4.0 out of 5 stars too short! May 18, 2011
By sm
Format:Paperback
I loved the pictures and how "Authentic" the makeup techniques were presented in this book. The author did a wonderful job replicating various looks from the 1920's 30's 40's 50's and 1960s. I really enjoyed how she showed how to do winged eyeliner of the 1950s and the cleopatra look of the 1960s. That was impressive! Another aspect of the book I liked was that Lauren showed what type of lipsticks shades looked best on what type of skin color to get a vintage look. Furthermore she went into details of the popular colors and textures of the makeup used for each decade. There was a lot of history that was explained in this book, I thought it would be more about technique and different looks, unforunately the book was a bit short and not as detailed as the authors wonderful retro hair books. It fell a bit short. I felt she could have added a bit more on various looks on movie stars and models of the time periods. And there was barely any mention of popular nail looks or polish that was used for different decades. Also foundation and pancake makeup application was virtually overlooked. I did enjoy the book and think Rennells is gloriously talented, I just wish there was more looks and more subject matter! Still overall, it is a interesting book, with some wearable looks to try.

5.0 out of 5 stars Retro A Go-Go June 25, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
When you are wanting the Be-All End-All to Retro looks you will purchase this book, Retro Make-up and the sister, Vintage Hairstyling. Lauren Rennells is all knowledgeable when it comes to Retro looks, as she has been doing them for some time as a freelance, make-up and stylist for tv, film, and photos. As a hair dresser I am leery of hair and make-up how to's...because a lot have not been doing hair daily as long as I have, and don't explain the why's. It has been CLEAR to me that Lauren Rennells understands, and KNOWS without a doubt what she is talking about when she talk about high lighting and low lighting make up and where to put them. Every step, how to has been tested, broken down and made simple so ANYBODY can use it. Lauren Rennells books have transformed my Pin-curls and Cat eye's. My books have already been looked at, drooled on, loved so much and almost stolen. Will I purchase this book again? Without a Doubt! Can licensed professionals use this? Enthusiastic YES. Can you, who wants to do it for fun use it easily? With easy steps like these you will rock that Cat-Eye like nobody's business.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent coverage from the 20's to the 60's August 1, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
The book is truly excellent. The information was flawless and the directions are clear and concise. I love several things about the book specifically the information on Tools and Techniques. The information on the use of various brushes, contouring, eyebrow shaping and lipstick were amazing. The chapters were complete and very true to the respective periods. I like that Lauren does not leave out women of color, there is a Josephine Baker inspired look as well as jazz singer inspired look. The book has an excellent layout, plenty of photos of examples and is chock full of great information. A necessity for anyone who loves vintage styles and looks.
