When you write an article or a book you have to choose your audience. My thought was who is going to read this thing? I originally thought to gear it to people in their late 50's or early 60's. People who are starting to think about their future or maybe realize their total lack of plans for this coming wonderful time in their lives. And then I thought what about those other seniors who are just plugging along or (heaven forbid) only boringly passing time until they die. For those of you over that age theres a lot in here for you to learn, think about, and consider. This book has turned out to be for all of us "soon to be old people, in-between-people, seniors, retirees, etc. For you this is a book about choices. So often it is that one idea around the corner that can change your path.
In this book, I discuss Choosing a New Location and the criteria I used, Making It Yours no matter where, plus other options to consider. I talk about why I chose this ! Kind of Residence to live in and mention other possibilities. There's a chapter on Making New Friends, Keeping Old Ones, and a section on Getting Involved in Life that goes side by side with Senior Organizations, part time jobs and volunteering.
I talk about Money and Budgeting and sacrifices and pleasures and making it all work for the person you are. There is a too long section, but oh so useful, on Eating Plans, getting there and staying that way as long as possible. You are still in charge.
There are bits here and there on entertainment and how to enjoy what's there for you. The chapters on Mates and Partners, Dating Dos and Donts bring you into the 21st Century. It is different whether you are with someone, and really different when you are alone.
Being involved, interesting and informed is also important and included in various sections along the way.
How about your Wardrobe and Appearance and Hair? Make sure all you Males read these hints. I share with you my limited knowledge on Cosmetic Surgery as well as observations on Make-Up disasters. One may wonder why I have used a couple of chapters on total Appearance. Because there is more to a good life when youre retired and not working than just moving and getting settled. It is all important.
There are chapters on Medical Health, Mental Health and finding good care in a strange place. And have you known Unkind People that unfortunately are part of your daily life and must be dealt with too often? There are suggestions included.
And nearly last, a segment I called Looking Forward to Sex. Those feelings and urges never really go away and here are some ideas, thoughts and experiences that you may not have associated with your retirement. Thats why "Retirement for Beginners" is for you.
The last chapter is about Mental, Emotional and Intellectual Changes that happen to us. A mother in law in my family summed it up with this quote, "Lifes journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to slip in sideways, totally worn out, shouting, "Holy shit! What a ride!"
