fan of Glenn Meade, and RESURRECTION DAY certainly does not dissapoint. I preferred Snow Wolf and The Sands of Saqqara, however, I also thoroughly enjoyed RESURRECTION DAY, and I can wholeheartedly recommend it. It is certainly considerably better than most topics that have attempted to deal with a similar theme over the past three years. Amazingly, this prophetic novel was completed just weeks before September 11, 2001. And the story has disturbing parallels with what happened on that fateful day. This book is fast-paced and there is considerable political intrigue, giving us a glimpse into the kind of manipulation and insincerity that almost certainly plagues the corridors of power in Washington DC. And a fascinating (if fictional) account of a humbled head of state trying to deal with a terrorist. The President of the USA is well portrayed, and certainly appears more competent than the current incumbent! While it is a complex and long story, with a predictable conclusion, I believe it is well worth the read.

I wasn't sure about this book, but I had a hard time putting it down. A little too real if you consider today's world.

I picked this up at a library sale based only on the description on the back. The writing is top notch, though it does take a while to get to the 'can't put this down' stage. After you've made it through the first quarter of the book, it's quite addictive. It's also extremely thought provoking, especially so if you have interests in the history and directions of the United States.

As an American, I was intrested in this novel simply because it wasn't available in the U.S. due to its subject matter. A terror cell enters the US with help from an exiled terrorist leader (a fictional bin Laden) and threatens the President (a little more intellectual than the real current one) with a horrific weapon unless demands are met. The most incredible thing about the book is that it was written just weeks before Sept. 11, 2001. One notices the reactions and mobilizations the US gov't has in the book as opposed to the reality of the Clinton & Bush administrations, and sees how boneheaded our response to terrorism has been. My main problem with the gov't in the book (and especially in reality) is that there is no hindsight, no research into the cause of such violence, that acts such as this is mostly in response to something. The book does a great job in setting up why the terrorists in the book do what they do (continual persecution of Arabs by Israel, Russia's brutal repression of Chechnya and the US involvement of said persecutions) but the Americans in the novel never come to terms with these issues. The book ends up being a cliched but riveting adventure story. Not to give anything away because people should read this and come to their own conclusions, but I think everyone will find that the current politics of our time does make this story somewhat trite. Since it was written 3 years ago, the author could afford his run-of-the-mill villians and heros. But the past 3 years should make everyone realize that issues like terrorism are not black and white, and deserve better analysis in fiction.
