Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Described here are more than 400 retirement communities in 39 states that offer independent living and a full range of health-care services. Arranged by state, entries note ownership, minimum age, breakdown of residents by sex and marital status, dining plan, services included in the monthly fee and at additional cost, activities, length of waiting list, and types of health-care services available, such as assisted care and nursing care. A table lists the entrance fee (if any) and the monthly fee for independent-living housing. Prefatory matter includes questions to ask when choosing a community and basic financial, medical, and legal considerations. A glossary defines such terms as continuing care. Appendixes include lists of accredited communities and those that provide Alzheimer's care and respite care.

National Continuing Care Directory (AARP, 1988) provides similar information for 366 communities. The second edition of the National Directory of Retirement Facilities (Oryx, 1988) includes a much wider range of residential alternatives, such as boarding care and congregate living as well as independent living, with a total of 18,000 facilities. But some of the information in these titles, such as prices, is now outdated. While it is not comprehensive, Retirement Living Communities will be useful in public libraries, helping retirees and their children find housing alternatives. Sandy Whiteley

This review is from: Retirement Living Communities: A National Directory to over 400 Copmmunities, Listed State by State, That Offer High-Quality Independent Living and (Paperback)
This Directory provides and orients the reader to the better retirement communities throughout the U.S. Extremely well organized and laid out. Thoughtful presentation of many of the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of each facility. Not a critique but good overview information. The 16 page Introduction includes a history of retirement communities, how to choose a retirement community, a list of important questions and terms, and, basic financial, legal and medical considerations from three leading experts
