Book Description

September 6, 2011 8 and up Hunter Chronicles (Book 1)800L (What's this?)
ONE BOY. UNTOLD ENEMIES. WEAPONS MADE OUT OF GARBAGE.
SERIOUSLY, WHAT COULD GO WRONG?

Eleven years ago, a band of ancient hunters battled an army of monsters in the town of Exile, and Phineas T. Pimiscule rescued his nephew, Sky, from a terrible evil. For eleven years, Sky Weathers has studied traps, puzzles, science, and the secret lore of the Hunters of Legend, believing it all a game. For eleven years, Sky's parents have dragged him across the U.S. and back again, moving from city to city in an effort to hide him from dark enemies while, unbeknownst to Sky, his uncle Phineas sacrificed everything to protect him.

For eleven years, Sky Weathers has known nothing of that day.

But on the eve of Sky's twelfth birthday and his family's long-awaited return to the town of Exile, Phineas disappears. To find him, Sky joins forces with a ragtag group of teenaged monster hunters who trap creatures using weapons made out of garbage and know even less than he does. But Phineas's disappearance is just the beginning; if Sky can't solve the riddles his uncle left for him in the next two days, Exile will burn. Sky's only hope for a solution lies in confronting the mysterious secrets he's denied for so long: Why did his family leave Exile on that day eleven years ago? What, exactly, has Phineas been preparing him for? And, the biggest mystery of all, who is Sky really and why does everyone want to kill him?!

Featuring lively characters, quirky humor, and an action-packed plot that covers the gamut of every monster you've never heard of, Return to Exile--a modern day fantasy adventure--is brimming with boy and girl appeal and is a gem for reluctant young readers and adults young and old.

Artwork by Caldecott-honoree John Rocco, illustrator of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, The Heroes of Olympus, The Kane Chronicles, and the Caldecott-nominated Blackout.

Return to Exile is the first book in The Hunter Chronicles series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Expertly Crafted with Wonderful Milieu August 31, 2011
Format:Hardcover
Return to Exile is perfectly balanced between a fantastical world of monsters, traps, weapons, and a precocious 12 year-old hero named Sky Weathers. Full of action, humor, and an imaginative cast of characters, this is the kind of series that will not only appeal to younger readers, but their older siblings and parents as well. With so many fantasy derivatives out there, I found Return to Exile to be a wholly unique work, inventing a mythology and milieu that is as intriguing as it is satisfying. If you enjoy the genre, consider this one a must-read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Epic Middle Reader Adventure August 31, 2011
Format:Hardcover
(Full disclosure: I am a friend of the author, and have read this book in draft and in ARC form)

** Kids fight evil monsters using weapons made of garbage, save the world. **

A lot of books don't get any better than their high concept. This one does. Patten is funny, in a way that appeals to both kids and adults. He writes great action. He plots against deep and interesting backstory. He concocts elaborate and funny riddles. He crafts vivid, believable characters, even when those characters are monsters. His monsters are all original, too, bizarre and creaky and fun and gross and fascinating and evil... or are they evil, after all?

Is your kid any of...

- smart
- funny
- curious
- precocious
- fantasy-loving
- action oriented
- a puzzle solver
- looking for the next Percy Jackson- or Harry Potter-style adventure?

Get your kid this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Suspenseful and exciting! December 7, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I read Return to Exile during my time in study hall. It's a great book and it was hard to contain myself as I read it, especially reading it someplace where I needed to be somewhat quiet. The unexpected turns made me gasp and nearly slam my face into my desk, sometimes even bouncing in my seat. Each page contained exciting moments
that would make the scene either change dramatically or add spice to the chapter. The book was wonderful, the details adding more to the characters and making them rich and interesting. The puzzles were absolutely wonderful since it always took more than one turn in a right or wrong direction and it left me guessing throughout the book until they finally admitted the correct answer. This book is definitely a favorite of mine because of the suspense and adventure that causes you to bounce in your seat and squeal in surprise or
frustration. I recommend this book!
