The books in the 'Retreat with' series, published by St. Anthony Messenger Press, have become wonderful devotional tools in my spiritual toolkit! Each book provides a general background of a saint (or v. godly person,) the context in which they lived, and 7 brief sessions in which they 'serve' as Spiritual director (culled from their teachings/writings/ and/or life history.) Each chapter ends with suggested reflection activities and a closing prayer. These are great tools for individual retreats, daily devotions or group studies - and, at 90 or so pages, very easy to read, take along on trips etc. I so appreciate how the editors make the challenges & struggles of these saints (of yesteryear) so relevant to our struggles today.

In this book, series editor Gloria Hutchinson does a great job pulling the best bits of St. Teresa of Avila's human and humorous side into hard-hitting challenges for us to live by today. As a BIG fan of St. Teresa (her "Life", the Interior Castle etc.), I really appreciated this format that made me laugh, reflect, pray - and thank God for such an amazing woman of faith who still draws us closer to the heart of Jesus today!
