3.0 out of 5 stars Well, the price is right August 1, 2011

My original NES has had a hard life, and it just recently reached the point where no amount of cleaning, jiggling, or otherwise profaning the cartridges would make the games boot up, so I bought one of these as a stopgap replacement while I attempted to fix the old unit.

Between my dad and myself, we've logged about 20 hours of use with the Retro Bit NES, and it's a decidedly mixed bag.

- Cheap!
- Plays most NES games.
- Compatible with your original NES controllers
- Bundled controllers are not bad if you don't have your originals handy

- The audio runs the gamut from "horrible" to "new adjective invented expressly for the way music sounds on the Retro Bit NES"
- Knows which games are your favorites, and will proceed to not play them
- Build quality is poor

The Retro Bit NES feels like a $20 console: cheap. It weighs less than a cartridge, and the assorted jacks around the unit have a disconcertingly "soft" feel to them -- I was positive I was going to punch a hole right through the case when I tried to plug in my original NES controllers.

It will play many of your games, which is good. It won't play several that I like, which is unfortunate. Namely: Castlevania 3, Dragon Warrior, and Dragon Warrior 2.

One item of particular horror to me is the audio, which isn't just distorted, but actually off-key in some games. Invariably, the games that exhibit this behavior are the ones with the particularly rich soundtracks, so DW3, DW4, and Crystalis are next to impossible to enjoy with the volume up. I want to emphasize this, because reviews elsewhere on the net downplay the audio trouble: the bad audio is not just buzzing or distortion -- the actual notes come out wrong.

5.0 out of 5 stars Far exceeds expectations December 31, 2012

This unit has performed great under heavy Super Mario Bros. stress-testing. My son plays a few
minutes of that game each day, leaves the unit on to save his place in the game (as the game doesn't
allow for his progress to be saved) and continues the next day. He has been doing this for about six
weeks now! This entire time the system has never been shut off, just keeps on running. No lock-ups, no
blue screens of death, etc. The thing just keeps performing well. Controllers are cheap feeling, cords are
thin and the system itself seems to weigh next-to-nothing, but no complaints on performance or durability.
Would definitely suggest this system

The system looks great. It works perfect but a lil on the cheap side when it comes to the feel of the controllers but well worth the price.

1.0 out of 5 stars Retro Entertainment System April 18, 2011

This system is worthless. When I got mine I plugged it in and the game came on. When I tried to play the game it was blocky. The game I used was cleaned before using it in this system. After 1 short game the screen went black. No picture but I could still hear the game. I should have listened to the other negatives and not bothered to get this system. Waste of time. Look for a real Working Nintendo system. Sorry to disappoint but the reality is this is a cheap and worthless wanna be. This is not an Amazon issue, it is a manufacturer issue. Amazon was very helpful in getting a refund. The only positive for this item. Stay away from this item!!!!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Suitable Replacement? September 3, 2010

Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
This is the "NES Retro Entertainment System," a 3rd party knock off of everyone's favorite Nintendo Entertainment System. The NES Retro is easily locatable on Amazon.com at a reasonable price. Although, is it a suitable replacement for the Nintendo?

I had my Nintendo ever since I was a kid and it never really worked correctly. I would shove cassette tapes in with the games to get the thing to work. About six months ago, I purchased the NES Retro off of Amazon. I really liked at first. It looks really good on paper. My favorite feature was that the Retro uses the same controller ports as the Nintendo. I could use my old accessories like the Zapper, the Power Glove, and R.O.B.

When I received the Retro, I realized a few things. Number one, the Retro feels really cheap. It's about negative three pounds and the plastic feels as brittle as glass. I feel like I'm going to break it when plugging in my Nintendo controller. Number two, the Retro is picky of what controllers it will work with. Only one of the two Nintendo controllers worked with it. Also, due to the orientation of the controller ports you can't use a Four Score or NES Satellite. It does however play Nintendo games extremely well. No more tinkering for thirty minutes to get a game to work. After a while, the port for the AC adapter broke and I had to re-solder the part back on the circuit board. Did I mention the Retro is cheap?!?

Finally, last weekend, I found a guy who runs a shop in the Raleigh flea market that repairs the old Nintendo. He ultimately replaced the pin connector and the game tray in the 25 year old game system. Now, my Nintendo works flawlessly, so I packed up my Retro. Never to be seen again.
