Not simply a compilation,

Made in USA in 2000, Serial# HSR-1020-2, Playing Time 70:09This CD contains a blend of 9 previously released "as is" tracks, 4 alternate versions (not simply remixed) with somewhat heavier arrangements (track 7 originally on "For You", tracks 11+12+13 originally on "Cold War Kids"), and 3 previously unreleased tracks (tracks 8+15+16). The sound quality is impeccable, and much "richer" than his previous album, "The Boystown Tapes". The intensity and genres vary quite a bit, making this an interesting profile of TC, which unfortunately doesn't feature any track from his 5 more electronic ventures under various pseudonyms of 1980. However, we get treated to a hard-to-find song (track 6, which is taken from the soundtrack to the German TV-Series "Wilde Westen Inclusive"). There's enough stuff on here to make the purchase worthwhile to the TC fan, showcasing most of the multiple facets of this multi-instrumentalist: from folk-based to rock, there's something on this album for almost anyone to enjoy.

Good collection,

This review is from: Retrospective: 1982-1999 (Audio CD)
This is a good collection of songs from tony carey. It has all of his U.S hits on it..I won't be home tonight, fine, fine day, first day of summer, and why me. It then continues on with other material from cd's not ever released in USA songs like Room with a view, trampoline, and then some new material which is prety good..i.e run with the lions and I dont wanna be in love. It has more variety than the story so far. I sure wish it had at least one track from pink world on it, but it does a good job of covering the songs that got a lotof air play in the U.S. ever so many years ago. Just think another retospective cold be made that could be as good as this if not even better from material that never got to the radio back in the 80's. Still if you are looking for some of his stuff that isn't out of print this cd is a good place to start

Finally a Good Break in Greatest Hits,
By Kevin L. Collins (Anywhere and Everywhere, Canada) - See all my reviews

...When I purchased this cd here on Amazon, the cost when it home was outrageous, but the more I've listened to the cd, I realized this cd is definately worth its price. The first thing that immediatly hits your ears is the quality and production thats been put into this cd. The songs picked, as it is a greatest hits/best of, were picked from the best, with the exception of a few, even though "Man Camera" was never released, I believe it should have stayed in Tony's vault in Mallorca, Spain. The Demos are nothing really exceptional, but still worth being included in with the rest. This cd, is for the Tony Carey fans but more so for the lost minions. If this cd were to be put on the market, and with many of the tracks included, even a Planet P Project hit, would, instantly upon one play, remember all over who one of the worlds finest singers/songwriter is. Your average person wouldnt upon hearing the name Fine Fine Day (For a Reunioun), but the minute they hear, bang. The memories come flooding back. Tony Carey is buried in the back of everyone out there who was 20 or so when I Wont Be Home Tonight came out, and then a couple albums later he was gone. Anyway, only things that have been repeated, two greatest hits to offer up, a '97 release in Germany called "A Fine Fine Day" fabulous line up of songs, but hard to find, even here on Amazon its listed as limited availability, that means "Hardly Likely, but we'll Try" (From Experience With Other TC cds) and now this cd in a sense fills the gaps of that one. Easy 2 cd best of....

I bought this cd not to long ago and found it be a good cd. It has all the stuff from the 80's which was played on the air except for west coast summer nights. The material afterward is good too especially tramopline and 20 days.

Plastic is expensive!!!!!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Retrospective: 1982-1999 (Audio CD)
Well, first off the disc is loaded with songs that should never have made it there such as Man Camera. TC has released many incredible albums/cds over the years, but this greatest hits package with some demos and unreleased doesnt cut it. I'm really hurt to the bones to have to say these things about my favorite artist, but when thinking about TC's music you think of all the music over the years that has impressed us to the core. We cant forget his early albums, and when whe get imports we are even more impressed. Retrospective is not one of those cds. Filed away. I like listening to I Wont Be Home Tonight from original plus other great songs, I cant wait to hear PPP again (now that I've mentioned) But with the cost of plastics to make cds and all other costs, I do believe that the money could be spent on creating a true album, not one that hums through history...

very good cd,

This sort of greastest hits package and some new things. The versions of Dust and 20 Days are supposedly demo's but they don't sound like demo's, in fact they are more catchy than the versions on cold war kids cd. Running with the lions is the best of the new tunes, actually made in 1988, just never did fit on a record after that but it would of fit well on bedtime story(1987). I don't believe in love is another new a hard rocker and very good. Man Camera is ok, kind of weak lyrics. The rest of these have been on cd before from various cd's.It is overall a very good package, not quite perfect but if you can't find anything else and are looking for carey tunes or want the different versions of the songs, Heard it on the radio is also a different version on this cd, then this cd is for you.

A good but simple Hits cd,
By Richard Cale (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Retrospective: 1982-1999 (Audio CD)
A previous review has, to me bashed this album, mind you it, standing on its own is not his best. I do however, like the choice of demos and unreleased that us fans finally get to hear something different. I Wont Be Home Tonight, Why Me, Some Tough City, Blue Highway, definate favorites from years gone by when we enjoyed life in polly-anna land. A time when some of us were still young enough to party every day and all night long. Pass it by or pick it up, but its a good add to any collection, just missing a bit on the overall outcome, perhaps a few tracks could have been added to really make it a five star cd

Something for everyone,

Whether you're a casual fan of the radio songs from the 80's wondering "what ever happened to Tony Carey", or a TC die-hard looking for rarities, alternative mixes and new songs, this CD will not disappoint.A WARNING to the casual fan: You WILL NOT be able to stop at just one CD. With each listen, your hunger for more Tony Carey/Planet P will grow. At first you'll be able to satisfy your desires with the other great CDs available here at Amazon.com, but soon you'll find yourself wandering from online auction site to online auction site, searching high and low for the harder to find items. But rest assured, you will not be alone. Enjoy!

A great cd.,

Before I got this cd, I only knew Tony Carey's "Some Tough City" which I really liked. I especially liked the song "A Fine, Fine Day. I ordered this cd because "A Fine, Fine Day" was on it and since it was a best of cd I knew it would give me a good overview of all of his work. When I got the cd I was blown away. There are so many great songs on here. I am the kind of person who likes songs that tell a story. If you do too then you need to give this artist and this cd a try. I now have 12 Tony Carey cd's and I love them all. I have also given "Retrospective" as a gift to two friends who didn't know Tony's music and they really like it as well. |
