A Bruce Willis album? Obviously he's moonlighting...,
By Lawrance M. Bernabo (The Zenith City, Duluth, Minnesota) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (COMMUNITY FORUM 04) (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)
This review is from: Return of Bruno (Audio CD)
This is one of those albums television stars get to make when they have a hit television series, and in that respect Bruce Willis comes out of "The Return of Bruno" looking a lot better than William Shatner, Eddie Murphy or [Fill in Your Choice Here]. This album was put out by Motown, which probably explains the quality of the production values by Robert Kraft. The best track is "Respect Yourself," where Willis is more than ably supported by the Pointer Sisters. Most of the album is devoted to covers, such as "Under the Boardwalk," "Youngblood," and "Secret Agent Man/James Bond Is Back." However, I would say that "Jackpot (Bruno's Bop)" and "Fun Time" are the other high-energy tracks on the album. I can appreciate that there are those who will find this album lame, and certainly the soundtrack for "The Commitments" is much better attempt at the same sort of thing. But there are those of us who can identify with a guy with only a halfway decent voice trying to sing songs he really likes. Fair warning: if you own only one Bruce Willis album, believe me, this is the one to have.

PURE FUN,
By Peter (Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada) - See all my reviews

Come on, all you guys giving this cd zero stars and trashing it. Lighten up, would you? Bruce Willis is THE ONLY televison or movie star from the 80s who successfully managed to put out a good cd. I'm sure those of us old enough to remember the disasterous recording "careers" of Don Johnson and Phillip Michael Thomas or Eddie Murphy will agree with me totally. Bruce Willis' cd is pure lighthearted fun, and it's easy to tell that ol' Bruce is having a blast doing this cd. I'm sure he didn't take it as seriously as all the people here trashing it are. I wore out my cassette version and i'm proud to have it on cd finally. I like his vocal style and he's just a good-time natural guy who is the life of the party. Even better than this cd is his follow-up called If It Don't Kill You It Just Makes You Stronger, which i think has sadly been deleted. Thankfully, i bought the cd way back when it was first released in the stores. His second cd has a more jazzy/swing feel to it and it's just incredible! His vocals are also better too on the second cd, and the production is better too. If you can find a copy of it, snap it up and enjoy. In any case, if you're a fan of Bruce Willis at all, then you should pick up The Return Of Bruno.

Bruce Willis may not win any Grammys, but this CD is pure fun. It's a great party CD and believe me, Bruce doesn't take himself seriously. That's what makes the CD so good. To all the critics who didn't like the CD, lighten up and grab a beer. Grab a girl while you're at it and and dance a little. Keep the faith Bruno!!!

Singin' Bruce - a full-throated guilty pleasure,
By
This review is from: Return of Bruno (Audio CD)
I bought this album shortly after it was released. I even bought Willis' follow up album. I came to it as a Moonlighting fan who enjoyed the cheerful approach Bruce seemed to bring to the songs. He's hardly a master of the vocals, but he's on par with any number of party bands I've heard over the years. His bluesier, growlier numbers ("Young Blood") surpass his pure-vocal attempts like "Under the Boardwalk". I stayed awake on many a road trip bellowing along with Bruce - it's a full-throated guilty pleasure.I've bought it before, and I'll buy it again (I wore out my cassette version). If the more accomplished vocalists in my collection take offense, well, tough. There's always room for Bruno.

Thank God It's Not Don Johnson or Philip Michael Thomas...,

I respect the other reviewers who have held this Willis disc over the fire and coals. However, here's a guy who has made an album that is actually FUN to listen to. At least he does not assume a false and pretentious "soulful" over-the-top vocal style. The guy actually sings in his own natural voice. It's an album meant to be taken strictly for entertainment (nostalgic or otherwise)purposes.Willis in no way makes it a melo-dramatic serious actor effort like Johnson or Thomas (the Vice Guys). He also does not sink to the level of William Shatner. Yes, the Motown backing is very slick but also suits Willis' needs without masking his voice to cover up any "real" or untrained vocal flaws he may have.At best he can be compared to the guy on Karaoke Night at your local bar or dive that, while he doesn't have record executives handing him their business cards, he wows the crowd without getting any drinks or food thrown at him ! He exhudes nothing but a party attitude for a small venue or private club atmosphere for friends (almost like an opening for a Planet Hollywood restaurant;another story in itself)...

A poor effort from Bruce,
By Martha (Orlando, Florida) - See all my reviews

Bruce Willis is a talented actor, but as a singer he is not up to task. There are other singer/actors who have made the transition successfully. Jennifer Love Hewitt and Jennifer Lopez come to mind. As a mild fan of this type of music, I was turned off by Bruce's attitude, which seems to focus more on his ego than on the music. THe band is entertaining, and the prospect exists for a good album by someone with a better voice. I cannot help but think the reason this album is so popular has to do with Bruce's stardom, not his potential to be the next Otis Redding, Sam Cook, or Micheal Bolton.

CHEATING on the blues,
By Dennis Rains (Kutztown, Pa) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Return of Bruno (Audio CD)
I am a long time fan of the blues, and am very disappointed in the performance on this CD. I would have expected better from Bruce, but I guess he is just not up to the task of getting it right. It hurt me in the pocketbook, took time away from my life, listening to this garbage, and really really offended me at some points. Not just the music, but also the attitude is a letdown. Bruce should be expelled from the profession and never ever, ever allowed to teach the blues to the uninitiated again. We deserve better, if we get it or not, depends on you. Don't waste your money, pass on Bruno.

My first copy of this CD was stolen, 'great' some previous critics may think, but I really enjoyed it and was pleased to find it again at Amazon. I love the songs, Bruce obviously does too, and I can sing along to them on the way to work and they start the day of great. Sorry, but I love it!

what on earth were they thinking when they let this man near a microphone? The best I can say is that i never will have to listen to it again. Bruce, stick to making movies.
