Older than Dust, but Heavier than ever!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Resurrection (Audio CD)
I let a bandmate of mine (an old school Venom fan)check out this album, not sure what he would think, since this is a departure from the traditional Venom sound. He was completely and totally blown away. We both agreed that Resurrection is by far the best Venom album. The production is awesome, packed with thick potent guitar riffs and powerful vocal arrangements. It strays away from the stark rawness typical of earlier material, but make no mistake, this more sophisticated sound is every bit as brutal. Some things get better with age. Highly recommended.

My expectations were pretty low before listening to this album. Everything else I'd heard from these guys since 1985 has left me disappointed. I figured that, now in their forties, they've probably run out of good music ideas and are doing whatever they can to follow popular trends and just make a buck. Even if someone were to tell me that this is the best album they've made in seventeen years and possibly their best ever I still wouldn't have expected much. Boy was I wrong. The entire album (all fourteen songs) just blew me away. I could not believe what I was hearing. I've always felt Mantas has been one of the most underrated guitar players ever. On this album he's even better than I could have wished. Every song has bad-ass riff after bad-ass riff. It's been a long time since I've heard so many on one album. The guitar solos are vintage Mantas (I only wish there could have been more of them). I couldn't imagine Cronos sounding any better. His tone of voice is perfect throughout (I like how he pronounces his "r"s). The smart-ass insults, threats and sarcasm are quite funny. Antton's drumming is phenomenal, too (He pounds the s*** out of them). It's also one of the best produced albums I've ever heard (the louder it is the better it sounds). Aside from a few lyrics I don't care too much for (it's easy for me to ignore that when there's so much else going on) this album is a flawless masterpiece. One of the best metal albums I've ever heard. Highly recommended.

Venom finally gets good production values!,

I always wanted to try out Venom because these guys inspired so many groups, such as Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer. If you look at old pictures of these groups, they are almost always wearing Venom shirts. I tried out some of Venom's earlier stuff but the production was just so bad! There first albums are horendously produced and mixed. It just resulted in me losing interest in them. Then I noticed Resurrection, there newest (and probably final) album. I was actually blown away with its awsome production. The guitars sound amazing and the vocals are crisp and clear. It sounds SOO much better than their original albums. Though I'm not real big on a lot of their lyrics, I just love his voice and killer riff after killer riff. With the guitars and vocals being so good, you can get past the lyrics (unless you dig that sort of thing). Very impressive album from the original trio.

Lay down your souls to the Gods of Rock-n-Roll!,

Good old fashioned thrash metal with some ambient touches here and there combined with the pleasingly familiar vocals of Cronos and the somewhat hokey lyrics we all know and love make this a must-have for old-school and new metal fans alike. This is one of THE best metal albums released in 2000!

Mind-blowing!,

The drum and guitar riffs are simply awesome throughout the CD. The pick of the songs (IMO) is 'Disbeliever'.Myself, also an avid AC/DC fan, considered 'Stiff Upper Lip' as one of their finest albums. Venom's latest offering, goes close to blowing 'Stiff Upper Lip' out of the water. I have heard many of Venom's previous albums, and I consider this album to be their finest. You will definately not be disappointed with this album.

Venom's (black) magic,

Let me say first that this is the finest production sound-wise that Venom has ever had in their career. The distorted Bass and guitar sound literally metallic and hit like cannons. Many of the songs are memorable because of the awsome (albiet generic) riffs. Nothing in this album is uncontrolled, which is strange....For Venom. I give it a five because it is Venom, and even though it's nothing like the classic sonic chaos that Venom made a name for themselves with, it is still a powerful piece of work.

BETTER THAN EVER!,

This is ONE great cd. Anatton's drum playing really adds to the sound of Venom. Cronos is at top form(the devil never sounded better!). Mantas sets fire to his fret board. The whole cd fits together for some damn fine music. Buy this--you will not be sorry you did!

This isn't a technical review by any means. Just got the Resurrection CD. If you like straight ahead killer riffs, dark menacing, downright evil lyrics and vocals and awesome pounding bass this CD has it all! Powerful sound from just 3 musicians!

Venom at it's best!,
By Valeck Bathory (New York City,NY USA) - See all my reviews

This Venom at there best.Cast In Stone was great and Resurrection is an album that bagsa heads and raises the dead from the bottomless grave...You have songs that are heavier than your normal Venom heavy and songs that are very melodious.Crono's voices has gotten to it prime and Mantas' guitar playing has never been better.Songs like "Resurrection","All There Is Fear" and "FireLight" and "Vengence is Mine" are probably venom greatest opus and other songs like "War On Christ" and the "Black Flames Of Satan" hark back to Venom's earlier days...If there is any Venom albums you might think of purchasing,it is this one.The production value is great. They finally get the right sound they always had with the right producer. This album is ment for real heavy metal fans, not possers.Get this if your into real "Heavy Metal/Black Metal/Speed Metal"......
