Aural Metallic Tones..subtitle...Wall of Sound,
By Nev Mendl "T" (Oldsmar, Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Retrospektiv (Audio CD)
Crunching, driving ,metallic guitar sounds coupled with overtones of scant dabblings of symphonic keyboards driven by an incessant chest pounding beat compliments of the slamming drums...and they're Swedish, pretty cool. This album is nice and noisy but it doesn't irritate or drain, instead it invigorates, revitalizes and renews, sounds really good loud and is currently in heavy rotation in my system. Try listening to it at 75 db at 7:00 AM. Upon experiencing the disc in rotation for a while, even the weaker tracks that tended to go a bit long at first listen revealed obscure moments of potency and truly engaged my ears after a few listens...they stuck to me like glue. The barrage of sound filled my head with sound with no chance for escape. There aren't a lot of lyrics on this album, it is mostly instrumental and could be classified (if you are in to classifying) as industrial new wave punk, I put the new wave in there due to the keyboards incorporated on a few of the tracks, however they work quite well to distract from and juxtapose to the onslaught of sound coming from the guitar and drums. I guess you could say it is like being trapped in a blizzard on a barren landscape in sub zero temperatures with only a bleak hint of hope for survival shining through (via the keyboards), but in the end you are virtually doomed to be enveloped by the ever growing encompassing sound, hopelessly falling in to it's heavy hypnotic wall of sound. Who does this band sound like? One of the tunes sounds like Faith No More meets an undiscovered English Punk Rock band from the 70's all pulling a wagon full of thrift store vintage 80'synthesizers as they approach the barren landscape that will soon envelop them later in the album and be their doom (Referring to track 2 "And you said I was the only one") This is one of the lyrical tunes. I like both the instrumental and lyrical cuts on the album, only two are lyrical I believe. Horisant, Spindlar, Hein Bock...What does it mean man!! If you like pure, hard, unadulterated sound, this is a unique aural experience that will definitely have a positive impact on you ear canals, go pick this up and enjoy.

This was a real surprise to my ears upon sampling this disc at the local cd store. I loved the post-punk sound of steady, metallic drum machines, pumping basslines, crystalline synths, and searing rhythmic guitars, which come in abundance on this fine release. These guys must have listened to lots of Joy Division, Public Image Limited, Kraftwerk and Kraut Rock. I'm pretty amazed at how this takes me back to a time when I was skinny, skateboarding all day and staying up all night, tuning into college radio to hear the latest and greatest sounds from the underground. There are few lyrics on this lp, and they're good, though serve the music more as another instrument than anything perhaps. More people should be making music this exciting and adventurous these days.
