Stores and restaurants are facing challenges that go well beyond dealing with competitors. Catalogues, Web sites, and e-commerce are making the world smaller and consumers more sophisticated. (It is estimated that on-line shopping will reach $1 trillion by 2005). Built environments must be compelling; combining product, value, and experience to keep customers coming through their doors to spend their time- and money. And with a growing global economy and culture, retail and restaurant interiors require distinctive yet universally understood identities.
The projects showcased in this book are meant to be more than just "eye candy" for the coffee table. They represent benchmarks for innovative, imaginative, and, in many cases, daring design. The intent in compiling this showcase of Retail and Restaurants is to present as broad a range of projects as possible-from the serene to the interactive, the traditional to the exotic; from multinational retailers to unique specialty boutiques, and from five-star gourmet restaurants to funky coffee bars.
There is a bit of irony in the book: I have a near-phobia when it comes to shopping that goes back to my teens, and I seldom eat out. But my greatest professional satisfaction over the past ten years has come from writing about remarkable retail and restaurant environments. And, luckily, I have no fear of asking questions at a construction site: What is it going to be? Who owns it? And who's designing it? That approach has allowed me to meet-and often befriend-the many gifted designers, their clients, and the photographers who make these pages so beautiful.
