Not the Ellen Burstyn Movie,
By A Customer
This review is from: Resurrection (DVD)
To answer the other reviewer's question, this is not the Ellen Burstyn, Sam Shepard version. At least not based on the date. This one has a date of 1988. The Ellen Burstyn version of this fine file was released in 1980.Keep looking...the movie is worth it! Shame on Amazon for not putting enough information on this film. If you have them in stock you should at least be able to describe them to your customers.

First of all, thanks to all who warned me in advance. I too was looking for the Ellen Burstyn & Sam Sherpard Classic. The nerve of another film having the same title. The Ellen Burstyn one is Superb in every way. Amazon get with and offer it to your hungry & discriminating customers!!!!This is very misleading & vague. Thanks to all who wised me up with the original release date.

An edgey look at the Resurrection,
By
This review is from: Resurrection [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Easter videos usually feature lots of pastel flowers, delicate sunrises and everyone standing around looking Apostolic. This is not one of those videos: everything is sun-baked with not a flower in sight and the sweaty faces are registering anger, pain, fear and hatred as much as spiritual epiphany. Based on a short story by Max Lucado. This is the Bible by way of John Frankenheimer rather than de Mille.A Roman solider, new to the occupation of Judea, unexpectedly pulls duty guarding Christ's crucifixion and later His tomb Saturday night. He is having nightmares about both, and he is not quite sure what he remembers about that fateful night. He is determined to find out, despite opposition from both the Roman legion and the Jewish collaborators. The answers he finds will change his life. The video runs about an hour. It is not a kiddy video or a straightfoward depiction of the gospel story. This is a drama told by one of the protagonists on the "edge" of the story. There is some violence. Menace and torture are implied (other than the crucifixion, which is dealt with in brief, graphic flashbacks). Although a complete work of fiction. I think it depicts well the highly charged atmosphere of Jerusalem in the days following the Resurrection. It credibly shows an experience that at least some early disciples of Christ would recognize, and offers one explanation for why the Gospels know about the events Saturday at the tomb. If the movie has any faults it is not always clear in showing why some of the chracters are doing what they are doing. I don't know whether to blame the script or the acting. This is not existential like "Barrabas;" blasphemous like "The Last Temptation of Christ," or conventional like "The Greatest Story Ever Told." It more like "Ben-Hur" with psychological insight.

My teenagers were glued in!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Resurrection [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I showed this video to the youth group where I served as youth minister. They were glued in. Unlike other Bible Story videos that have low budgets, and cheesy actors--this one was very well done. Very good acting, and high quality. I enjoyed the story very much myself.
