Classic Arcade Games on Your PC,
By Richard Cody "witer of fine and not so fine p... (Big Sur, The Golden State) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Return of the Arcade: 20th Anniversary Edition with Ms. Pac-man (CD-ROM)
This disc will be a definite must have if, like me, you wasted great amounts of time as a young person playing the games on this disc in their original arcade versions. You will find yourself idling away the hours once again with the following classics: Pac Man, Ms. Pac Man, Dig Dug, Galaxian and Pole Position.I must admit that I have yet to play Pole Position as I do not possess a joy stick and said device seems crucial to worthwhile play on this game. The same can be said of Galaxian also, but I have nonetheless had fun with this Space Invaders variation. I purchased this disc primarily for the two Pac Man games but was surprised to find Dig Dug emerging as a favorite. Each of the games included here is identical to the classic arcade version (although I could swear you were allowed more free "lives" in the original versions of Pac Man, Ms. Pac Man and Galaxian, all of which reward only one extra per game here). All in all, a solid disc that will provide much entertainment.

Crude graphics, but sophisticated fun!,

This review is from: Return of the Arcade: 20th Anniversary Edition with Ms. Pac-man (CD-ROM)
I can't believe there's a review from someone who complains that the arcade games in this set have crude graphics. No kidding, but if you were a teenager in the 80s, these are among the sweetest sights and sounds you'll ever know. For every one of us who looked forward to the home version of Pac-Man in the 80's, only to get the lackluster, bland, and even cruder Atari 2600 version, this is sweet revenge. You can finally play the actual game in your house. And somehow, each time you play, the taste of New Coke, or the sounds of Hall & Oates or Michael Jackson seem to come along into your mind. Don't be surprised if you start wondering if you have time to finish your algebra homework. It takes you back to high school in the 80s. Maybe if you weren't around back then, you can't appreciate it. But for me, I'd rather sit and watch these crude shaped ghosts chase Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man than those supposedly more sophisticated versions of the games that were recently released. They may have superb graphics, but they lack the most important thing... charm!

These games bring back some GREAT memories!,
By rockland6674 (Massachusetts, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Return of the Arcade: 20th Anniversary Edition with Ms. Pac-man (CD-ROM)
How many of my quarters supplemented the diet of a dot-munching yellow creature? How many hours did I spend tunnelling under the ground, battling creatures named "Pooka" and "Fygar"? The five games on this CD-ROM--"Pac-Man," "Ms. Pac-Man," "Dig-Dug," "Galaxian" and "Pole Position"--were impossible to resist in the video arcades. Even when newer, more sophisticated games came along, I still found myself drawn to these straightforward, yet wonderfully addictive games. They're all coin-op classics, and deservedly so.Twenty years later, they're back, and they all look, sound and play just the way I remember them. If you played these games in the arcades, you remember how much fun they were. If you grew up playing a later generation of games, do yourself a favor and discover the magic of these classics. One drawback: A few of these games--"Pac-Man" in particular--can be awkward to control using directional keypad buttons, unless you're really adept with them (I'm not.) My suggestion: Get a joystick, if you don't already have one. It will add immensely to the "in the arcade" feeling and enhance your enjoyment of these wonderful games.
