Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

As lean and mean as the Mexican wrestler for whom the album is named, New York-based Latin rockers King Chango (aptly named for the god of music) return with a more sophisticated version of the rock en español that gave them their reputation in 1996. There's plenty of ska and dub here, although with a generous helping of electronica and dance rhythms. Think of King Chango as a more urban version of Maldita Vecindad without the brooding that marks Los Jaguares. It's party time, and Andrew Blanco and the rest of the crew make it nonstop for you. When their eponymous debut appeared in 1996, they were ahead of the Latin curve. Times have changed a lot, but the frantic pace here, and the frequent changeup of styles (sometimes in the middle of a song), help keep them ahead of the growing pack. --Chris Nickson

5.0 out of 5 stars The Mighty Chango..., December 7, 2000
This review is from: Return of El Santo (Audio CD)
This is one of the more sophisticated and enjoyable Spanish rock bands I have heard in quite awhile !Their blend of ska, funk, rock, reggae, various Latin rhythms is somewhat comparable to the sounds of Sublime from the Westcoast but with more conviction and drive. Their sound is a lot bolder and edgier. Everything from the slick guitar riffs,to the deep house- bass is phenomenal and energetic. This is a highly recommended listen if you like the sounds from other Latin pop-rock groups such as Mana, Los Lobos, The Venezuelan Gods, and Los De Abajo... Snatch this one up at your local store or on-line retailer !

King Chango returns with a tour de force follow up to their debut self titled "King Chango." This sophmore effort takes off with more mixtures of styles including salsa, merengue, cumbia, dub, reggae, ska, rag-a-mufin toasting, rock, electronica and tinges of practically every genre. So does it work? A resounding yes. These rude boys deliver various styles, often within one song, it's like a trance song that dips and turns and twists all the while staying on the latin track. This is like music for a paaaarteeeee!! It's like one big jam session. The grooves just blend, flowing nonstop, the rhythms flow, converging on a common ground that is guaranteed to make you move, whatever you're doing you'll feel more energized about it. Favorite tracks are "Brujeria" with references to "la bruja, estupida, arrugada, ridicula." They have sense of humor. "Sin Ti" is a nice down tempo song , reggae infused back beat that starts out in Spanish, reverts to English, back to Spanish again as lead singer and frontman Blanquito eventually delivers some rag-a-muffin. "Step me Down " is like a cross between Rage Against the Machine and Red Hot Chili Peppers with Tower of Power horns meeting Orbital. My faves are in Spanish but the majority of the songs are in English. For English speakers start with this CD, if you favor Spanish language buy the first CD. Either way you can't go wrong-these guys rock, son rockeros de primera!! For a different musical experience, that pleases many tastes, I would definatley recommend this CD for some summer paaaaarteeeeeing!!
