Between my dad and myself, we've logged about 20 hours of use with the Retro Bit NES, and it's a decidedly mixed bag.
- Plays most NES games.
- Compatible with your original NES controllers
- Bundled controllers are not bad if you don't have your originals handy
- The audio runs the gamut from "horrible" to "new adjective invented expressly for the way music sounds on the Retro Bit NES"
- Knows which games are your favorites, and will proceed to not play them
- Build quality is poor
The Retro Bit NES feels like a $20 console: cheap. It weighs less than a cartridge, and the assorted jacks around the unit have a disconcertingly "soft" feel to them -- I was positive I was going to punch a hole right through the case when I tried to plug in my original NES controllers.
It will play many of your games, which is good. It won't play several that I like, which is unfortunate. Namely: Castlevania 3, Dragon Warrior, and Dragon Warrior 2.
One item of particular horror to me is the audio, which isn't just distorted, but actually off-key in some games. Invariably, the games that exhibit this behavior are the ones with the particularly rich soundtracks, so DW3, DW4, and Crystalis are next to impossible to enjoy with the volume up. I want to emphasize this, because reviews elsewhere on the net downplay the audio trouble: the bad audio is not just buzzing or distortion -- the actual notes come out wrong.Read more ›
minutes of that game each day, leaves the unit on to save his place in the game (as the game doesn't
allow for his progress to be saved) and continues the next day. He has been doing this for about six
weeks now! This entire time the system has never been shut off, just keeps on running. No lock-ups, no
blue screens of death, etc. The thing just keeps performing well. Controllers are cheap feeling, cords are
thin and the system itself seems to weigh next-to-nothing, but no complaints on performance or durability.
Would definitely suggest this system
Anyway, this thing worked pretty decent. I'll admit, I had to turn it on and off a few times (bring it up to semi classic status), but this may have just been the cartridge's fault, and not the system.
The unit itself is very small which is a plus. Feel super cheap as others have mentioned. But who cares. It works!
As far as the controllers,...everyone seems to complain about them but I actually liked them a lot. Better than the classic Nintendo controllers to be honest. Come to think of it, I think I have a double jointed thumb from playing the piss out of my classic Nintendo when I was little. The D pads on them were super uncomfortable. I feel like these cheapy ones feel a lot smoother and are kinder to your thumbs.
Two buttons seemed to act as a rapid fire (which is perfect for Balloon Fight).
As far as the sound, which also seems to be a complaint amongst the masses, it sounded just as great as the original (I graduated from Nintendo Entertainment System University and I also have emulators and classics bought through my Wii / 3DS, so I know and remember exactly how the games should sound and do sound). But as far as my testing goes, I’ve only played Balloon Fight, which works by the way (some people mention some games do not play. I can confirm Balloon fight does).Read more ›
