4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Mix Of Goth And Death, February 20, 2004
This review is from: Resurrection (Audio CD)
I hadn't heard any of the earlier GODGORY works, so I was a bit skeptical when i decided to buy this CD. It was a worthy buy. I assure you. Believe It Or Not, This band has only two members: A drummer and a vocalist. All the additional music has been delivered by guest or session musicians and they have done a wonderful job. Acoustic and Heavy rhythms have been mixed to the point of perfection with a smooth finish. Standout tracks include "Resurrection" and "Adultery" (My personal favourite). Apart from atmospheric sounds, GODGORY also succeeds on creating heavy, rip-roaring death metal music like "Crimson Snow" with twisted lyrics. No matter what you hear about this CD, If you like nice, slow, acoustic music and also heavy, goth-death, then this CD is definately for you. I assure you, you won't be disappointed. I would give it 4-1/2 Stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dark, brooding & HEAVY!, September 30, 2000
This review is from: Resurrection (Audio CD)
Without having heard earlier GODGORY material I can't comment much on comparisons to prior releases but this album alone is reason enough for me as well as anyone who likes their music heavy and weighted down with emotion to go forth and seek out anything else this band has done. It is interesting to note that as of this album's release, GODGORY had been reduced to a two-man band. Former musicians had parted ways for various reasons and pressed to record this album, the remaining members (who write all the music) recruited their former counterparts to act as session musicians. Its clear that the talent level of this Swedish outfit is at the higher echelons of the genre. And let's talk about genres for a moment because GODGORY are a rather unorthodox entity. Its hard to call them solely a Death Metal band, although at the core of it all, they are in fact this first and foremost. However, there is much in the way of Gothic influence throughout which really makes this interesting and highly enjoyable. Of primary mention is the ravenous guitar sound; diabolically sharp and resounding with serrated heaviness - just the kind of stuff I live for! Of special note is the searing lead work which is as good as any I've heard on the Swedish scene, including the deified Amott brothers. An exemplary production only adds to the full weight of the album which bubbles with spacey and emotive passages but jerking you out of your complacency with some hefty Death Metal crushers. I'm reminded of a sort of early ENTOMBED meets TYPE-O NEGATIVE fusion. One track in particular seizes on the latter's style to the hilt but GODGORY never stray far from their rudimentary foundation - Death Metal.

I really enjoyed Resurrection and guess you will too, especially if you enjoyed that early Swedish sound with some modern elements thrown in. Seek this and revel if you know what's good for you!

Those guys have a very unique sound. Something is take from Gothenburg, other's from Norwegian black, and some old school Death. Their sharp guitar sound really stands out. Very atmospheric, perfect to listen in a bad weather, rain, strong wind, fog.

Godgory effectively sets the standard for gothic death metal...exceptionally well-produced, skillfully played, very intelligent and ultimately sorrowful and inspiring. Fans of this style really need to hear this album...

4.5 stars. I saw this on a Listmania list and my interest was piqued: "Symphonic Death Metal?" A lot of this album is more straight Heavy Metal mixed with gothic textures and guttural vocal inflections. Songs can be brutally heavy one moment then shift into gorgeous piano and acoustic guitar passages without ever losing momentum. Remarkable, considering that most Death Metal acts go for visceral brutality alone rather than for emotional connections with the listener. There are times on this album when I am reminded a little of My Dying Bride, others when they sound more like "Crimson"-era Edge of Sanity; maybe even a touch of early Paradise Lost. Overall, Nuclear Blast has found another solid outfit with talent, brains, and for what it's worth, some excellent guitar solos. Highly recommended.
