Book Description

There is life on other planets. They invaded ours. Pillaging Earth for a decade. Then they vanished without explanation.

THE END WAS ONLY THE BEGINNING...

The science fiction saga that explores the aftermath of Earth's most brutal conflict starts here! For ten years the alien invaders have laid waste to our planet, but now they've vanished, leaving the surviviors with two questions--"Where did the 'bugs' go?" and "Where does humanity go from here?"

It's big existential questions, edge-of-your-seat alien-fueled intrigue, and epic thrills in this collection of the original seven installments of Resurrection! (Includes issues 1-6, plus the 2008 Annual.)

Resurrection: The Insurgent Edition collects all of the black-and-white Resurrection material in conjunction with the launch of the new full color ongoing series that's now in development as a major motion picture with Universal Studios. Created by noted writer and producer Marc Guggenheim (TV's Eli Stone, Marvel's Amazing Spider-Man) and featuring moody art from newcomers David Dumeer and Douglas Dabbs, this book picks up where all the other alien invasion stories end.

"Remember the very first alien invasion pic you saw? Me too. Remember wondering what happened after all the aliens left? Me either. Luckily, Marc Guggenheim did. Real fun and real emotion to get your sci-fi going."
-Brad Meltzer, best selling author of The Book of Lies and Justice League

"An eerily relevant twist on the alien invasion genre, Resurrection asks what happens to society after all the institutions we once relied on are torn asunder.  A very cool story, beautifully drawn.  Worth your attention."
- Brian K. Vaughan, co-creator of Y: The Last Man & Ex Machina

More About the Author

A native of Long Island, New York, Marc practiced law at one of Boston's most prestigious firms for over four years before leaving to pursue his dream of writing professionally. That legal experience led to a staff position on David E. Kelley's Emmy-winning show about Boston attorneys, "The Practice." That same year, he sold his screenplay, "Musical Chairs," to Sid Sheinberg's The Bubble Factory.

These opportunities led to an invitation to join the writing staff of "Law & Order," where he wrote for three seasons before moving on to the critically-acclaimed series "Jack & Bobby," and later, the ratings juggernaut "CSI: Miami." It was "Jack & Bobby" that introduced Marc to Greg Berlanti and the two resolved to create a show together, a pact which led to the development of Eli Stone, for which they received a Writers Guild Award nomination for Best Drama Teleplay.

That year, Marc added comic books and videogames to his growing body of work. His first published comic book was a two-issue story for DC's "Aquaman," which he parlayed into two critically-acclaimed runs on Marvel Comics' premier super-hero, Wolverine. In November 2007, Marc launched his first creator-owned series with Oni Press, entitled Resurrection, which has been optioned as a feature film by Universal Pictures.

Marc's other comic book credits include Amazing Spider-Man, Young X-Men, Supreme Power, Superman/Batman, The Flash, Blade, Super Zombies and Galactica 1980.

His videogame work includes: "Call of Duty 3," "Perfect Dark Zero," and "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," which was nominated for a WGA Award for Best Writing.

But Marc hasn't left television. While writing and producing the Eli pilot, Greg pulled Marc in to help him produce the first season of "Brothers & Sisters," which has become a Top-20 hit for ABC, where he now has a development deal.

Marc continues to collaborate with Greg as a co-writer on the feature film version of "Green Lantern" to be directed by Martin Campbell for Warner Bros.

Marc currently lives in Los Angeles with his wife Tara (a fellow TV writer and WGA nominee, who is co-creator of the CW dramedy Reaper), their daughters, and their cat Rocky.

Marc's personal website is www.legalscribe.net.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Invasion May Be Over, But Mankind's Troubles Have Just Begun....., May 24, 2009
By
Daniel V. Reilly (Upstate New York, United States) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Resurrection, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
RESURRECTION takes the standard "Alien Invasion" story we're all so familiar with, and turns it on it's head: What happens AFTER the Invasion? When the Invaders mysteriously disappear, and Humanity can safely emerge from it's hiding places, how will we exist without laws and civilization and leadership?

The series seems to take it's cues from Robert Kirkman's THE WALKING DEAD series, right down to the look of the artwork. We follow a few different groups of survivors, whose paths eventually cross, learn a few bits and pieces of information about the Aliens ("Bugs") and the Invasion, and get a few tantalizing glimpses of the post-Invasion world, but ultimately the books crawls along at a glacial pace....Some of the characters are connected in ways that are never made clear, we leave the book knowing far too little about the Bugs, and are left with more questions then there were when we started.....Granted, these questions will all be addressed within the pages of the upcoming RESURRECTION series, but Author Marc Guggenheim really didn't make me care enough about any of the questions to want to come back to this world again. The art is decent enough, but there's a kind of sameness to the faces that often makes it hard to tell who is who.

184 pages for six dollars is a steal, and I applaud Oni Press for making this book so accessible and wallet-friendly. RESURRECTION: THE INSURGENT EDITION has some great moments, and at this price, it's not going to require you to break the bank, so pick up a copy and decide for yourself.

3.0 out of 5 stars I Am Compelled Enough to Want to See Where This is All Going, June 23, 2010
This review is from: Resurrection, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
Countless authors have attempted to illustrate what would happen after the world is wracked with an apocalypse of some sort, or the life that we know undergoes a radical shift of paradigms and conveniences. I'm a big fan of the easiest comparisons here, those being Y : The Last Man and The Walking Dead (and a little bit of Vonnegut), so I'm always interested to see a new interpretation of how we're all going to slowly waste away when the chips are down. I have read The Zombie Survival Guide, after all.

The title of the collection doesn't refer to any kind of zombie happenings, even if the toothy monster on the cover implies otherwise. The idea of "resurrection" refers to the slow rebirth of humanity after a period of 10 years in which alien destruction and experimentation have ravaged the landscape and population of Earth. However, through the course of this collection (which covers the first six issues of the series, and a bonus Annual issue), humanity seems to be more concerned with shooting each other than doing anything noble or grand.

While the beginning of the book makes a strong showing for an emotional tale of the lone survivors trying to make sense of everything, it quickly degrades into a mess of incomprehensible politics that are very likely (and inconveniently) explained by events that happen after this collection ends.

I like this book, but not because it feels exceptionally compelling. The art is very awkward and inconsistent, and it's hard to care about any given character, if you can even tell them apart visually. I do, however, feel that this is worth reading because it's very obviously going somewhere very, very interesting--which is only revealed in the very last page of the collection's main story. The Annual issue, which is also included here, runs on a tangent to the main plot but is exceptionally more interesting.

It's also worth noting that this series has undergone an official reboot since the events of these issues, so while these set a foundation for something, later collections may prove to be a more solid addition to your collection also.

There's a lot of guns and a lot of blood, a few heads crushed with large rocks, as well as profanity, which is selectively @#*&^-ed out.

Ultimately, I am compelled enough to want to see where this is all going. I want to see if humanity digs itself out of their own selfish squabbles to really create a new society, or if the aliens decide to come back, or what they were doing there in the first place. It's a premise with a ton of potential that I hope the creative team can live up to.
