5.0 out of 5 stars great buy
You can"t go wrong with this burner at this price. It was easy to set up and the burning software that came with it is excellent. You get a free update for the nero software from 4.0 to 5.5 and it is windows xp compatible. Had trouble with roxio cd burning software in xp and nero has got me back burning and ripping cd's at amazing speeds. Faceplate color is cream...

2.0 out of 5 stars Cheap cdrw means cheap quality

I had a terrible time getting this to work on my Windows2000 computer. I had an old 2x CDRW with Adaptec DirectCD installed. After uninstalling Adaptec (as required to use Nero), and then reinstalling Nero, Windows2000 could no longer read
any CD-ROM or CD-RW devices any more due to a ASPI layer problem. I checked USENET newgroups and found that tons of people have this problem. So as a reminder, Windows2000and Adaptec DirectCD are NOT supported by this drive.
I have to reinstall Windows2000 again to get my CD-ROM to work again. In a word, "LOT'S OF PAIN". The support from their website (...) is a joke to say the least.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Drive ----> Aopen CDRW 2440 oem, November 28, 2001

This review is from: Retail Plus 24x10x40 CDRW Drive (Personal Computers)
When I first got this drive, I just feel that is really similar with my Aopen 20X CDRW, And then I go to Aopen homepage, and found that the item # is almost identical with this Drive. So, I download a Aopen 2440 Firmware and update that Drive, Now it can show up Aopen 2440 Drive successfully (even updated to ver.2.0 firmware) and working with all the software: CloneCD, Nero, Adaptec, everything, and the Qualiry is excellent. This Drive actually is same as the Aopen's Manufactory.

1.0 out of 5 stars too bad there isn't a choice for '0' stars..., December 5, 2001

(...) This product is junk and so is the documentation. I gave this to my brother as a gift. I just returned it along with a long letter to the company. I have a good understanding of computers and after 5 hours of torture trying to get it to work, I gave up.
The manual is obviously written by someone with 3rd grade writing skills. It also assumes the reader has been installing drivers for the last 3 years in a shop somewhere. I can't imagine how novices would get this drive installed. Finally, you know the product's bad when a yellow piece of paper insert says, 'check with us before you return this product...' I called the number and received a recording that was not helpful and left a message that was never returned. I'll try another brand.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cool, September 26, 2001
This review is from: Retail Plus 24x10x40 CDRW Drive (Personal Computers)
Its a very good writer, I had an old writer and it could only write at about 6x or slower, any faster, it would miss data. And that was a 20x burner. This one can run full speed!

2.0 out of 5 stars Bittersweat in NY, December 11, 2001
This review is from: Retail Plus 24x10x40 CDRW Drive (Personal Computers)
I was very excited to get the burner i mean hey i went from a 4X to a 24X but you have to know plenty about computers to get this thing going sometimes. They always say its an easy installation.. I got news for them perfect installations are in there dream land. Once i got the thing working it works all right. but if you aren't very good with computers go with a name brand its worth the extra bux. PS there is a TOLL FREE TECHNICAL SUPPORT FOR THIS BURNER THOUGH. I called it once i got through i had to listen to faqs for 5 minutes and the tech support guy didn't speak good english but its better then nothing...ok its really not.. the number just in case anyone really needs it is 18008830206

5.0 out of 5 stars SUPER FAST!, December 10, 2001

I was a bit hesitant to purchase this item at first due to lack of a brand name...but I could not resist the price, and gave in.
I am so glad that I did...This drive is unbelievably fast and reliable. What used to take me hours to burn takes just minutes now with this 24x10x40x drive! This product also comes with NERO BURNING ROM software which is a big plus...it is the best cd burning software I have ever used (and I have used many different ones).
I am not that technical, but it was easy to install this drive in place of a very slow HP cd writer...and although it does not list Windows XP, I have had no problems running it with XP Professional....
I highly recommend this item!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good drive for the price, January 24, 2002

This review is from: Retail Plus 24x10x40 CDRW Drive (Personal Computers)
Just installed this drive this afternoon. Install went perfect with no problems whatsoever. I am running Windows XP Professional and the OS detected the drive immediatly upon rebooting. So far after burning three CD's I can say I am very impressed. I went from a Iomega 4x external USB drive to this 24x and it is a night and day difference. This drive works very well so far with Adaptec CD Creator Platinum 5 with the required updates for Windows XP.

The only minor problem I had was the CD tray would not open after burning an ISO file. I think what may have caused it was when the burning was complete the CD started to spin and the OS menu from the CD I just burned came onscreen along with the XP dialog box asking what I wanted to do with the CD reference open it in Media Player, etc. Nothing major though. I rebooted the PC and it was fine. I burned two other CD's after that and everything went perfect.

I don't really see why all the mixed reviews. It seems apparent from most of the negetive reviews that the people installing the drive was inexperienced and didn't know exactly what they were doing. I agree that the documentation that comes with the drive isn't to well written for beginners but an IDE device is an IDE device. They all install the same except for their positon of master or slave on primary or secondary IDE controller.

If you are looking for a fast, quality cheap drive then this would be a good choice. I believe the drive is made by mitsumi since that is the name on the back of the drive and Mitsumi has a drive identical to this one on their website.

Hope this helps.

I have *never* installed anything so I was a bit hesitant to get any internal burner. It did take me a while to hook it up but none of the fault lies with the unit or the tech help. My components were spaced weird in the case and getting the cable to fit was my biggest problem. Ended up hooking my HD to the CD ROM on primary IDE and the CD RW to the Floppy/Imation & that worked. Ended up fighting with NERO software though, upgraded and then it would not copy a CD. Ended up playing with original CD rom and I am happily in business. For a "no name" unit, I am happy with the way it works and the cost I got it for.
