I love this pencil! It comes with several large erasers and extra lead. It is heavy and feels good to write with . . . the lead is soft, so it doesn't dent the pages and all marks disappear cleanly with the very good eraser. This would be an excellent gift for the serious crossword puzzler in your life!

A nice, elegant pen. Great for doing crosswords. But WATCH OUT if you are buying refills for these pens. Apparently the manufacturer made two versions!

I bought the 1.15mm refills available here on Amazon for my wife's pen after checking the manufacture site (retro51.com) and the Amazon listing for the pen. BOTH say the pen uses 1.15mm leads. Well that is just not correct. The 1.15mm refills do not fit in my wife's pen which appears to require 0.9mm. Good luck trying to figure out if your pen is 0.9 or 1.15.

Undoubtedly a good product for those for whom it works, but 3 stars for incorrect data posted here and by the manufacturer themselves and for the aggravation of going through a return process because of that.

This is my 2nd Tornado pencil. They are fantastic, and the thick lead never EVER breaks. I won't do a crossword with anything else.

I have had a Retro 1951 Cross Word Mechanical Pencil for over four years. I recently ordered another one just in case. The mechnical part of the pencil is well made. Most mechanical pencils give up the ghost after about two years. The lead furnished with the pen is a great choice and is cleanly erased by the excellent erases furnished in the pencil kit. This is important to persons like myself who don't get it right the first time. I highly reccommed this mechnical pencil.

My wife loves crosswords, and I wanted to upgrade her "experience."

I sweated a lot more than it turns out I needed to over the purchase of this mechanical pencil. Sometimes you need to hold a pencil to decide. And this one is no different. It is a bit shorter than a normal pencil, and quite a bit wider. The lead is thicker as is the eraser. The clip is really solid, and the grip at the top for turning the lead is not too sharp or uncomfortable. The crossword finish is nicely below a strong non-plasticy-feeling (sorry - couldn't think of another way to put it - LOL), finish.

The pencil has a nice feeling to it and a "touch" of heft - those that like that will know what I mean. It feels really nice to use. Solidly built.

The mechanical side seems solid too. The lead is easy to replace and turning the top moves the lead smoothly up and down and holds in in place equally well for writing.

If I were to muster a complaint, it is only that the lead is a bit thick for those tiny crosswords (Sunday NYT), but not a deal breaker.

It comes with a spare lead and eraser pack and in a nice container.

Most importantly, my wife loved it.

This pencil is great, very high quality, works flawlessly, and the erasers are "tuned" to the lead so that erasure (if you ever make a mistake...) is total and quick. Makes a great gift, as has been said, for anyone who likes puzzles, and for lovers of mechanical pencils, one of the great inventions of all time.

I originally got one for my girlfriend, because she does the New York Times puzzle every day with a pencil. Then, I bought another one for myself because I love the feel and quality of this instrument. The eraser works very well on newsprint too.

This pencil is perfect for the newspaper puzzles as it doesn't rip the paper. Great quality and feels so nice in your hand when writing.
