Great Solo debut,
By
This review is from: Retaliation Revenge & Get Back (Audio CD)
Daz Dillinger releases a great solo debut album from Death Row and released after all his homeboys left the label (the album was finished for a while before it finally got released). With great production (he handled 12 of the songs himself and Soopafly did 3) and packed with great guest appearances, mostly from his LBC homies but a few other big names in the west get on here as well (only one song doesn't have any guests and it's the worst one on here) he delivers a great 15 song album. There is not one song on here that I skip and it has 3 classic songs and a bunch of great ones on here. A must have album for all rap fans.
#1 - 10 (classic f/ Kurupt, Technice, Bad Azz, Tray Dee, Soopafly - has a 2 minute intro before the song starts - great beat) #2 - 8.5 (f' Kurupt, KV, Prince ital joe (r.i.p.) #3 - 9.5 (f/ B-Legit -- great beat) #4 - 10 (f/ Too $hort - classic dirty song) #5 - 8 (f/ Kurupt, Prince ital joe (r.i.p.)) #6 - 10 (great beat - f/ Val Young - about living in Cali) #7 - 9 (f/ 2Pac (R.I.P.), Edi Amin, Kurupt, Kastro, Hussein Fatal) #8 - 8.5 (f/ tray deee, j-money) #9 - 7 #10 - 9 (f/ snoop dogg & Nate Dogg (uses same verse he uses from one of his songs on his 1998 album) #11 - 9.5 (f/ c-style - about paying child support) #12 - 7.5 (f/ val young - relaxing song) #13 - 8 (f/ WC) #14 - 9.5 (f/ bad azz & mc eiht) #15 - 8.5 (positive song -- f/ tray deee, bad azz, soopafly) Delmar Arnaud -- b. 5/25/73 -- Long Beach, CA DPG!!!! check all my reviews

Definite favorite of mine; Daz's classic solo debut.,

Daz Dillinger, the famous producer who made his name helping out with the likes of Dr. Dre, his cousin Snoop Doggy Dogg, and Kurupt, certainly delivers the goods with Retaliation, Revenge and Get Back. The album features jazzy, lively tracks that always seem to motivate and inspire. There are guest appearances on almost every single track, but instead of outshining Daz, they seem to complement him and make the album an even better treat. It also doesn't hurt that Daz is an amazing rapper himself. I would have to say that he is the best producer out there right now. Another great thing is that he picks great guests for the album. I'm talking about Kurupt, Snoop Doggy Dogg, Tupac Shakur(R.I.P.), Tha Outlawz, Val "Lady 'V'" Young, Bad Azz, Tray D, Nate Dogg, WC from Westside Connection, MC Eiht, and many, many more. The best thing about this album is that it has a lot to say. All of it shows lots of quality, time and effort were put into this album. All the tracks are really excellent, but the best track is by far "Only For You". It is a beautiful song with a great beat and great vocals from Val Young that almost remind me of Roberta Flack. Yet the best part of the song is when Daz tells the heart warming tale of how he meets a woman who is not a trick or a tramp and he falls in love with her. Another great track is "It Might Sound Crazy", which features Too Short. It is one of the better songs I've heard this year. The beat is great and Daz Dillinger and Too Short are a memorable duo. Other highlights include the prophetic "Thank God For My Life", which features a few guests, "Our Daily Bread", a great track with a cool beat, not to mention guest appearances from Kurupt and a little speech from Prince Ital Joe, "Initiated", an amazing song that features Tupac Shakur, Tha Outlawz and Kurupt, the classic "O.G.", where Daz raps with Nate Dogg and Snoop Doggy Dogg for a catchy and laid back trip on memory lane, the original "Playa Partners", a duet with B-Legit, "In California", a tribute to the sunshine state, "Baby Mama Drama", a song about how Daz's ex-girl is filing child support to get his money and support her and her current boyfriend, and "Gang Bangin' Ass Criminal", a touchy title indeed, but is a great track where Daz joins Kurupt, Priest "Soopafly" Brooks, Tray D, Bad Azz, and Technique for a gently bouncing track that sounds sort of like Miles Davis's "Spanish Key". To conclude my review, I would definitely recommend this album to any rap fan, especially if you like the DPGs. Daz Dillinger is a truly talented rapper and producer and he really put this album together well. Another thing that really impressed me about this album is that not a single track out of this whole album is sampled, and instead, like on all of his produced cuts, he used real live instruments like keyboards, basses, guitars, and even the occaisional acoustic piano. I have to say it's one of the best albums of the year after Kurupt's Kuruption.

This album from DAZ is bangin! West Coast Music at its best. The production( handled by Daz) is nearly flawless and there isnt a single song that isnt good. He is truly a talent behind the boards. He brings along some of his west coast buddies to help him out like his patna Kurupt, cousin Snoop, Nate Dogg, Tray Dee, Bad Azz, Technique, B-Legit, Too Short, 2Pac and The Outlawz, Big Pimpin, WC, and Mc Eiht. As a matter of fact all except one song has a guest appearance makin this feel like more of a compilation album of his tracks with other mcs rapping. But Daz does hold his own lyrically though. In California has sorta old school feel to it but it is still good. Initiated feat. 2Pac and the Outlawz is a good song but it couldve been better. I think a different beat wouldve made this song a hit. But hte Lyrics are on point. The best songs are playa partners, O.G., Oh No, Our Daily Bread, Initiated, The Ultimate Come Up. This album is not an instant satisfaction though. You have to listen to it more than one time and it will grow on you. and soon youll be addicted. A Great Album.

Dat Nigga Daz is Back!!,
This review is from: Retaliation Revenge & Get Back (Audio CD)
SUPERB... Stylish and concrete A terrific album here in Retaliation, Revenge and Get Back. I bought the CD on release date back in 1998.... why am I just now writing about it? I still bust out this album and listen to it to this day! One has to question why Daz would attempt this album. You're the only star remaining on Death Row Records for the time. You're the head of the label operations. No Limit is stealing the show! There's clearly no hope for a West Coast attempt..... That's what's so impressive about this album. A strong delivery from Daz Dillinger, whom still pulls out the grey and blue theme- with or without a Dogg Pound label on the album. Kurupt's presense is heavily felt through out and even opens the album. 1. INTRO- Mean, rough production bonds the likes of Kurupt and Tray Dee to present the toughness of The Gang. 3. PLAYA PARTNA- A great track here as B-Legit sprays some slanguage in with a nice Bass guitar rythme. 4. IT MIGHT SOUND CRAZY- Excellent production, cavi and soulful. Appropriately features Too $hort to add Pimpish flavor amongst a "player" track. 5. OUR DAILY BREED- Sequel to track from "Dogg Food" album. Added beats keep this in the winning category as delivery is even stronger in some parts by The Dogg Pound. 6. IN CALIFORNIA- Upbeat, aggressive and street friendly! Lady V adds immensely to the chorus! A stand out single and props to Soopafly on the nice beat here! 7. INITIATED- Album highlight here!! 2pac is featured along with The Outlawz.... A stout performance by all and a smooth line of production here. Nothing animated but bold. 10. O.G.- Excellent tune with Death Row originals Snoop & Nate Dogg. Song easily has "Chronic" days production! Fluent in street issues and drama. Nate steels the show! 13. RIDIN HIGH- W.C. is the partner in crime here. Great casting for the two as the deliver is strong! Jumpin beat with funky, jazzin piano beats that hyber this tune up. Just to name the stand outs here, the remaining tracks are achieving as well in their own individual ways. Very impressive release for "Retaliation, Revenge and Get Back" as it debuted at number 9 on the Billboards and peaked the West back in for a while. Stands out in any collection as this album covers so many issues and brings out the Westcoast talent at the same time. Dominating on all aspects. Each song destinctive and critical to the overall aspect. Death Row's Last real winner... This is clearly Daz Dillinger's best effort to date. Perhaps every now and again it wouldn't hurt for Daz to go back and listen to it as his latest projects are for label income only. Hopefully the new DPGC reunion album with have as strong of a delivery as this production!!

A Definition Of Great West Coast Rap Music...,
This review is from: Retaliation Revenge & Get Back (Audio CD)
Although the album was shelved for a while, its release was welcomed yet in the long run overlooked. Daz Dillinger has to be one of the most overlooked rapper/producers in the rap music industry as 'Retaliation...' showcases both his talents on and off the mic. Singles 'In California' and 'It Might Sound Crazy' happen to be the best on the 18 track LP. Not only can the rapper instruct how to have a good time west coast style but can also express personal matters on 'Baby Mama Drama' a soft, yet very addictive beat telling the story of how his 'baby's mama' turn his own child on him. The title track is yet another heavy listen and to top the album off, there is even the feature of rap legend Tupac Shakur on the up-tempo 'Initiated'. Proving to be exceptional by himself, the album also includes fellow rappers Snoop Dogg, the Outlawz, Def Jam's WC, Too Short and legendary vocalist Nate Dogg. Sharing his religious beliefs on 'Thank God For My Life' and the good times on 'Ridin' High' add a nice touch to the well fulfilled album. The album really has no cold spots as production remains (even during dips) consistant. Its too bad that this album did not recieve the critical acclaim it so blatently deserves as Daz Dillinger proves to be one of the best producers (underground or not) in the game - period. Unfortunately, due to financial and personal conflicts with the infamous Death Row Records head Suge Knight, this was Dillinger's first and last solo effort on a major record label. Daz Dillinger is now signed to acclaimed producer Jermaine Dupri's So So Def Records is currently at work on his next major solo LP titled 'So So Gangsta' due for a 2004 release.

The classic Death Row sound on an underrated LP,
By
This review is from: Retaliation Revenge & Get Back (Audio CD)
Daz Dillinger, one half of the legendary Dogg Pound duo, was also one of the overlooked engineers behind the classic Death Row sound, a style that defined an era and genre of hip hop music. Not only was he an accomplished performer in his own right by the time his solo debut "Retaliation, Revenge and Get Back" dropped in 1998, but he was also a creative force behind such West Coast classics as All Eyez on Me, Tha Doggfather, and G-Funk Classics, Vols. 1 & 2, among others. His recognizable, distinctly Long Beach sound consists of slick, upbeat, heavy beats, often polished with a smooth R&B influence. Although rarely cited as such, he is one of the West Coast's finest and most influential producers, and his skills are on full display on "Retaliation, Revenge and Get Back," which despite a lack of name recognition in comparison with some other classics from Death Row is quite exemplary of the sound that made the label infamous.
On the heels of the success of Tha Dogg Pound's classic debut Dogg Food, Daz got to work recording his solo debut, but with inner turmoil at Death Row, the project never saw the light of day until 1998. I truly believe that had this been released in a timelier manner, it would have been much more well-known, because it's an album of straightforward gangsta rap that perfectly captures the Death Row sound. It also features a huge and very impressive guest roster of the finest MCs to ever call California home, including partner-in-crime Kurupt, DPGC mainstays Soopafly, Tray Deee, Big Pimpin' Delemond, Big C-Style, Lil C-Style, J-Money, Bad Azz, Techniec, and Val Young, and legends MC Eiht, WC, Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg, 2Pac and Outlawz, B-Legit, and Too Short. These guests provide a ton of star power, but even with so many, Daz maintains the spotlight and ensures that the album is extremely consistent even over the 75-minute running time. It's a blockbuster album for sure and quite an enjoyable one, as the songs are well sequenced and the energy remains constant. Daz opens the LP with a bang (no pun intended) on the posse cut "Gang Bangin A.. Criminal," with the Long Beach dream team of Kurupt, Soopafly, Tray Deee, Bad Azz, and Techniec. It's a hookless, tag-team gem with a simple, dark g-funk beat and great chemistry, with all six MCs on the exact same page and the classic Death Row sound. "It's Going Down" and "Our Daily Bread" are Kurupt duets and both standard Dogg Pound fare with solid production, and other early highlights include the upbeat, slick "Playa Partners" with Bay Area vet B-Legit, and the bouncy Too Short collaboration "It Might Sound Crazy." My favorite song is "In California," which is Daz at his finest, repping his home over a heavy, thumping West Coast beat and a great hook by Val Young. A late 2Pac and Outlawz meet Daz and Kurupt on "Initiated," a strong cut, followed by another standout, "Oh No" with Tray Dee and J-Money. The title track also happens to be Daz's only solo song, and it's nice as well. Snoop Dogg and Nate Dogg deliver unforgettable performances in the Long Beach classic "O.G.," and Big C-Style and Lil C-Style are featured on the self-explanatory "Baby Mama Drama." "Only For U" is a likable love song with Val Young again on the hook, and the WC duet "Ridin' High" is a sunny, upbeat, irresistible number with great piano and bass instrumentation and an awesome hook. A late gem is "Ultimate Come Up," a furious winner with Bad Azz and MC Eiht over an eerie, hard-hitting beat. Before the outro is a final posse cut, the positive and hopeful "Thank God for My Life," with Bad Azz, Soopafly, Tray Deee, and Big Pimpin' Delemond. Listeners should know that Daz Dillinger isn't going to be dropping science or making any experimental or artistic gambles on "Retaliation, Revenge and Get Back," and this album is full of music for the streets and party. The album is straightforward, somewhat predictable, and quite enjoyable, and I highly recommend that fans of Death Row and West Coast rap check it out. Daz has a truly massive discography and this is definitely a good starting point as well.

I rememeber when this album came out I had to get it(you see back then you could guarantee that any album off Deathrow was going to be great). I wasnt dissapointed and I still think that Daz is terribly underrated as a producer. The album has a slew of guest features but dont think that only the songs with guest spots are good. Great solo joints like Retaliation, Revenge and Get Back and In California proved you wrong. Kurupt and Daz hammer out DPG classic joints like It's Going Down and Our Daily Bread(back when Kurupt was still spittin'). B-Legit joins in on the smooth Playa Partners and Snoop makes his present felt on O.G. 2pac(RIP), Kurupt and The Outlawz join in on the overlooked gem Initiated. Too Short joins in on the fun in It Might Sound Crazy and Gang Bangin A** Criminal(which feature Tha Gang, Kurupt and Technique) is the hardest song on the album. This album is not without its flaws. Baby Mama Drama is hard on the ears and Only For U is a forced love joint which features horrific singing from Val Young. Thank God For My Life is another skippable track. After these three the rest of the album is smooth sailing. Bottom Line: Daz Dillinger's Retaliation, Revenge And Get Back is a west coast gem that should be in every fan of west coast rap's collection. It's one of the few great albums from Deathrow that wasnt made by Tupac. Daz was still sharp with the flow, the production(with the exception of three songs) was on point and the guest appearances were on fire too. Standout Tracks: GANG BANGIN A** CRIMINAL, PLAYA PARTNERS, IT MIGHT SOUND CRAZY, OUR DAILY BREAD, INITIATED, RETALIATION REVENGE AND GET BACK, O.G., IN CALIFORNIA, OH NO and THE ULTIMATE COME UP.

Unbelievably Good,
By G Funkin (Land of Sunshine) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Retaliation Revenge & Get Back (Audio CD)
Daz Dillinger, one half of Tha Dogg Pound, turns out a solid solo album. I know a lot of people prefer Kurupt's rapping style over Daz's, but not me. When Daz is at his best, very few can touch him. And man, is he at his best here. Most of the songs here are so fine-tuned and sleek. I'm still not sure how this ranks in comparison to Regulate: The G Funk Era, The Chronic, or even Tha Dogg Pound's Dogg Food, but I don't think it really matters for now. Even if it doesn't rank up there, this is still a solid album with that g funk sound that was more popular at the beginning of the 90s than at the end.
"Only For U" is truly a great song. Lady V, the fantastic crooner that has done the backing vocals for the likes of 2Pac, truly shines. She starts off the song and it isn't until about a minute in that Daz starts rhyming. And surprise, he shows us his softer side. This is the most romantic rap song I've heard in a long time. And when Big Pimpin--Daz's faithful prophet of the pseudo-philosophical--comes on near the end, and chants the lines: "She's a bad woman, bad meaning beautiful, wonderful and good/She dances to her heritage to shake herself free/She inspires us, the chains break/And wipes the sweat from her independent dignity with grace/ She is a bad woman, bad meaning beautiful, wonderful and good"...it was over for me. This song is incredible. The first song I actually heard from this album was Ridin High. Only For U is its own league, but this song is great as well. The ending to this song is so great. First WC comes in with some great fast rapping and then, like Quik does a lot, Daz hits us with a funky piano solo to wrap things us. The beat becomes the star. Another great song on here is Baby Mama Drama which has lyrics that are as good as the beat. OG and Playa Partners finish up the list of good songs. Retaliation Revenge and Get Back came out after the worldwide fame of g funk had peaked. But with albums like this, Daz and others have kept it very much alive for fans to enjoy for so many years. I guess that's what people respect about him. Even after a musical fad has died down, Daz stays loyal. |
