Amy and Emily give us another great album,
By Maureen (Denver, CO USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Retrospective (Limited Edition Digipack) (Audio CD)
The Indigo Girls never cease to amaze me. I have followed their careers from their first cd Strange Fire to Retropective. Retrospective is a good collaboration of their greatest hits. The first 14 songs have already been released on previous albums. I would recommend this cd to those people who are just now becomings fans. The songs on this album are the ones that are the biggest crowd pleaser's and one's that you just have to have. And to those of you who already own all other Indigo Girls cd's released, I would still recommend buying it. Amy's new song 'Devotion' touches my heart and the beat is new and exciting. And in Emily's new song 'Leaving', the duo harmonize beautifully again. This album is a good demonstration of their musical career over the years and gives us a hint of the music yet to come.

A great... retrospective,
By popjunkie "popjunkie" (Atlanta, GA USA) - See all my reviews

This is a great "retrospective" in the sense that it provides a journey for the listener through the Indigo Girls' recorded history. As a long-time fan (since "Closer to Fine"... yes, I'm old!), this CD was sort-of a let-down because it didn't contain MY favorites... however, that wasn't its intent. It's intent is to cull one or two representative songs from each recording. The two new songs are, in this reviewer's opinion, some of the best music the Indigo Girls have ever done... especially "Leaving," which I cannot listen to without thinking of all my friends and loved ones over the years who have moved on... it always brings tears to my eyes. I think this is a great addition to the Indigo Girls' body of work.

Good overview, but not complete,

Retrospective is a good CD, and a good one to get if you're thinking of getting into the Indigo Girls' music. While the album provides a good sampling of Indigo Girls old and new, it's far from complete. If you want a real 'compilation' of their works, 1200 Curfews is much better (not to mention, they're at their best live). But for a quick and dirty taste of the Girls, Retrospective provides good flavor.

Pros & Cons,
By Dralion (Decatur, GA) - See all my reviews

This CD is a great introduction for people who are "interested" in Indigo Girls but haven't made the leap and purchased their CDs. It's a good representation of each of their albums, and as always, there are songs any avid fan would wonder "How could they have left THAT out?!" It covers the "hits," and since 'Closer to Fine' was their only radio "hit," this means - these are the songs they play religiously live & the crowd sings along. The two new songs are nice additions - and are reason enough for anyone that appreciates their music to purchase the disc.

The Power of Two.,
By H3@+h "Over 1500 reviews!" (thanks for the helpful review votes) - See all my reviews

I normally don't listen to this kind of stuff, but I was won over by the sound and talent of these two. Great melodies and meaningful lyrics are just a couple of the things I like. The more popular songs are on here, like "Closer to Fine", "Power of Two", and "Least Complicated", but I really like "Three Hits", and "Galileo" just as much. I wish "Back Together Again" was on here, but otherwise this has everything I know by them. It's hard to compare them to anyone, but "CSN", "Simon and Garfunkel", and "Cowboy Junkies" come to mind, kind of. If you want just one "Indigo Girls" cd, this is the one.

Fantastic music,

I'm not a life-long fan. I heard a few songs on the radio, was impressed by the quality of the song writing and the vocals. I got lucky when I bought this CD. It is enjoyable from beginning to end. Remember music before MTV made image more important than talent? This is it. Take it from a middle-aged father, do yourself a favor and listen to this music - it takes you away to peace and pure enjoyment. I know that this vocal group has been branded as outside the mainsteam, but it is so superior to the top-40 junk that it's amazing. I'm only sorry I didn't find it sooner.

I have been a loyal fan for years. I was a little dissapointed in this collection for two main reasons. First, one of their best albums was largely overlooked: Nomads, Indians and Saints. Watershed is the only song chosen to represent this fine album. Second, true fans will agree that the 'hits' that were chosen were not true absolute favorites by longtime fans. As good as the songs are, gems such as "pushing the needle too far", "southland in the springtime" and "Virginia Wolff" were left off. That's just to name a few. I love the girls, and the new songs are great. However, if you want a true greatest hits, check out the live 1200 curfews or the import called 4.5.

Yes...I am a fan...,
By Tilford Jackson "Woof" (Duluth, MN USA) - See all my reviews

...and I've been one for five beautiful years now. So, I officially want to say that it is hard for me to be objective, especially about my favorite artists of all time. But a few thoughts... First, between the two, Amy and Emily can play a hell of lot more instruments than I can. They play acoustic and electric guitar, banjo, mandolin, dobro, piano, dulcimer, bouzouki and melodica. Oh...and they sing as well. I don't know about the gent below, but I feel that Amy and Emily have grown in instrumentation as well as harmonies and song writing. I'll never forget the first time I saw them and Emily switched from acoustic to electric guitar, then to banjo, then to piano, and then sat down and played the dulcimer... Next...I would have chosen Mystery to be on this album. As a sampler and a retrospective though, it certainly does show their growth. But as somebody who regularly introduces other people to the work of the Indigo Girls, I would not start with this album. I'd still choose to start with 1200 Curfews because it displays a lot of their songs as well as how good they are in concert. The two new songs, Devotion and Leaving...are more great songs from my favorite songwriters. Both moved me to tears this afternoon when I bought it and went drivin in the country to listen... So...to anybody, like the person below, who is a casual Indigo Girls listener I strongly encourage you to search through every album. It is my belief that once you do you'll drop the "casual" title...

Totally inspiring,

Having never bought an Indigo Girls CD (mostly out of laziness and the fact that I never had a CD player in my car until 2 weeks ago), I happened upon this on the new release wall at my favorite store. I am truly a lover of every style of music, but I have never played a CD continuously as much as this one. It is so uplifitng, thought provoking, and the music is fabulous. I can't wait to buy some more of the early CD's. The only song I didn't like was "GO". (Too much of a metal rock sound for me, and nothing like the rest of the album.)I will say the rich lyrical intensity is a breath of fresh air after listening to Shania Twain's elementary lyrics on the radio. You don't have to agree with all of their points of view to appreciate the superb artistry and music. Listening is a very freeing experience -- it keeps the mind from getting stale.

The best,

The Indigo Girls are one of those bands that inspire people to pick up a guitar and try to learn to play, and sing, like an Indigo Girl. This compilation is the best. I have always been a huge fan, but had never listened to the older stuff much. With this CD, I was introduced to some of the old that I had been missing and the new, the best - "Leaving." I love that song!! Some people may not like the political and social statements in the lyrics, but you cannot deny the pure emotion that these songs evoke.
