I had high hopes for this book. The author seemed very practical when I read some of his quotes from a news article, so bought the book online.

I am a down to earth, 50 year old technology worker who has worked hard all my life, invested faithfully in 401ks, etc.. , but very unsure how / when I can retire.

The book has a couple of useful pieces, but in general is a useless overview of financial basics and fails to deliver.

If you are seeking an different answer to the same question ( when / how can I retire without a defined pension), don't waste your time on this book.

Rethinking Retirement is not a "How to retire early" book, or even a "How to invest for riches" book, it's about changing the way we think about and live the second half of our lives. Having spent almost 20 years as a personal financial advisor, I watched hundreds - maybe thousands - of clients suffer through jobs they hated in hopes of one day being able to retire, only to watch them continue to struggle once they did retire. For most, the struggle wasn't with money, but with finding a sense of purpose, developing a new identity, or in harboring regrets over abandoned dreams.

The reality is that millions of us delay following our dreams waiting for the day when we can finally retire, believing only then can we finally do what we've always wanted to do. But with fewer pensions and insufficient savings, the retirement finish line for many continues to get pushed further and further away. My goal with this book is to challenge the reader to think about what's really important in your life - your relationships, your passions and your dreams - and provide a way to manage the financial and personal resources that you do have to bring more of those things deeper into your life. Financial security isn't rocket science, it simply means educating yourself and following a few basic rules. Rethinking Retirement gives you those rules, and sheds light on the other areas of your life you may be sacrificing in pursuit of the retirement illusion.
