Kagen's talent shines in this wholly original and richly imagined story where heartbreak is softened with humor and a touch of magic.
Her newest novel is about a woman who receives terrible news and sets out to try to make right the things in her life that are wrong. Her marriage is not the same, her daughter is going through some hard times, her son rarely speaks and her sister, well, her sister is a whole different story. When an unexpected friend enters her life, she is able to set forth with her check list and an unyielding determination that is both moving and heartbreaking. With the most emotionally brilliant story to date Tess takes you on a journey that touches on family dynamics, illness, and the strength that comes from having a friend by your side. Never predictable, with a story that you want to both savor and devour, The Resurrection of Tess Blessing is a book that will resonate with you long after you finish reading. 5 stars and a book club MUST read!!!
Forty-Nine year old Tess has just been diagnosed with breast cancer. She's convinced she's going to die but before she does, she has a to-do list that needs done. On that list, helping her daughter who suffers from an eating disorder; helping her son to find his way in life; reuniting with her estranged sister (who has a myriad of issues of her own); and rekindling her marriage with her husband whom she is convinced is having a fling with one of the waitresses at the restaurant that the Blessing family owns. Not to mention stopping to buy broccoli.
With all of these very serious issues going on within the family (breast cancer, eating disorder, gambling, infidelity, and post-traumatic stress disorder) it is no wonder that Tess needs Grace in her life right now. Who's Grace? Grace, who by appearance is a splitting image of Calpurnia, a character from Tess's favorite book, TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, a book that she carries with her in her lucky purse everywhere she goes, is Tess's imaginary friend.
We are given Tess's story from her sad and tumultuous childhood through her late teens and then adult years by narrator Grace who has always been a part of Tess's life~~whether real or imagined. Grace is an incredible teller of this story. Her character brings humor when we need it and she brings a certain, well, grace to the story when we're being taught a lesson or two. And oh yes, there are lessons to be learned in this wonderful book.Read more ›
