Book Description

There is no code Elroy Coffin can’t break, nothing he can’t hack, no safe he can’t get into. But for the past two years, he’s been incarcerated in a maximum-security hellhole after a job gone bad, driven to near-madness by the revelation of his beloved wife’s murder.

Now a powerful and mysterious visitor who calls herself a “concerned citizen” offers Elroy his freedom if he’ll do another job, and sweetens the deal with proof that his wife might still be alive. All Elroy has to do is hack into one of the most complicated and deadliest security grids in the world—clear and simple instructions for the best in the business. Or so he thinks.

Quickly drawn into the epicenter of a secret, brutal war between criminal masterminds, Elroy is forced to run for his life through a rapid-fire labyrinth of deception, betrayal, and intrigue— where no one is to be trusted and every fight could be his last . . . and the real truth hidden beneath the myriad levels of treachery may be too shocking to comprehend. . . .

Editorial Reviews

Review

High praise for the intense vision of STEPHEN ROMANO and RESURRECTION EXPRESS:

"The pace never slackens in Romano's superior debut thriller....[A] complex, multilayered storyline. Few will anticipate the plot twists or the extremely satisfying resolution." —Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"Cinematic, hyperkinetic, action-packed!" —Jeff Abbott, New York Times bestselling author of The Last Minute

Compelling, devastating, and brutal, with battle-hardened prose and relentless energy, Stephen Romano has crafted one hell of a first novel. A juiced-up, whacked-out, back-to-the-wall book that reads like a ride through the Knife and Gun Club on the night of a full moon, riding the Resurrection Express will leave you dizzy from betrayal, speechless from reversals, and quite possibly battered and broken by its revelations.” —Greg Rucka, New York Times bestselling author of Alpha and creator of the Eisner Award–winning Queen & Country series

“Stephen Romano’s taut prose is as unrelentingly violent and brutal as the story he tells. Resurrection Express is a killer debut that demands attention. A scorching read.” —Brian Azzarello, New York Times bestselling author of Joker and creator of the Eisner Award–winning 100 Bullets series

“Stephen Romano’s imagination is so scary-brilliant, you should be required to obtain a controlled dangerous substance license before opening Resurrection Express.”—Duane Swierczynski, author of the Anthony, Barry, Macavity, and Shamus Award–nominated Charlie Hardie series

Resurrection Express whipsaws along at 100 mph, with so much momentum that the reader feels like if he hits one bump, he’ll go straight through the windshield.”—Tom Piccirilli, author of the International Thriller Writers’ Award–winning novel The Cold Spot

“A high-voltage blast! Stephen Romano’s action scenes are light-years ahead of the pack, fueled by muscular prose, terrifying villains, and Elroy Coffin—a protagonist for the ages. Resurrection Express is one of the finest examples I’ve encountered of noir’s evolution into the twenty-first century.”—Blake Crouch, acclaimed author of Run, Snowbound, and Abandon

Resurrection Express is a rip-snortin’ white-knuckle ride. . . . A page-turner that sinks its teeth into you and won’t let go. Stephen Romano has created a meal you will want to swallow whole—it’s that hard to put down. His damaged protagonist, Elroy Coffin, is a compelling computer freak with criminal skills who you can’t help but root for. A savage and vicious little tale that fans of Don Winslow will lap up. Highly recommended!”—Don Coscarelli, award-winning director of cult classics Phantasm, Bubba Ho-tep, and The Beastmaster

“Deceit, treachery, and betrayal are the names of the game….The action is fun and fast paced in this thriller romp!”

“Gripping…[a] complex multifaceted novel starring hard-ass people battling for lead dog position in what will be shortlisted as one of the top thrillers of the year.” (<!-- /* Font Definitions */ @font-face {font-family:Arial; panose-1:2 11 6 4 2 2 2 2 2 4; mso-font-c)

Unshakable suspense….Romano relies on sharp instincts and scary-smart strategy over chance to give his hero nine lives, and he layers in plenty of depth beyond expertly drawn tech-thriller aspects….A must read for followers of Andrew Vachss and Charlie Huston.” (BOOKLIST (starred review))

5.0 out of 5 stars Live To Read September 19, 2012
By Chels
Format:Hardcover
Looking for a true suspense novel? Resurrection Express will deliver a heart-pounding, action-packed story. The reader will open the first page to a fight scene and a graphic one at that. Elroy, the main character, will both shock and fascinate the reader. He holds nothing back and fully allows the reader into his mind. He acts as the reader's guide through an almost surreal plot.

Elroy ends up in a jail cell. He can't do anything that he loves: hacking, cracking codes, fighting, etc... His anger at his belief in the death of his wife is overwhelming. When he receives an unusual visitor with an unusual request, he has no idea of the journey he is about to embark on. Elroy accepts the deal his visitor offers, especially when he learns his wife might still be alive. However, when Elroy is released from prison to begin his part of the bargain, he finds that the characters he meets and the adversaries he is up against just might get the best of him.

Overall, Resurrection Express kept me up till the late hours of the night. This book was impossible to put down; the scenes seemd to fly by and the plot constantly changed. The reader will not want to miss one minute. Elroy's character is not particularly likable, yet this does not detract from the story at all. Instead, he fits the setting and plot perfectly. The other characters are not any more redeemable than Elroy; many of them seem purely evil, perfect for a suspense novel. Stephen Romano has a way of writing that can give the reader the chills. This book is recommended to adult readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting as a Runaway Rollercoaster! September 18, 2012
Format:Hardcover
Resurrection Express by Stephen Romano

Funny I thought I knew how to spell intense and turns out it is spelled ROMANO! Wow, this book brings a level of intensity that I expect from Vince Flynn or Daniel Silva, I just didn't know Romano was this good.

A hacker/thief and his father an assassin/thief are embroiled in a elitist conspiracy to rework the world.

If you are squeamish you won't want to read this book. It is graphic, very graphic but also captivating. The story is complex and you best pay attention or you will get lost. Some thought provoking questions arise from the plot of this book. There are also some not so subtle political digs included in the work. Don't look for any warm and fuzzy characters, they are all pretty much despicable. If you are looking for a rush from reading, grab this book, it will grab you and shake out your complacency.

I highly recommend the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok, but not great. Unnecessarily sanguinary December 26, 2012
Format:Hardcover
Glad others liked it as much as they did, but kind of "meh" for me. Protagonist has interesting background, but there are just bodies everywhere as the novel progresses. While I don't mind violence in a novel, eventually there are simply so many bodies littered everywhere throughout this story that my willingness to suspend my disbelief just evaporated. I respectfully think that the author could have written the same novel without leaving pretty much everyone in it dead.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fast Paced and Intense October 9, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I bought this book on a recommendation from author Blake Crouch. I was not disappointed. Very intense, three-dimensional characters, and a story that moves from the first page and never stops to look back. The book drifted a bit toward the end in directions I could not possibly comprehend, but I was willing to with it right up until the end. I can't wait to see more from this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars A thriller that thrilled me! September 24, 2012
Format:Hardcover
As you all know I am attempting to branch out of my YA only reading. And this one was AMAZING!!! I really love shows with this kind of thing like the Italian Job etc. And this book was AMAZING!!! You will want to pay attention to this book or you might get lost. Others have said it was a little graphic. But as I am a horror/supernatural fan. I think I'm numb to graphics like this. So be forewarned my graphic level and your might be a little different.

4.0 out of 5 stars Andrew Vachss fans will enjoy reading this book. October 17, 2012
Format:Hardcover
This is Romano's first novel that he's written on his own. He's previously written adaptations for TV, an illustrated work & was one of three co-authors of a novel. Anyone who is a fan of Andrew Vachss will enjoy reading this book. The writing is taut. The pace is fast. The crimes are gruesome. Lines between good and bad are blurred. All the heroes are anti-heroes. Readers will question who are really the good guys. What most impressed me about this novel was the amount of computer knowledge & technical expertise Romano must possess to write this book. Even if he had to research it all, I would not have even known where to look for all the information he's writing about. At times, this all seemed too much paranoid conspiracy theory; but Vachss sometimes veers in that direction, as well. Overlooking that bit of criticism, this is one heck of an exciting thriller! It would have been even better and more exciting with some judicious editing; but, sadly that is a problem many books written in the past decade seem to share. At 400+ pages it was exciting. At a well-edited 280-300 pages, it would have been grabbing you by the seat of your pants thrilling!

More About the Author

STEPHEN ROMANO is a best-selling author, screenwriter and multi-media artist. His novel RESURRECTION EXPRESS, a spectacularly-acclaimed thriller from Simon and Schuster, is now in development as a major motion picture from the producer of the billion dollar RUSH HOUR franchise. Stephen is also the co-author of BLACK LIGHT, a supernatural suspense novel from Little Brown and Company, on which he collaborated with top Hollywood screenwriters Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan of the legendary SAW horror movie series. Stephen is also the writer of INCIDENT ON AND OFF A MOUNTAIN ROAD for Showtime's Emmy Award-winning MASTERS OF HORROR cable series. Stephen's 2006 short story collection THE RIOT ACT garnered wide critical acclaim and his ground-breaking illustrated novel SHOCK FESTIVAL from IDW was similarly praised, receiving a BOOK OF THE YEAR award in 2008 from Rue Morgue Magazine. He is also an illustrator of film posters and a DVD/Blu-ray producer/commentator. His professionally commissioned e-novel for Amazon's Kindle World imprint, WAYWARD PINES: BEFORE THE FALL is currently a popular success.

Stephen's regular blog features parody cartoons, movie and book reviews and biographical confessionals. His favorite living author is William Kotzwinkle. HIGH PRAISE FOR THE INTENSE VISION OF STEPHEN ROMANO.

For THE RIOT ACT:

"(Stephen's stories) have that kind of magic where you take something wild and wooly, and tell it in such a way that you just can't doubt it. They make you feel, and they make you think, even if they are for the most part, disturbing. Fact is, THE RIOT ACT may be the best new short story collection I've read in years. Stephen Romano isn't fu**ing around."
---JOE LANSDALE, best-selling author of THE BOTTOMS and BUBBA HO-TEP

This is a guy with a vision, a real narrative style, a dark and mesmerizing worldview. It's as if Joe Lansdale, Dave Schow, John Skipp, and Norm Partridge all had a long, wild weekend in Vegas replete with moonshine, .45s, snakeskin boots, twleve kilos of uncut Colombian coke, Five Thai hookers, and the dug-up corpse of Jim Thompson, spent three days out of their minds, and woke up the following morning to find little baby Steve Romano in the middle of the hotel room gurgling, "Daddy! Daddy!" And yes, that really IS the only way to explain how solid his fiction is. Brutal, full-on street-cred, sharp, insightful, human, authentic, bloody, savage, asskicking, but smooth and altogether pure. Seriously, you've got to check him out."
---TOM PICCIRILLI, best-selling author of THE LAST KIND WORDS

Stephen Romano writes like he's on fire. And I don't mean with some funny notion like The Muse, or the Lord. No, he writes like someone just SET HIM ON FIRE . . . THE RIOT ACT is some of the most urgent, blistering, breathlessly paced, microscopically observed, mordantly hilarious, heartbreakingly hopeless, and utterly devastating bloodbath fiction ever burned into print."
---JOHN SKIPP, best selling author of THE SCREAM and JAKE'S WAKE

For RESURRECTION EXPRESS:

"Resurrection Express has the pacing, technical detail, and unshakable suspense to excite thriller fans, and even readers who typically retreat from the high-tech context will appreciate . . . A must read for followers of Andrew Vachss and Charlie Huston."
---BOOKLIST (Starred Review)

"The pace never slackens in screenwriter Romano's superior debut thriller . . . Extremely satisfying. Romano doesn't pull his punches."
---PUBLISHER'S WEEKLY (Starred Review)

"Resurrection Express moves like a bullet train on a twisting track. The result is a slick, satisfying thriller, in which the reader is constantly wondering, who is on whose side."
---MYSTERY SCENE MAGAZINE

"Romano plunges into a frenetic plot that doesn't slow down until the very last word, (investing) in sturdy characters who can make the non-stop action plausible."
---CHICAGO SUN-SENTINEL

"Compelling, devastating and brutal, with battle-hardened prose and relentless energy, Stephen Romano has crafted one hell of a first novel. A juiced-up, whacked-out, back-to-the-wall book that reads like a ride through the Knife and Gun Club on the night of a full moon, riding the Resurrection Express will leave you dizzy from betrayal, speechless from reversals, and quite possibly battered and broken by its revelations."

---BLAKE CROUCH, best-selling author of the WAYWARD PINES series

"RESURRECTION EXPRESS is a rip snortin' white knuckle ride. Highly recommended!!"
---DON COSCARELLI, director of Phantasm, The Beastmaster and Bubba-Ho-Tep

"RESURRECTION EXPRESS is a cinematic, hyperkinetic, action-packed thriller."
---JEFF ABBOTT, New York Times bestselling author of THE LAST MINUTE

"Stephen Romano's imagination is so scary-brilliant, you should be required to obtain a controlled dangerous substance license before opening RESURRECTION EXPRESS."
---DUANE SWIERCZYNSKI, New York Times bestselling author of Fun and Games.

Stephen Romano's taut prose is as unrelentingly violent and brutal as the story he tells. Resurrection Express is a killer debut that demands attention. A scorching read.
---BRIAN AZZARALLO, New York Times bestselling author of BATMAN: JOKER

"If I don't get any writing done this week, it's all Stephen Romano's fault. RESURRECTION EXPRESS is a great read!"
---JOHNNY SHAW, Anthony Award-winning author of Dove Season: A Jimmy Vedder Fiasco

"Horror scribe Stephen Romano makes his crime fiction debut in the sci-fi tinged thriller Resurrection Express . . . a compelling mystery that marks an auspicious crime fiction debut."
---CRIME FICTION LOVER.COM

"The book has the heightened freneticism of a drill-quick action film. It's long, over 400 pages, but the momentum keeps you always on edge."
---GRIFT magazine

"From noir to apocalyptic at the speed of sound! This book is relentless. It has the feel of a grind house auteur working with a two-hundred million dollar budget . . . you feel pummeled by the end of the novel. That said, RESURRECTION EXPRESS questions ideas of love and hope. Just don't expect any happy answers.

FOR SHOCK FESTIVAL:

BOOK OF THE MONTH, OCTOBER 2008! One of the greatest homage to B-cinema ever undertaken . . . SHOCK FESTIVAL is a breathtakingly thorough overview of over 100 movies and a slew of filmmaker and actors who never existed -- but which you'll believe actually did by the time you finish reading. And your eyes don't even have to touch the words to be convinced, thanks to the down-to-the-smallest-detail perfect collection of posters, newspaper ads, still photos and other visuals Romano and his art team have created.
---FANGORIA MAGAZINE

BEST FICTION BOOK OF 2008! While the term mockumentary practically wrote itself, it's going to take a clever writer to describe Stephen Romano's fictional alternate history of exploitation films . . . (Romano) has created a vivid universe filled with films you'd love to see and personalities you'd line up at a convention to meet, lavishly illustrated with a plethora of eye-popping posters, lobby cards, on-set still and ad mats for such ficional films as THE UNDERTAKER AND HIS WIFE and STARFIRE BEYOND THE GALAXY. Fans swept up in the recent wave of grindhouse nostalgia NEED to buy this book!
---RUE MORGUE MAGAZINE

"Romano's pseudo-journalistic accomplishment is a genuine revelation, an event that's rarely if ever been done before: the merging of fact and fiction into something too outrageous to be the truth and too disarmingly ghastly/gorgeous to be anything but.
---THE AUSTIN CHRONICLE

"Among the most impressive feats of sustained imagination I've encountered in quite some time, if not ever."
