Book Description

May 10, 2010
This is not another book on what view to hold about the reality of Jesus’ return but it is about how to live in the light of his imminent return. Don Carson accurately determines that the Christian church has always lived in what the bible terms ‘the last days’…the period between his ascension to his Father in heaven and his return on the clouds of heaven.

Based on Paul’s teaching in 2 Timothy 3, Don Carson gives wise council to the today’s church to avoid false teaching and to seek good mentors, those who will lead us in truth. He shows that to rely on worldly wisdom is folly that the world is utterly sinful, but rather to cling to the Bible as the source of our council and guidance and help. But more than that he shows us that it is in holding the Bible out to a needy world we take its message to where it is needed the most.

To live in the last days is not to hang on in quiet desperation but to boldly take the word of God and apply it to every situation knowing that it will meet every need just as it has throughout the two millennia since Jesus promised to return again. That is how to live in the last days!

4.0 out of 5 stars Faithfulness in the last days, March 14, 2011
This review is from: From The Resurrection to His Return: Living Faithfully in the last days (Mass Market Paperback)
Don Carson, research professor of NT at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School has written a timely and well thought out presentation on 2 Timothy 3:1-4:8. This little book is a gem because it provides the reader with a grasp of the last days in light of what it means to be faithful. Carson says concerning 2 Timothy 3:2-5 that, "The antitheses of loving God is worse than not loving God: it is loving something else supremely, most commonly ouselves or things that we covet" (13). In effect, when we disregard the needs and concerns of our neighbor, then we do not love God either, and when we seek to worship false idols (money, power, pleasure, etc.) the most, we are not loving God nor our neighbor.

Carson goes to outline important points made from 2 Timothy concerning having the right mentors, holding the Scripture in high authority and living faithfully in a perverse culture. This little book gives the reader both an understanding of the terminology of the text and it meaning, but also practical applications of the text. One of the applications that I thought was helpful was Carson's insistence that the right kind of mentors we need are not those who just tell us what we want to hear, but are full of maturity of faith with love and joy at their side (32-33). Overall, this little book is a good dive into the 2 Timothy 3-4 with an eye towards the moral, spiritual, and ethical applications of the text.

With so much nonsense out there about the end times etc this book remind us of our calling in the last days. To witnes Christ, not to become caught up in endless debates about when the Lord will come. Instead it calls us to live each day in service to the Lord, and to joyful await His coming.
