Retox rocks as hell!,
By Matt Krueger (Auckland, NZ) - See all my reviews

Another new album from turbonegro: to be honest I was a bit sceptical at first. Since the 'dudes' none of their albums has really worked for me. They were not bad, but somehow they couldn't wow me. I heard them a few times and tried to like them, but didn't really manage.
Retox is different: After a few weeks of intense listening, I really like it a lot. I even like it better than the 'dudes' currently, but this might be a temporary effect. Or I simply have listened to the 'dudes' too much! Anyway, 'Retox' rocks as hell! The songs go straight in your face, the production is nice and raw. The turbonegro style is the familiar mixture of hardcore punk a la poison idea, hardrock and glam rock, spiced with some oldschool trashmetal. Not to forget the somewhat self-ironic lyrics that usually circle around homoerotic topics. My personal favorites are 'garbage dump', 'do you dig destruction', 'into the void' (no sabbath cover by the way) and 'what is rock'. If you like rock'n roll and punkrock go get this album!

Are you sick of deconstruction?,

Pure sarcasm about rock and high quality rock at the same time. I thought their previous album was the best, but now i'm not really sure. Retox is brutal, like an atom bomb, from the beginning to the end.

This is an outstanding album by Turbonegro. Unfortunately, it will be the last with Rune Rebellion on guitar. It's hard to capture the raw energy you see from Turbonegro in a live show, and to take it to the studio is even more difficult. Well, Retox has every bit of the live performance energy. It's a great album, and like all Turbonegro albums of the past, a lot of fun to listen to.

Death, resurrection and transmigration.,

Ah, could it be? Could the shame and the horror of a truly great band going [...] up and turning out two humiliating albums of pure suckage come to an end? Will this be an Ali-style rope-a-dope? Or will these guys be the next Gary Numans, with an entire generation of apologists trying to convince the rest of us that they were cool once?
These are probably high stakes. Happy Tom has been talking for years now about growing up from punk into glam. Not even David Bowie could do both glam and punk on their own terms. If these clowns manage to hit *that* ball out of the park, they're gonna write the blueprint for pretty much the whole rock scene for a long time to come. So far, the prerelease tracks on YouTube and elsewhere are promising... Boys From Nowhere, We're Gonna Drop the Atom Bomb and Welcome to the Garbage Dump are pretty great. But it remains to be seen if these are truly the ubermenschen we've all heard about. |
