Book Description

May 1, 2000
Winner of the 2001 Arthur Tofte Award for Juvenile Fiction!

Young Chigger O'Malley is glad when the battered Rebel Army is trapped by floodwaters while retreating from the battlefield at Gettysburg. His father and three older brothers have all been killed while serving in the famed Irish Brigade, and Chigger hopes the Union Army will attack and end the war. But when he and his mother are forced to care for a wounded Rebel officer, the questions of right and wrong -- of friend and enemy -- become much more difficult to answer.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-9-Chigger O'Malley, 14, chronicles the Rebel army's retreat through Williamsport, MD. The boy, whose father and brothers fought and died in the Union army, undergoes a crisis of character when he and his mother are forced to care for a wounded Confederate officer. The research and attention to historical detail are exemplary; the author has masterfully combined factual events with a powerful plot. Interspersed throughout the teen's accounting of these two tumultuous weeks in 1863 are period photographs, reproduced from a variety of institutions such as the National Archives and the C & O Canal National Historic Park. These illustrations are seamlessly integrated with the narrative. Through the pacing and point of view, Ernst does a good job of holding readers' interest, and the main character's voice is clear and compelling. An excellent example of how to teach history through fiction.

From Booklist

Gr. 5-8. In July 1863, 14-year-old Chig O'Malley looks after his depressed, withdrawn mother in their Williamsport, Maryland, cabin. Floodwaters swell the nearby Potomac, where Confederate troops are retreating from the Gettysburg battlefield. When a doctor insists that the O'Malleys care for a wounded Confederate soldier, they reluctantly comply, but Chig finds himself struggling to act with Christian compassion toward a representative of the men who killed his father and brothers. Chig's personal victory comes in helping the soldier cross the Potomac. Meanwhile, he and his mother both come to terms with the loss of loved ones, Chig decides what his role in the war must be, and his mother is reconciled with her daughter-in-law and baby grandchild. Meticulous attention to history is the strong point of this first-person narrative, which takes on an ambitious story, perhaps too large to develop well in such a short novel. Still, the characters are distinctly drawn and young people with a strong interest in the period may enjoy absorbing history through Chig's descriptions. Black-and-white illustrations, including period photos, engravings, and paintings, appear throughout the book, and an author's note and an annotated bibliography are appended. Carolyn Phelan

More About the Author

Kathleen Ernst is a novelist, social historian, and educator. Her seventeenth book is "The Heirloom Murders: A Chloe Ellefson Mystery," the second in a series of novels for adult readers that are set at historic sites. The first Chloe book, "Old World Murder," was published in 2010 and is available from Amazon as a trade paperback and for the Kindle.

Kathleen's historical fiction for children and young adults include eight American Girl mysteries set between 1732 and 1945, and five novels for young readers set during the American Civil War. These titles have earned four Arthur Tofte Juvenile Fiction Awards, the Flora MacDonald Award, a WILLA Finalist Award, an Edgar Award nomination, and three Agatha Award nominations.

Kathleen has also authored a nonfiction adult book about the Civil War, "Too Afraid to Cry: Maryland Civilians in the Antietam Campaign," which was an alternate selection of the History Book Club. It tells the stories of non-combatants who found themselves caught up in the bloodiest day in American history.

For ten years Kathleen wrote instructional video scripts for public television; honors for those include a regional Emmy Award, Platinum Best of Show Aurora Award, and a Wilbur Schramm Award of Excellence.

Kathleen has a Masters Degree in History Education and Writing from Antioch University, where her self-designed program focused on nontraditional methods of teaching and learning history--with a special emphasis on historical fiction. She spent over a decade as a Curator of Interpretation and Collections with the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, Historic Sites Division, which provided great material for her novels.

She lives near Madison, Wisconsin with her husband Scott and Sophie the cat. Some of her greatest pleasures include gardening, learning folk crafts, traveling to research new books, and hearing from readers.

Kathleen has a blog, Sites and Stories, writes poetry and essays, and is working on her third Chloe Ellefson mystery and new books for American Girl.

This review is from: Retreat from Gettysburg (Hardcover)
Imagine the year is 1863, just after the Battle of Gettysburg, and you've lost your father and all three brothers in the war. What would you do if a confederate soldier, your fierce enemy, needs help? And would it be right to leave your grieving mother to fight for the cause? These are questions Chigger, the main character of RETREAT FROM GETTYSBURG, faces. Kathleen Ernst's careful research and immense knowledge of this tragic time in history permeate the book. My fourth-grade students get caught up in the fast-moving plot and are drawn to the authentic illustrations. Ernst's lyrical use of language also make this a delightful read aloud.
