This review is from: Return of Captain Sinbad [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I happen to be a big fan of Brett Piper, and when I read about the troubles with this particular child product he had in the creation and distribution of it I could not help but find myself a copy. This was done when Mr. Piper was associated with Kinetic Image back in the day and was coming out with Drainiac, They Bite! and all. Cold Fusion published a review on the internet about this and called it "non-commercial" although I cannot understand why. Running less than an hour, it has all the creative charm of those stop motion animated Christmas specials (especially with the monsters, underground lairs and the Roc that looks like it was left over from Mysterious Planet). It was narrated by Roddy McDowall (Planet of the Apes, Laser Blast, and many Hollywood pieces) and cost a pretty $10,000.00 to have HIM participate. But it got lost in distribution hell. I am amazed it took 9 months for him to animate and despite the criticisms of the music, sound and voices, they are not that bad at all. I could easily have visualized this on television when I was a kid. I read on the Stop Motion forums that the VHS copy we may have here is an semi legitimate copy, done by UAV Corporation and Sterling Entertainment, and according to the forum he hasn't had a statement or notice for 5 or 6 years, so if they are selling it, he is not getting paid. What a business! You have to tip off a hat to indie film makers who continue to plow their craft with their own resources and gamble (or is it certain?) that they will somehow be ripped! If you are a fan of stop motion animation, and into the independent low budget film making scene, this is a piece you have to see. Just as interesting, it would be beneficial to have Mr. Piper, if the DVD would ever be done, give the details on the horrors more magnificent than the creatures he creates here, of the production and distribution of this piece that may yet to see a broadcast on cable or television. Back at you!
